First check whether the post offers X’s own Download video or Save video control. If it doesn’t, copy the link to the individual post and use yt-dlp—a free, open-source downloader—or a reputable graphical alternative. Save only videos you own, have permission to download, or are otherwise legally entitled to preserve; downloading a file does not give you permission to repost it.
Before downloading: get the right post link
Open the individual post containing the video, rather than a profile or search-results page. In the X app, use Share → Copy link; on the web, copy the address-bar URL. It will usually resemble https://x.com/username/status/123456789... or the older https://twitter.com/username/status/123456789... format.
Keep the username and post ID intact. If a downloader rejects the address, remove extra tracking parameters after the post ID or try the other domain form. A URL to an embedded player, an image, or a repost may not identify the video you intend to save. The post must also still be accessible: deleted, protected, login-only, age-restricted, or region-restricted posts may not download.

Method 1: Check for X’s own download option
- Open the post or the video’s menu.
- Check More, Share, or the video menu for an option such as Download video or Save video.
- If it appears, select it and look in the device’s Downloads, Files, or Photos app.
X does not show one universal download control for every post. Its availability and wording can vary with the post, account settings, product tier, app version, and device. If you do not see it, use another method below rather than assuming the video is impossible to save.

Bookmarking is not downloading. A bookmark saves a link to your X account; it does not create a video file on your device, and it depends on the post remaining available. Screen recording is another fallback, but it captures playback in real time and may include interface elements or notifications.
Method 2: Download with yt-dlp on a computer
For repeat downloads, or when you want more control over format and file location, yt-dlp is a practical local option. Get it from the official installation guide or the project’s release page. The commands below assume yt-dlp is installed and available in your terminal or PowerShell. Installation choices differ by operating system and can change; follow the project’s current instructions if a command is unavailable.
Install yt-dlp
On Windows, one package-manager option is:
winget install yt-dlpOn macOS with Homebrew:
brew install yt-dlpOn Linux, a Python installation is:
python3 -m pip install -U "yt-dlp[default]"On macOS or Linux, install FFmpeg through Homebrew or your distribution’s package manager as appropriate. On Windows, use the installation guidance linked above. FFmpeg is important when the best available video and audio arrive as separate streams that must be merged; yt-dlp also uses it for some conversions and post-processing.

Open a terminal in the folder where you want the video saved, then run:
yt-dlp "POST_URL"Replace POST_URL with the copied post link, including the quotation marks. yt-dlp will select an available format and save the file in the current directory. The filename may be based on the account, post ID, and text associated with the post.
To choose a Downloads folder explicitly, use one of these examples:
yt-dlp -P "~/Downloads" "POST_URL"yt-dlp -P "$HOMEDownloads" "POST_URL"The first is for macOS/Linux-style shells; the second is for Windows PowerShell. yt-dlp documents -P for download paths and -o for output templates in its FAQ.

Choose a format or filename
To favor MP4-compatible formats where available, try:
yt-dlp -f "bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/best[ext=mp4]/best" "POST_URL"Separate audio and video streams require FFmpeg to merge. This command cannot guarantee a specific resolution or create quality that X did not make available for the post. A third-party site’s “4K” label is not proof that the source video is 4K.
For a simple filename based on the uploader and post ID:
yt-dlp -o "%(uploader)s-%(id)s.%(ext)s" "POST_URL"An ID-based name is often more reliable than using the post text, which may contain characters that do not work well in filenames. To choose both a folder and a date-bearing name:
yt-dlp -P "~/Videos/X" -o "%(uploader)s-%(upload_date)s-%(id)s.%(ext)s" "POST_URL"Keep yt-dlp current
Social platforms change how they deliver media, so an extractor that worked before may stop working. For the standalone yt-dlp binary, run:
yt-dlp -UFor a pip installation, update with:
python3 -m pip install -U "yt-dlp[default]"If you installed it using a package manager, update it using that manager—for example, winget upgrade yt-dlp on Windows or brew upgrade yt-dlp on macOS. See the official releases for current project updates.
Audio-only downloads
If you own the video or have permission to use its audio, yt-dlp can extract audio:

yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 "POST_URL"This requires FFmpeg. Converting to MP3 can reduce quality, and extracting audio does not change the copyright or permission requirements that apply to the video.

