Use Selenium’s Actions API to send a real pointer double-click to the calendar element, then wait for and assert the state your calendar is supposed to produce. In Java, the core call is new Actions(driver).doubleClick(calendarItem).perform(); in Python, use ActionChains(driver).double_click(calendar_item).perform(). The selector, waits and assertion must match the calendar application you are testing.
The direct implementation
Selenium models a double-click as two left-button press-and-release cycles. Its convenience method first moves the pointer to the target element’s center and performs both clicks. The calendar application—not WebDriver—decides whether that opens an event, enters edit mode, selects a day, or triggers another behavior. Selenium’s documented mouse action is described in the Mouse actions guide.
Java
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.interactions.Actions;
WebElement calendarItem = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(".calendar-item"));
new Actions(driver)
.doubleClick(calendarItem)
.perform();
.calendar-item is only an example. Replace it with a locator that is stable in your application. The Actions class is part of Selenium’s pointer and keyboard action API; the broader design is documented in the Actions API reference.

Python
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.common.action_chains import ActionChains
calendar_item = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".calendar-item")
ActionChains(driver).double_click(calendar_item).perform()
Python exposes the same gesture as double_click(on_element=None). The optional element is the target of the pointer action; its signature is listed in the Selenium Python ActionChains documentation.

Prepare the test before sending the gesture
A double-click is reliable only when the calendar view and target are ready. Set up the driver, navigate to the relevant view, and use an explicit wait for a condition that represents readiness in your application. Do not locate an item while the calendar is still replacing its month or loading events.
Use a durable locator
Prefer an accessible role and name, or a dedicated test attribute, when the application provides one. A class such as .calendar-item may be shared by every event, may change with a redesign, or may match hidden templates. A target-specific attribute is usually clearer:
// Java
By event = By.cssSelector("[data-testid='event-123']");
# Python
(event_locator := (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "[data-testid='event-123']"))
When several matching events are expected, narrow the locator by date, time, title or container instead of taking the first match arbitrarily. If the calendar virtualizes rows or rerenders after scrolling, locate the item after the correct range is visible.

WebDriver checks that an element can be interacted with, but your test still needs an application-specific wait. Selenium’s guidance on visibility and interactability is in Interacting with web elements. In Java, an explicit wait can wait for the element to be visible:

