Choose a bulk IP lookup method based on the fields you need, the size and frequency of your list, and the provider’s rules—not on a headline batch-size number. A browser lookup or file upload can suit a one-off job; recurring or production work is usually easier to manage through an authenticated API or CLI. Before sending a full list, verify the endpoint’s batch cap, quota accounting, rate limits, access tier, output format, and commercial-use terms. Limits differ by provider and endpoint; there is no universal bulk-IP limit.
Decide what “IP lookup” means for your job
Bulk IP lookup usually means enriching addresses with fields such as geolocation, ASN, network organization, or security and reputation data. “Bulk IP WHOIS” is narrower: it asks for registration information. Those results are not interchangeable. An enrichment endpoint may return organization or ASN information without registry allocation details or abuse contacts. If you need registration records or an abuse contact, identify that requirement explicitly and consult the relevant Regional Internet Registry rather than assuming a geolocation lookup supplies it. ip-api.io’s bulk lookup explanation describes this distinction.
Write down the output fields you actually need, the number of addresses, whether the work is one-time or recurring, and whether it is commercial. Then compare each candidate endpoint against those requirements. A large maximum batch is not useful if the endpoint omits a required field, is unavailable on your tier, or prohibits your intended use.
Choose the workflow that fits your list
Web lookup for a small, occasional list
A browser form is convenient when you have a short list and want to inspect results interactively. MaxMind documents an online lookup form for 50 or fewer IP addresses. Availability depends on the account role and permissions for the relevant product or service. For larger work, its account-portal batch lookup is documented for jobs ranging from hundreds to millions of addresses, with CSV and JSON export. MaxMind says these lookup methods consume service credit at the per-query rate for the selected service. See MaxMind’s web-services lookup guidance for the portal workflow and access conditions.
#1 Best Overall
File upload when you already have a spreadsheet
If the addresses are in a file and the task is not yet an automated pipeline, an upload workflow avoids building an API client. IPinfo’s Enrich IP tool documentation describes uploads in CSV, TXT, and XLSX formats. Check the tool’s current field availability and account limits before preparing a large file; the file formats alone do not establish what your plan permits. The provider’s upload instructions are in IPinfo’s bulk-enrichment guide.
Batch API for repeatable processing
An API suits scheduled jobs, application workflows, or repeated enrichment, but “one HTTP request” does not necessarily mean “one lookup” for quota purposes. IPinfo documents batches of up to 1,000 API requests in a single HTTP request. Its /batch/lite endpoint is available on free and paid tiers; the default /batch endpoint uses the paid-tier /lookup feature, so free-tier tokens should use /batch/lite. Inputs can be supplied as JSON arrays, newline-separated lists, or space-separated lists. IPinfo counts each URL within the batch toward volume, not merely the enclosing HTTP call. Consult the IPinfo Batch Enrichment API documentation for endpoint-specific syntax and current access terms.
Other providers use different request shapes and limits. The keyed bulk POST described in the ip-api.dev API reference accepts 1–100 addresses. The free batch JSON endpoint documented by IP-API.com accepts up to 100 IPs per batch, but is limited to 15 requests per minute from one IP address and is not permitted for commercial use. Do not transfer one provider’s batch limit or request format to another provider.

CLI for a developer’s repeatable workflow
A command-line interface can be useful for running a bulk operation from a script or terminal and checking available quota. IPinfo’s CLI documentation includes bulk-operation commands and quota checks; use its current command syntax rather than assuming another provider’s CLI behaves the same way. Use this checklist for the exact endpoint and account tier you intend to use. The figures below are provider-published limits in the linked documentation; the retrieved pages do not establish a publication year for these limits, so verify live terms before relying on them.
- Maximum inputs: Is the ceiling per HTTP request, uploaded job, or another unit?
- Quota accounting: Does one batch consume one request or one request per address?
- Rate and reset: Is there a per-minute cap, daily allowance, or monthly plan limit, and when does it reset?
- Authentication and tier: Does the endpoint require a key, paid plan, account role, or product permission?
- Fields and export: Does the result include the fields you need, and can you export or process it in your required format?
- Allowed use: Do the terms allow commercial use and your specific application?

