For a one-off download, open the direct image URL and save the image from your browser. For repeatable downloads, use curl -L "IMAGE_URL" -o image.png. The -L option follows redirects and -o gives the local file an explicit name. Then verify that the response is really PNG data rather than an HTML error page saved with a .png extension.
Choose the right method first
Your best method depends on whether this is a single manual save or an automated job.

This article assumes you are allowed to retrieve the image. Respect the site’s terms, copyright and access controls.

- Copy the image’s direct URL. A direct URL usually opens the image itself, rather than a page containing the image.
- Paste the URL into the address bar and open it.
- Use the browser’s image context menu or image controls to choose Save image as, Download image or the equivalent command.
- Select a folder and a descriptive filename ending in
.pngonly when the downloaded content is actually PNG.
Exact menu wording varies by browser, operating system, settings and the response headers sent by the server. Some servers trigger an automatic download; others display the image in a tab first.

When a page has a download link
A page author can add an anchor such as <a href="/images/logo.png" download="logo.png">Download</a> to suggest a filename. The download attribute is not a universal force-download switch: it is limited to same-origin URLs and blob: or data: URLs, and browser behavior still depends on headers and user settings. It cannot reliably force a download from an arbitrary third-party image host.
Download with curl
For a direct image URL, run:
curl -L "https://example.com/path/image.png" -o image.pngReplace the example URL with the real one. -L follows HTTP redirects; -o image.png writes to that exact local filename instead of relying on the URL’s final path segment.
Keep the server-provided filename when appropriate
If a trusted server supplies a filename through the Content-Disposition response header, curl can use it with:

For predictable scripts, an explicit -o path is usually safer; server-provided names can contain unexpected characters or collide with existing files.
Inspect the response before saving
Use a header request to see redirects and the advertised media type:
curl -I -L "IMAGE_URL"Look for a successful final status and Content-Type: image/png. A header is evidence, not proof: a misconfigured server can send the wrong type. To save while showing transfer details, use:

curl -L --fail --show-error --location "IMAGE_URL" -o image.png--fail makes HTTP errors return a failure status instead of quietly writing an error response. It does not detect every HTML page returned with a successful status, so inspect the file as well.
Download from Python
This example streams the response, checks the HTTP status and writes chunks so a large image is not held entirely in memory:

The media-type check catches many login pages and error documents, but a server can still mislabel content. For high-assurance processing, inspect the file signature with an image library before trusting it.
Download from Node.js
With a current Node.js release that provides fetch, check the status and write the response bytes:

If your Node.js version does not include the Fetch API, use a maintained HTTP client and apply the same checks: follow redirects, enforce a timeout, reject non-success statuses and validate the media type.
Confirm that the file is really PNG
Check the HTTP media type
PNG is normally identified by the image/png media type. The server’s Content-Type header tells clients how to interpret the response, while the filename extension is only a naming convention.

Check the file itself
Open the downloaded file in an image viewer or editor. If it opens as a web page, login form or access-denied message, you downloaded a document rather than an image. On systems with the file utility, run:
file image.pngA valid PNG begins with a distinctive eight-byte signature. Image libraries and operating-system viewers generally verify this signature and the internal structure more reliably than an extension check.
Do not “convert” by renaming
Changing error.html to error.png does not convert the bytes. If the source is JPEG, WebP or HTML, use an actual image conversion tool after downloading, or request a PNG representation from a service that supports conversion.
Why a direct download can fail
The URL is a webpage, not the image
Image galleries often show a page URL while the actual file is loaded from a separate image URL. Use the page’s download control or inspect the page to identify the permitted direct asset URL. Downloading the page itself produces HTML.
Redirects are not followed
Some hosts redirect from a short URL, HTTP to HTTPS, or a CDN address. Browser navigation follows redirects automatically; curl and scripts must enable redirect following, as shown above.
Authentication or expiring links
A private image may require cookies, an authorization header or a signed URL that expires. A request without those credentials can return a login page or a 401/403 response. Use the service’s documented export/download function and keep credentials out of shared shell history and source control.

Hotlink protection, bot checks or rate limits
Some hosts deny requests that lack an expected referrer, user agent or browser session, or they present a challenge instead of the image. Do not attempt to bypass access controls. Use an official API, obtain permission, slow the request rate and provide the required authentication.
Cross-origin browser scripting
An image can be visible in an <img> element while JavaScript is forbidden from reading its pixels. Canvas access requires the image server to permit the requesting origin with CORS headers. Setting an image element’s crossOrigin property only requests a CORS-enabled fetch; it cannot grant permission the server did not provide. For a simple local save, browser download or curl is usually more suitable than page JavaScript.
Troubleshooting checklist
- File is tiny or opens as text: run
curl -I -L, inspectContent-Type, and open the file as text to look for an error or login message. - HTTP 404: the path is wrong, the asset was removed or the link expired. Obtain a current URL.
- HTTP 401 or 403: authentication or permission is required. Use the site’s authorized session or API.
- curl exits with a certificate error: verify the host and local CA configuration. Avoid disabling certificate verification unless you control the connection and understand the security risk.
- Download stops partway: retry with a reasonable timeout and resume support where the server permits it; check disk space and network stability.
- Filename has no .png extension: inspect the media type and file signature, then rename only after confirming the bytes are PNG.
- Browser saves a different name: response headers or browser settings may control naming. Use curl’s explicit
-ooption when the name matters.

For occasional files
Use the browser. It requires no script maintenance and naturally supplies your existing session when a site permits downloads.
For automation
Use curl, Python or Node.js with explicit timeouts, redirect handling, status checks and a destination directory. Log the URL, status and media type, but avoid logging access tokens or private query strings.

For many URLs
Throttle requests, reuse connections where your client supports it, honor the host’s limits and write to temporary files before renaming successful downloads into place. This prevents a partially written file from being mistaken for a completed PNG.
For dynamic pages