import java.time.Duration;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.ExpectedConditions;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;
By event = By.cssSelector("[data-testid='event-123']");
WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10));
WebElement calendarItem = wait.until(
ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(event));
new Actions(driver).doubleClick(calendarItem).perform();
In Python, the equivalent is:
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
event_locator = (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "[data-testid='event-123']")
calendar_item = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located(event_locator))
ActionChains(driver).double_click(calendar_item).perform()
Visibility alone does not prove that a fixed header, modal, tooltip or consent layer is not covering the item’s center. Check the rendered page at the moment of the action and remove or close anything that intercepts the pointer.
Assert what the calendar should do
The WebDriver command succeeding only proves that the input action was sent. It does not prove that the calendar opened the event or entered edit mode. Wait for a state that is unique to the expected outcome and assert it.
Opening a details panel
// Java
new Actions(driver).doubleClick(calendarItem).perform();
WebElement panel = wait.until(
ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(
By.cssSelector("[role='dialog'][data-view='event-details']")));
if (!panel.isDisplayed()) {
throw new AssertionError("Event details panel did not open");
}
# Python
ActionChains(driver).double_click(calendar_item).perform()
panel = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located(
(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "[role='dialog'][data-view='event-details']")))
assert panel.is_displayed(), "Event details panel did not open"
Entering edit mode
Use the application’s observable edit-state marker, such as an edit form, an aria-expanded value or a URL/state change. Avoid asserting a hard-coded result merely because the element is called a calendar item; different calendars assign different meanings to a double-click.
Why a double-click can fail
Most failures are caused by targeting the wrong node, acting before rendering finishes, or having another element over the target. Selenium can report an element-click-intercepted error when the center point is obscured. The following checks isolate the common cases.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
ElementClickInterceptedException or an equivalent intercepted-click error |
A banner, dialog, tooltip, sticky header or other layer covers the element center. | Close the layer, wait for it to disappear, scroll the item into a usable position, and verify the center is unobscured before calling doubleClick. |
NoSuchElementException |
The selector is wrong, the calendar is on another view, or the event has not been rendered yet. | Confirm the locator in browser developer tools, navigate to the correct date/view, and locate the item only after an explicit readiness wait. |
StaleElementReferenceException |
The calendar rerendered after the element was found. | Wait for the rerender to finish and find the element again immediately before the action; do not reuse a reference from the previous view. |
| The call completes but nothing visible changes | The application uses a different double-click target, requires a particular child node, or assigns no double-click behavior. | Inspect the event handler’s target, try the element that actually receives the pointer event, and assert the documented application outcome rather than assuming one. |
| Only the first click seems to work | A rerender, selection handler or overlay appears between clicks. | Wait until the calendar is stable, ensure the target remains present, and assert that the expected post-click state is not replacing the target during the gesture. |
| Intermittent failures with a scrolling calendar | Virtualized content is recycled while scrolling, or the item is outside the usable viewport. | Scroll to the date, wait for the exact item, then reacquire it and double-click without another scroll or view change. |
Make the interaction deterministic
- Locate late: find the element after the calendar has finished changing month, day or view.
- Use one action chain: call
doubleClick(element).perform()(Java) ordouble_click(element).perform()(Python) rather than attempting two independent element clicks and hoping the application treats them as a double-click. - Keep the target stable: do not trigger a sort, refresh, animation or navigation between locating the item and performing the action.
- Wait for the result, not a fixed sleep: a state-based wait adapts to slower and faster test environments and provides a clearer failure.
- Capture diagnostics on failure: record the current URL, calendar view, target locator and a screenshot or page source so an overlay or rerender can be identified.
The convenience operation moves to the element center. If the calendar intentionally handles double-clicks on a child icon or a non-centered hit area, locate that event target instead of trying to compensate with arbitrary pointer movements.
Frames, shadow roots and custom calendar widgets
Calendar inside an iframe
If the calendar is rendered in an iframe, switch into that frame before locating the item and switch back afterward. A locator evaluated in the top-level document cannot see elements inside a child browsing context.
// Java
WebElement frame = wait.until(ExpectedConditions.frameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToIt(
By.cssSelector("iframe.calendar-frame")));
WebElement item = wait.until(ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(
By.cssSelector("[data-testid='event-123']")));
new Actions(driver).doubleClick(item).perform();
driver.switchTo().defaultContent();
Use the corresponding frame-switching methods in Python before the find_element call. The exact frame locator belongs to the application under test.

Calendar rendered in a shadow root
For a web component, obtain the component’s shadow root using Selenium’s shadow-DOM support, then locate the event within that root. The important rule is the same: query in the DOM context that owns the item and reacquire it after a component rerender.

Performance and reliability considerations
A pointer gesture itself is small; the waiting and rendering around it dominate test time. Keep the wait bounded and specific, avoid repeated refreshes, and do not add a long unconditional sleep after every double-click. A short, explicit wait for the expected panel, form or state change both reduces idle time and makes a failure actionable.
Run the same test against the browser and viewport combinations your calendar supports. Responsive layouts can move the event or introduce an overlay at a breakpoint, while headless and headed runs can expose different timing. The test should assert the application state, not pixel coordinates or a particular visual layout.
Do not treat a successful perform() call as a business-level success. The meaningful pass condition is the application state that follows it: the correct event identifier in a details view, the expected edit form, or another state your product specification defines.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture the calendar page or document the state after an interaction rather than drive the interaction itself, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one HTTP request. It is not a replacement for Selenium’s double-click assertion, but it can remove the browser-capture setup from a reporting or visual-check workflow.

Reference checklist
- Choose a stable, target-specific locator.
- Wait for the calendar view and item to be visible and usable.
- Check that the item’s center is not covered by an overlay.
- Send the documented Actions double-click.
- Wait for and assert the calendar’s actual post-action state.
- Reacquire the element after any rerender, navigation or virtualized scroll.
For the generic WebDriver context, see Selenium’s WebDriver documentation. The gesture is standardized; the meaning of that gesture remains specific to the calendar you are testing.

Does Selenium double-click a physical mouse?
No. WebDriver sends a virtualized pointer action to the browser. Selenium’s convenience method models two left-button press-and-release cycles at the target element’s center; your test should verify the application state that follows.
Can I use the same locator for every event in a month view?
Only if the locator identifies the intended event uniquely at the moment of the action. If several items match, add a stable event identifier or date/time condition rather than relying on element order.
What should a failure report include?
Record the locator, current calendar view and URL, the exception, and a screenshot or page source captured at failure time. Those details distinguish a bad selector from an overlay or a calendar rerender.