Plan batches and rate limits safely
For a list larger than the endpoint’s per-batch ceiling, split it into chunks no larger than that documented maximum. Send chunks at a pace allowed by the provider’s rate and quota rules, and retain the association between every input address and its returned result. Chunking is not a way around a daily or monthly quota: all inputs may still count individually. For example, IPinfo explicitly counts each URL inside a batch. ip-api.io describes chunking over 100 for its own endpoint; that limit applies to that endpoint and should not be generalized to others.

For IP-API.com’s free batch endpoint, monitor the response headers: X-Rl indicates remaining requests and X-Ttl the seconds until reset. When the remaining limit reaches zero, wait for the indicated reset rather than continuing to send requests. The documentation warns repeated excess can lead to a one-hour IP ban. Other providers may use different headers, reset periods, or error behavior; follow the exact endpoint documentation.
For IPinfo API planning, its support article dated May 14, 2026 says token-bearing API calls count toward the plan’s monthly request limit, over-limit responses use HTTP 429, and request limits reset on the first day of the calendar month. It also says paid plans support automatic limit increases for an additional charge. Check your current account dashboard and plan terms before estimating cost: IPinfo’s request-counting guidance.

- Normalize the input list. Keep one address per record in a format accepted by your chosen form, file upload, or API. Preserve a source identifier if you need to join returned data back to other records.
- Select fields and endpoint. Decide whether you need enrichment fields or registration-style WHOIS data, then confirm the exact endpoint returns them. Do not infer a full WHOIS result from ASN or organization fields.
- Check account access and terms. Confirm key or account requirements, relevant tier, service-credit or request accounting, and whether commercial use is allowed.
- Calculate batches and request pacing. Divide the address count by the endpoint’s documented batch capacity, then account separately for per-minute and daily or monthly limits.
- Run a small initial batch. Inspect the shape and completeness of results, errors, headers, and export before launching the larger job.
- Process the remaining chunks. Respect the provider’s rate-limit signals, record failed inputs separately, and avoid resubmitting successful work unnecessarily.
- Review the final output. Verify record counts, missing fields, and the correspondence between input addresses and results before using the enrichment downstream.
Account for shared quotas and cost
Do not rely on an unauthenticated public endpoint for predictable automation. IPinfo’s support material describes its no-account public API as limited to 1,000 requests per day shared among users of the same source IP. Because other users share that source-IP allowance, the remaining capacity can be unpredictable. An authenticated plan has account-specific terms to review instead. See IPinfo’s comparison of its authenticated free plan and public API.
Estimate usage in addresses, not just HTTP calls, unless the provider explicitly defines quota another way. MaxMind describes service-credit use at the selected service’s per-query rate; IPinfo counts every URL inside a batch; and IP-API.com’s free limit is expressed as requests per minute per IP address. These are different accounting models. A provider’s batch ceiling tells you how many items fit in a request, not necessarily how many items your plan includes.

- HTTP 429 or “too many requests”: You have exceeded an applicable limit. For ip-api.dev, HTTP 429 indicates its allowance was exceeded; its documented counters reset at 00:00 UTC. For IP-API.com, use
X-RlandX-Ttlto determine when to resume. For IPinfo, review the monthly plan limit and current account dashboard. - A batch is rejected despite being one request: The endpoint may count addresses within the batch individually or may have a lower batch cap. Check the chosen API’s specific rules and split the list accordingly.
- Access denied or unavailable endpoint: Confirm that the token, tier, account role, or product permission matches the endpoint. In particular, IPinfo says its default
/batchuses paid-tier/lookup; free-tier users should use/batch/lite. - Unexpected ban or cooldown: Stop repeated retries. IP-API.com documents a one-hour IP ban as a possible consequence of repeated excess against its free endpoint. Resume only in accordance with that endpoint’s rate rules.
- Results lack the registration details you expected: You may have used an enrichment or ASN endpoint rather than a registry lookup. Identify the missing field and use a source suited to that record type; ip-api.io specifically notes that its bulk endpoint does not supply network prefix, abuse contact, or registry allocation date.
- Commercial workflow on a free endpoint: Check the use restriction before continuing. IP-API.com’s documented free batch JSON endpoint does not permit commercial use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a bulk IP lookup identify the person using an address?
The provider documentation covered here describes address enrichment and network or registration information, not a reliable identification of an individual user.
Can I use geolocation results as proof of where a user is?
No precise location guarantee is established by the cited provider materials; treat returned location fields as enrichment data, not proof of a person’s physical location.
