In Chrome, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac. Firefox and Edge use the same print-preview approach with slightly different labels.
This saves the single page or document you opened—not an entire website. The preview matters because print CSS, page size, margins, and hidden screen elements can make the PDF look different from the browser window.
Save an HTML page as a PDF in a browser
The built-in print workflow is the simplest method because it uses the browser’s own HTML, CSS, fonts, images, and JavaScript rendering. Let the page finish loading, then create the PDF from print preview rather than trying to download the page source.
Chrome on Windows, Linux, or Mac
- Open the webpage, image, or local
.htmlfile in Chrome. A local file can be opened with File > Open File or by dragging it into a tab. - Open File > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux and Command+P on Mac.
- In the destination picker, select Save as PDF or another PDF destination offered by your system.
- Set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale, page range, and background options you need.
- Inspect every page in the preview. Click the print/save control, choose a filename and folder, and confirm.
If Chrome shows a system print dialog instead of its preview, select the operating system’s PDF printer or PDF save option there. The exact destination names can differ by operating system and Chrome version.

Firefox
- Open the page or local HTML document.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Print.
- In the print-preview destination dropdown, choose Save to PDF.
- Review orientation, pages, color, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background settings.
- Use Simplified format when it is offered and you want an article without navigation or other surrounding page elements. Selecting Simplified format disables print backgrounds.
- Click Print, then select the filename and destination.
Mozilla notes that a web page can be set up to look different on paper than on screen. Treat the preview as the authoritative result, not the live tab.
Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage or local HTML file.
- Choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Select a PDF destination if one is listed, then review the preview.
- Adjust paper size, margins, scale, orientation, backgrounds, and page selection as needed.
- For a cleaner article, open the page in Immersive Reader first and print from there if the site supports it. Immersive Reader is not available on every website.
- Save the PDF when the preview matches what you need.

Make the PDF layout readable
Print output follows print styles and paper constraints. A wide dashboard, a page with fixed navigation, or a long article may need a few changes before saving.
Use the preview to catch problems
- Content is cut off at the right: switch to landscape, choose a wider paper size, or reduce scale.
- Too much empty space: reduce margins or increase scale slightly.
- Colors, logos, or shaded sections disappear: enable Background graphics (the wording varies by browser).
- Headers, URLs, or dates are unwanted: turn off browser headers and footers when the dialog provides that control.
- A table or card splits awkwardly: try a different scale or orientation; the page’s print CSS may also control where breaks occur.
- Only selected pages are needed: enter a page range in the print dialog rather than deleting pages afterward.
Wait for dynamic content
Single-page applications, charts, web fonts, and lazy-loaded images may continue changing after the tab first appears. Wait until the visible content is complete, dismiss transient overlays, and scroll through important sections once before opening Print. If an image or chart is still absent in preview, return to the page, wait longer, and print again.
Local HTML files and their assets
When you open file:///… HTML, the browser can only display images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts that the document can resolve from its local paths. Keep relative assets in the expected folder structure. If the page relies on a server-side route, an API, or a build step, open the built output or run the project’s local web server first; printing the source file alone will not execute a missing backend.

For a reproducible handoff, place the HTML and its asset folder together, open the same entry file, and verify that the preview contains the fonts and images before saving. A PDF is a static rendering, so interactive menus, video playback, and form behavior will not remain interactive in the same way.
When a cleaner page is needed
News sites and documentation pages often include navigation, cookie notices, newsletter forms, recommendation cards, and chat controls. Firefox’s Simplified format and Edge’s Immersive Reader can remove some of that material, but each is conditional: the page must expose the feature, and the resulting layout can differ from the original. If neither is available, use the page’s own reader view or hide overlays before printing, then confirm the preview.
Automate HTML-to-PDF conversion with Chrome
For repeated captures, a graphical dialog is slow. Chrome for Developers documents a headless command that writes a PDF in the current working directory:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com/Pages that keep loading or change after the initial response may need timing controls. --timeout=5000 sets a maximum five-second wait for capture, while --virtual-time-budget gives time-dependent page code a virtual-time window. Option names and behavior can vary by Chrome version, so check the current Chrome headless documentation when building a script.
Headless capture is best for a known, repeatable URL. For a local file, pass its file URL or the path format accepted by your Chrome installation. If the page requires login, private network access, a consent choice, or a user gesture, the simple command may not reproduce the interactive session you used in the normal browser.
Troubleshoot a blank, incomplete, or badly paginated PDF
The PDF is blank
First confirm that the source tab itself shows content. Reload, wait for scripts and fonts, and inspect print preview again. A blank result can occur when the page has not finished loading, when a protected route redirects to a login page, or when a local document references unavailable assets.
Images or fonts are missing
Wait for all images to finish loading and verify that the local HTML’s relative paths are correct. For a remote page, reload without a stale offline tab and check that the browser is not blocking the resource. Enable background graphics if the “missing” item is actually a CSS background.

The page is too wide
Choose landscape, a larger paper size, or a smaller scale. If the page is a dashboard with fixed-width panels, printing a selected section or exporting from the application itself may produce a better result than printing the whole viewport.
Popups, cookie notices, or chat widgets cover the text
Dismiss them before printing. If the site supports Firefox Simplified format or Edge Immersive Reader, use that view and inspect the new preview. Do not assume the cleanup feature exists on every site.
Page breaks split headings or tables
Try modestly reducing scale, changing margins, or switching orientation. If you control the HTML, add print-specific CSS such as @media print rules and break controls, then reload before printing. If you do not control the page, the browser settings are the practical controls available.
The automated PDF captures an old or half-loaded state
Increase the headless wait, use the documented virtual-time budget for animations, and make sure the URL is reachable without a prompt. For highly dynamic pages, a normal browser preview is a useful diagnostic even when the final workflow is scripted.

Does a PDF preserve the page’s interactive behavior?
No. Printing creates a static representation. Menus, video playback, live dashboards, and form behavior should be tested separately if interactivity matters.
Can I print only part of a webpage?
Edge’s print workflow documents printing a selected portion when the system dialog exposes that option. Otherwise, use the page’s own print view or copy the needed content into a separate HTML document before saving.
Why can two computers produce different PDFs from the same HTML?
Browser version, operating system print drivers, installed fonts, paper defaults, and available print settings can differ. Compare the preview settings and keep the HTML’s assets available on both systems.
