There is no universal Android “double-tap flashlight” setting. Pixel phones may offer a back-tap action through Quick Tap, Samsung Galaxy phones commonly use a double press of the Side button, Motorola phones use a two-chop Fast flashlight gesture, and selected OnePlus phones use a screen-off “V” gesture. If your model lacks one of these, Quick Settings or the lock-screen flashlight button is the dependable fallback.
First, identify what “double tap” means
Phone makers use different shortcuts that are often confused:
- Double-tap the back: Pixel Quick Tap and Quick Launch on selected Motorola models.
- Double-press a hardware button: Samsung’s Side-button shortcut, and similar options on some other phones.
- Gesture on a screen that is off: OnePlus models that support drawing a “V” to toggle the flashlight.
Availability depends on the exact model, Android skin, software version, carrier and region. The instructions below cover the major brands.

Google Pixel: use Quick Tap if “Toggle flashlight” is listed
Google documents Quick Tap on Pixel 4a (5G) and later. The feature assigns an action to two taps on the back, but Google’s main help page does not promise that every Pixel includes a flashlight action. Check the action list on your phone before assuming it is supported.

- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Gestures.
- Tap Quick Tap or Quick Tap to start actions.
- Turn on Use Quick Tap.
- Select Toggle flashlight if it appears.
Double-tap the back to switch the light on or off. If “Toggle flashlight” is missing, that Pixel/software combination does not expose the action in the standard menu. Google’s support documentation confirms Quick Tap and its compatibility: Pixel Quick Tap instructions. A Google community answer shows that some newer configurations also expose flashlight and tap-strength controls, but treat those as device-dependent: Google Pixel community guidance.
Samsung Galaxy: double-press the Side button
On many modern Galaxy phones, the quickest flashlight shortcut is a double press of the Side button. Samsung says it can work with the screen off, although menus and availability vary by model, One UI version, carrier and region.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Side button.
- Tap Double press.
- Select Flashlight.
Press the Side button twice quickly to toggle the light. This replaces another double-press action, commonly Camera, so choose the shortcut you use more often. Samsung’s current options are listed in its Side button support guide, with flashlight and screen-off details in its flashlight guide.

Adjust Galaxy flashlight brightness
On compatible models, swipe down for Quick Settings and press and hold Flashlight. Turn it on if prompted, then move the brightness slider. The control is not available on every Galaxy device.
Motorola: use the two-chop Fast flashlight gesture
Motorola’s standard flashlight shortcut is not a double tap. It is two quick chopping motions with the phone.
- Open Settings and go to System → Gestures (the labels vary).
- Tap Fast flashlight and turn it on.
- On some software versions, open the Moto app, choose Gestures or Actions, then enable Fast flashlight.
Make two deliberate chops to toggle the LED. Do not twist the phone: Motorola uses a twisting motion for Camera. See Motorola’s gesture documentation and Fast flashlight help.

What about Motorola back tap?
Selected newer models offer Quick Launch, activated by double-tapping the back. Motorola documents actions such as opening an app, taking a screenshot, switching apps, going home or controlling music; flashlight is not guaranteed. Open Settings → Gestures → Quick Launch and inspect the actions on your exact phone before relying on it. See Motorola’s current gesture list.
OnePlus: try the screen-off “V” gesture
Selected OnePlus phones and OxygenOS releases let you draw a “V” on the display while it is off to toggle the flashlight.
- Open Settings.
- Look under System settings or Additional settings.
- Open Gestures or Screen-off gestures.
- Enable screen-off gestures and the Draw a V to turn the flashlight on or off option.
- With the display fully off, draw a V.
Menu names and supported gestures differ substantially between OxygenOS versions and models. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for “screen-off gestures,” “gestures” or “flashlight.” OnePlus manuals documenting the feature include the OxygenOS guide and selected OnePlus 10T documentation.

If your phone has no double-tap flashlight
Quick Settings: the universal fallback
- Wake the phone if necessary.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Flashlight or Torch.
- Tap it again to turn it off.
If the tile is not visible, swipe across more pages, tap the pencil or edit button, and add or move Flashlight into the visible area. You can also search Settings for “flashlight” or “torch.” This works on virtually all current Android phones, though heavily customized devices may use different labels.
Lock-screen shortcut
Many phones put a flashlight button on the lock screen. It is useful when the Side button is assigned to Camera, back-tap detection is unreliable, or you need light without unlocking. Motorola documents lock-screen flashlight controls in its gesture support.

Voice control
On supported Galaxy devices, ask the configured assistant, “Turn on the flashlight.” This depends on the assistant being enabled and able to hear you. It may fail in noise, with a blocked microphone, when voice access is restricted on the lock screen, or without a required network connection.

Troubleshooting shortcuts
The option is missing
The feature may not be supported, may be called Torch, or may have moved after an update. Search Settings for flashlight, torch, gesture, Quick Tap, Side button and screen-off gestures. Check Quick Settings and the lock-screen editor, then consult the manual for the exact model. Avoid installing a third-party app until built-in controls are exhausted.
Double-tap or gesture does nothing
- Back tap: Confirm it is enabled, tap the center or lower back (not the camera bump), use a consistent rhythm, test without a thick case, and check whether the screen must be awake. Increase tap strength if your phone offers that control.
- Side button: Press twice quickly, verify the assignment is still Flashlight, and check for a sticking or obstructed button.
- OnePlus V: Enable screen-off gestures and draw only after the display is fully off.
The camera opens instead
This is especially common on Motorola. Use two chopping motions for Fast flashlight; twisting the phone twice is the Camera gesture.
The light activates in your pocket
Disable the motion or back-tap gesture and use the lock-screen button or Quick Settings instead. Knocks and movement can be interpreted as intentional input.

Most phones allow only one action per gesture. Decide whether flashlight or Camera, Screenshot, media controls or another assigned action is more valuable to you.
Which method should you choose?
- Fastest hardware shortcut: Samsung Side-button double press, when available.
- Best physical motion: Motorola Fast flashlight, if your model supports it.
- Best back tap: Pixel Quick Tap when “Toggle flashlight” actually appears and detects reliably.
- Best screen-off display gesture: OnePlus V on compatible software.
- Most dependable overall: Quick Settings or a lock-screen flashlight button.
All shortcuts consume the same LED power; they only change how the light is activated. Brightness, battery drain and heat depend on the phone, LED level, battery condition and duration of use.
The Bottom Line
Android has no single double-tap flashlight feature. Check your phone maker’s built-in shortcut first, but keep Quick Settings or the lock-screen flashlight control as the reliable fallback.
