Save the image from your browser. YouTube’s maxres image is normally 1280×720 when available, but it is not generated for every video. If that URL fails, use hqdefault.jpg, sddefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, or default.jpg.
Get the video ID first
The thumbnail URL works only when the video ID is correct. The ID is usually an 11-character value, but rely on the URL structure rather than counting characters.
Regular watch URLs
For a URL such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, copy everything after v= up to the next &. Do not include other query parameters such as a playlist, timestamp, or tracking value.
Short links
For https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID, the ID is the final path segment. Remove any text after a question mark.

For https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, copy the final path segment and remove any query string.
Check the copied value
- It contains no spaces, quotation marks, or trailing punctuation.
- It does not include
v=, a leading slash, or&list=.... - Opening the normal YouTube URL with that ID still loads the intended video.
Build and download the highest practical resolution
- Copy the ID using the method above.
- Insert it into
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. - Open the completed address in a new browser tab.
- Right-click (or Control-click on macOS) the image and choose Save Image As, Save Picture As, or your browser’s equivalent.
- Choose a filename and location, then save the JPEG.
Example: if the ID is abc123XYZ89, open https://i.ytimg.com/vi/abc123XYZ89/maxresdefault.jpg. The address is a direct image URL, so it can also be pasted into an image editor, a CMS media importer, or an HTML <img> element.
Know what “HD” means for YouTube thumbnails
YouTube’s Data API defines thumbnail objects named default, medium, high, standard, and maxres. Each object can include its own URL, width, and height. For video resources, the documented typical dimensions are:

maxres is the highest documented thumbnail size, not a promise that every video has one. YouTube says availability depends on the resource and the original content resolution. A filename containing “maxres” also does not mean the artwork was created in 1280×720, and it certainly does not guarantee a 4K source.

Why the image may not look truly high quality
A creator may have uploaded a small, compressed, or blurry image. YouTube can resize an uploaded thumbnail to its required dimensions without changing the aspect ratio. It does not crop the image; if the proportions differ, black bars may be added. Enlarging a smaller source creates a larger file, not additional detail.
Fallbacks when maxresdefault.jpg is missing
If the maximum URL returns a gray placeholder, a failed response, or no usable image, test these filenames in order:

Keep the same video ID and change only the filename. The first working fallback may be smaller than 1280×720, but it is preferable to a placeholder. Always check the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions in your operating system or image editor rather than assuming the name indicates its size.
Use metadata for reliable automation
For a script that must select the best available image, request the video’s thumbnail metadata through the YouTube Data API and inspect the objects returned for that resource. Choose the highest-resolution object that actually has a URL and dimensions. This avoids treating a missing maxres variant as a successful download and also works with other video-related resources, such as playlist items and search results, when YouTube supplies those thumbnails.

Browser and command-line ways to save the file
Desktop browsers
Paste the direct URL, wait for the image to display, then use the context-menu save command. If the browser opens the file in a viewer instead of displaying it inline, use the viewer’s download button or press Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux or Command+S on macOS.

The URL shows a gray image or fails
- Confirm that the ID contains no query parameters or punctuation.
- Try
hqdefault.jpgfirst, followed bysddefault.jpg,mqdefault.jpg, anddefault.jpg. - If every variant fails, the video may not be available to the service or the ID may be wrong.
The downloaded file is smaller than expected
Inspect its actual dimensions. YouTube does not generate a maximum-size object for every resource, and the creator’s source may have been smaller. A fallback is not defective merely because it is below 1280×720.

The picture has black bars
This usually reflects the original thumbnail’s aspect ratio. YouTube resizes without cropping and can add bars to reach the required dimensions.
The image looks blurry after saving
Saving the JPEG does not improve the source. Do not upscale it and describe the result as 4K; use the highest object YouTube actually returns.
An automated downloader keeps selecting the wrong variant
Do not infer quality from the filename alone. Read the thumbnail metadata’s URL, width, and height, then select the largest returned object. Log the chosen variant so a later change in YouTube’s availability is visible.
Performance, reliability, and storage considerations
- For a single image, the direct CDN URL is simpler and faster than loading the full watch page.
- Cache the downloaded file locally when you need it repeatedly; avoid requesting the same image on every page view.
- Keep the original JPEG and record the source video ID and retrieval date in your asset notes.
- Validate the HTTP response and content type before handing a file to an image-processing pipeline.
- For large batches, use API metadata to avoid wasting requests on variants that do not exist, and implement timeouts and retry limits.
Rights and responsible reuse
Downloading a thumbnail for personal reference is different from republishing it. Before placing one on a website, in a publication, advertisement, or commercial project, check the creator’s permission and any applicable license or attribution requirement. A direct image URL does not grant ownership or reuse rights. If you need to host the image long term, obtaining the creator’s permission is the safest approach.
