The safest way to save a TikTok video to a PC is to use TikTok’s app, tap Share → Save video, then transfer the file to your computer. TikTok’s documented download steps are for its mobile app; the desktop site does not offer a universal save option. For a public video you are authorized to download, a command-line tool such as yt-dlp is an optional PC-only alternative, but it is not an official TikTok feature and may stop working when TikTok changes.
Use TikTok’s official download option, then transfer the file
On a phone or tablet, open the video in TikTok, tap Share, then tap Save video. TikTok’s instructions are documented in its video downloads help page.
Transfer the saved file to your PC using a USB cable, cloud storage, AirDrop or another local transfer method, or email or messaging. The exact steps depend on your phone and computer. The resulting file is a TikTok download copy; it is not necessarily the creator’s original file or identical in resolution, bitrate, metadata, or audio quality.
If Save video is missing, TikTok says the creator has not allowed downloads for that post. Try another ordinary public video to see whether the option is missing only for that post. If it is, don’t try to bypass the restriction. A video being viewable in a browser does not itself grant permission to download or reuse it.

TikTok’s website may display sharing or other controls, but its official help does not document a universal desktop workflow for saving a video file. Desktop behavior can vary by browser, account, region, post type, and interface version. Saving a post to a TikTok collection or bookmark is also not the same as downloading a file to your computer.
Download a public video using only a PC
If you need a PC-only method and have permission to download the video, yt-dlp is an open-source command-line program with a TikTok extractor. It is third-party software, not a TikTok feature. Use it only for videos you own, have permission to save, or are otherwise entitled to use. TikTok changes can break the extractor, and private, deleted, login-gated, age-restricted, or region-restricted videos may not work.

Windows
- Download the current Windows executable from the official yt-dlp releases page.
- Put
yt-dlp.exein a folder you can find, then open PowerShell or Command Prompt in that folder. - Run the command below, replacing the example URL with the TikTok video’s full URL:
.yt-dlp.exe "https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/1234567890123456789"
The downloaded media is normally written to the current folder. By default, the filename is based on information such as the video title and ID; the extension and exact filename can vary.

Use the actual video URL
The preferred URL format looks like https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/1234567890123456789. A profile, hashtag, sound, or search-results URL is not the same as a video post URL. If you have a shortened TikTok link, open it in a browser and copy the final address from the video page; short links have been reported to fail with download tools, though behavior can change.

Fix common download problems

Check that you supplied a full video URL, not a profile or short link, and confirm the post still plays in a normal browser. A deleted or restricted post may not be available. TikTok extractor changes can also cause failures. |

These are known kinds of failure reported by users and maintainers, not guarantees that a particular problem will occur now. Examples include reports about short links, watermarked output, video-not-found errors, HTTP 403 errors, and sponsored videos.

Back up your own TikTok videos
If you are a creator, keep the original video file before publishing. TikTok recommends retaining an offline copy of your videos or photos before posting. A downloaded copy from the platform may not preserve the original quality, metadata, edits, or separate audio assets.
You can check your download setting in the TikTok app at Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Downloads → Video downloads. TikTok says private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 16 have downloads turned off by default and may not be able to enable them under the conditions it describes. Turning downloads off prevents use of TikTok’s download feature for existing and future posts, but copies people downloaded while it was enabled remain on their devices. Can you download a TikTok without a watermark?
TikTok’s official save option does not promise a watermark-free file. Third-party extraction results can vary too, so avoid tools that promise to remove attribution from any video. If it is your own post, start from your original file. If it belongs to someone else, ask the creator for a copy and permission before editing or redistributing it.
Downloading is not the same as permission to reuse
Saving a video for personal offline viewing is different from reposting it, modifying it, using it in an advertisement, or including it in a monetized video. Downloading a public file does not automatically grant rights to the footage, music, or a person’s likeness. Rules depend on the work, the use, and the applicable jurisdiction; seek permission when needed and do not assume that a download option authorizes reuse.
