The right method depends on what “download” means. To make a navigable offline copy of a conventional, link-connected site, use HTTrack. To save a file that appears only after JavaScript runs or a user clicks a control, use browser automation such as Playwright. HTTrack fetches and rewrites discoverable HTML and CSS, but it does not execute JavaScript; Playwright drives a real browser and can capture the resulting download.
Choose the outcome before choosing a tool
A website can mean a collection of pages and assets, one attachment, or a client-rendered application state. These are different jobs:

Do not promise yourself a “complete clone.” A local mirror is a set of downloaded responses; it is not the original server, database, authentication system or API.

Method 1: mirror a link-discoverable site with HTTrack
HTTrack’s official site reports release 3.50-4, dated September 25, 2026, with Windows and macOS/Linux/Unix/BSD availability and a command-line interface. Those are vendor statements, so verify compatibility on the operating system you plan to use.

Install and run a basic mirror
Install HTTrack using the package or installer for your operating system, then run:
httrack https://example.com/ --path mydirUse the final canonical address when possible. By default, HTTrack stays on the starting host, follows links it can discover, rewrites retained links for local browsing, and keeps logs and cache in the selected output directory. Open the generated local index after the crawl finishes.
Check what was actually downloaded
- Open
hts-log.txtandhts-err.txtin the output directory. - Look for refused, redirected or filtered URLs, not just a successful process exit.
- Open representative pages locally, including a deep page rather than only the home page.
- Inspect images, stylesheets, fonts and scripts in the browser’s developer tools to find missing resources.
A mirror can look complete while still omitting assets. The logs are the authoritative place to investigate those omissions.
Redirects and host scope
The default same-host scope matters when an apex domain redirects to www, or HTTP redirects to HTTPS. The crawl can stop or exclude the destination because it is a different host. Start at the final address, or adjust the scope deliberately after checking the redirect chain. Widening scope indiscriminately can pull unrelated content.

Sitemaps and off-host requisites
HTTrack documents a --sitemap option that checks sitemap declarations in robots.txt and falls back to /sitemap.xml. This can reveal URLs that are not linked from the pages you start with. The --near option can fetch page requisites hosted elsewhere, but it may download a large amount from an external host; a narrower host filter is safer when you know which asset domain is required.
The JavaScript limitation
HTTrack parses HTML and CSS; it does not run JavaScript. A lazy-loaded image, route, or API URL assembled only at runtime is invisible to the crawler and will be missing from the mirror. Client-side navigation, infinite scroll and data fetched after load therefore need a browser-based workflow or a separate export from the application.
Method 2: save a JavaScript-triggered file with Playwright
Use Playwright when the page creates an attachment after JavaScript executes or after a user action. Register the download listener before clicking, wait for the event, and save the temporary file before the browser context closes.

})();Why the order matters
If you click first and only then wait for a download, the event may already have fired and your script can hang. The browser context owns temporary download files; close it only after saveAs succeeds. The saved path should be writable and should include a filename that is safe for your operating system.

When a click is not a download
Some controls fetch JSON, open a new tab, or render content rather than emit an attachment. In those cases, inspect the network request and application behavior, then save the response or rendered output using a workflow designed for that result. The download-event pattern is specifically for a page attachment.
Handling redirects, authentication and dynamic pages
Redirects
For HTTrack, begin with the post-redirect canonical host or configure scope to include the destination. For Playwright, wait for the page state you actually need after navigation and complete any permitted sign-in steps before triggering the download. Do not embed credentials in source code or commit cookies to a repository.
Authentication and access controls
Neither tool bypasses authorization. Use an account and permissions that allow the copy, follow the site’s terms, and avoid collecting other users’ private data. A downloaded response may still depend on server-side authorization when opened later.

Static crawlers cannot discover resources that appear only after scrolling or script execution. A browser automation script can scroll, wait for a selector or network activity, and then capture a particular state, but the exact sequence is application-specific. There is no evidence-based single command that exports every client-rendered route.

Performance, reliability and responsible use
- Start small: test one section and a few asset types before launching a large crawl.
- Use logs: refused, redirected and filtered URLs explain apparent gaps.
- Resume carefully: HTTrack can resume interrupted mirrors and update an existing mirror; retain the output directory and cache.
- Control scope: broad off-host fetching can create unexpected volume.
- Respect robots.txt and terms: HTTrack identifies as HTTrack and obeys robots.txt by default. You remain responsible for having permission to copy content.
- Do not infer completeness from speed: no reliable performance or completeness percentage is established here; results depend on site size, network conditions and application behavior.
Troubleshooting common failures
The local page is blank or unstyled
Check hts-err.txt for rejected CSS, scripts or fonts, then verify that the local HTML points to files inside the mirror. If the page is rendered entirely by JavaScript, HTTrack cannot reproduce it; use Playwright or an application export.
Images or routes are missing
Determine whether the URL exists in the original HTML/CSS. Runtime-generated and lazy-loaded URLs will not be found by HTTrack. Review host scope, redirects and filters; consider --sitemap for unlinked pages and a narrowly scoped --near for required external assets.
The crawl stops at another hostname
Follow the redirect manually, restart at the final canonical URL, or add only the necessary destination host to scope. Avoid an unrestricted multi-domain crawl.

Confirm that the clicked control really emits a download, register waitForEvent('download') before the click, and verify the selector matches the current page. Add an explicit timeout and capture console/network diagnostics when the application reports an error.

The downloaded file disappears
Call download.saveAs(...) before closing the browser context. Playwright’s temporary download is removed with that context.

FAQ
Can HTTrack download a React or Vue application?
It can fetch any static resources discoverable in the responses it reads, but it does not execute the application’s JavaScript. Runtime routes and API data may therefore be absent.
Does Playwright make an offline website?
No. The documented download flow saves one attachment emitted by a page. Building an offline application requires a separate, application-specific capture and data strategy.