Method 3: Use a graphical app or browser-based downloader
A graphical front end can make yt-dlp easier to use on Windows or macOS, while a browser-based downloader avoids installing software for a one-off public video. These are convenience options, not automatically safer ones. A third-party app may lag behind yt-dlp updates, and a web service receives the post URL and may log it or expose it to redirects or advertising.
Get a graphical app from its developer’s official site or repository, and check that it is maintained and clear about its update process. For a web downloader, avoid services that demand your X password, ask you to install an executable for a single download, request payment-card details before providing a basic file, or present a chain of misleading “Download” buttons. Never upload browser cookies or a private post URL to a third-party downloader. A local tool avoids sending the URL to an unknown downloader server, though local software still needs to come from a source you trust.
Download on a phone
iPhone and iPad
Try X’s download control first if the post offers one. Otherwise, copy the post link and, if you are authorized to save the video, use a reputable service in Safari. If the browser returns a file, save it to Files; moving it to Photos may depend on the site and iOS version. Do not install unknown configuration profiles or extensions, or give an unfamiliar app your X login.
Android
Check X’s own menu first. For a public post you are allowed to save, a trusted browser or vetted app may be more straightforward than a terminal. Look in the Downloads folder or the app’s media folder afterward. Avoid random APKs, and do not use an app that asks for your X password just to process a public post URL.
Advanced Android users can run yt-dlp in Termux. The project’s installation guide documents this route; it requires storage permission and additional setup, so it is not the simplest choice for occasional downloads:

Troubleshooting common download problems
“No video formats found” or the downloader returns an error
- Make sure you copied the link to the individual post, not a profile or an embedded player.
- Open the link in a normal browser and check that the video still plays for you.
- Update yt-dlp and retry.
- Try the
x.comandtwitter.comversions of the post URL and remove unnecessary parameters. - Check whether the post contains an external video embed rather than video hosted by X.
- If access genuinely requires login and you are authorized to view the post, use the local cookie method below. Otherwise, treat the post as unavailable rather than trying to bypass its restrictions.
Extractor support can change when a service changes its URL or media delivery. If the video no longer plays for you, it may be deleted, private, region-restricted, or otherwise inaccessible; a downloader cannot reliably recover unavailable media.
The post requires login
A login prompt may indicate a protected or age-restricted post, a changed X delivery flow, an outdated extractor, or a malformed URL. Update yt-dlp and check the post in your browser first. For content you are authorized to access on a trusted computer, yt-dlp documents browser-cookie use; for Chrome, the command is:
yt-dlp --cookies-from-browser chrome "POST_URL"Cookies act like authentication credentials. Use them only on a device you trust. Never paste cookies into a website, upload a cookie file to an online downloader, or share them. Cookies do not grant permission to access another person’s private content.
The output has no audio, or audio and video are separate
Install FFmpeg and retry. yt-dlp may download the best audio and video as separate streams and merge them locally; without FFmpeg, merging or some post-processing may fail.
The downloaded file will not play
Try a current player such as VLC, or retry with FFmpeg installed and an MP4-focused format command. Avoid copying a raw media URL from browser developer tools: some extracted links are temporary or depend on cookies, headers, or the original IP address.
The post is a repost, GIF, or deleted video
For a repost, try its post URL first. If that fails, check whether it points to an original uploader or an external source rather than assuming the repost hosts a separate copy. Many items labeled GIF on X are looping videos and may download as MP4. You can convert an MP4 to GIF with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.gifGIFs can be much larger than the video and have reduced color quality. If a post was deleted, a downloader normally cannot retrieve its media from X; a copy you already saved or an authorized archive may be the only option, and recovery is not guaranteed.

Is it legal to download an X video?
Technical access and permission to use a video are separate questions. Public availability does not make a video public domain, and giving credit is not the same as getting permission. Before saving or using a clip, consider copyright as well as privacy, publicity, contract, and platform rules that may apply in your location and circumstances.
X’s fair-use guidance describes a fact-specific analysis and says courts make the final determination. Fair use is not a blanket exemption for downloading, reposting, altering, or monetizing someone else’s video. Get permission from the rights holder unless a license or applicable legal exception allows your use. Do not bypass DRM, paywalls, account restrictions, or private-post protections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a Twitter/X video without an X account?
Sometimes. A public post may be accessible to X’s native download option or a downloader without login, but access depends on the post and X’s current delivery rules. Protected or login-only posts are not made public by using a downloader.

Can I download a private or protected X video?
A public downloader generally cannot access protected posts. Do not bypass privacy controls. If it is your own content or you are otherwise authorized to access it, use a trusted local workflow and protect any browser cookies used for authentication.
Can I download a video from a repost?
Try the repost’s individual post URL. If that fails, check whether the visible post links to the original uploader or an external video source; the repost may not contain a separately downloadable X-hosted file.
Can I save an X video as MP4?
Often, if X makes an MP4-compatible format available. Try yt-dlp’s MP4-focused command in the article, but the post’s available formats determine the result; no tool can guarantee a particular resolution.
Where does yt-dlp save the video?
By default, it saves to the terminal’s current directory. Run the command from the folder you want, or use the -P option to choose a destination.
