To put content side by side in a page or post, add a Columns block and place the blocks you want inside it. To arrange classic widgets in a sidebar or footer, use the widget areas supplied by your active classic theme; the Widgets screen does not provide a universal control that turns arbitrary widgets into columns. Block themes use the Site Editor and blocks instead of traditional widget areas.
First choose where the content should appear
“Widgets in columns” can mean either a multi-column layout within a page or post, or items arranged in a site-wide area such as a sidebar or footer. The right editor depends on which one you mean and on your active theme.

Make columns in a page or post
The Columns block is the straightforward option when you want a visual multi-column layout. It arranges blocks; it does not automatically take existing classic widgets from the Widgets screen and convert them into columns.
- Edit the page or post where the layout should appear.
- Add a Columns block. In a new paragraph block, you can type
/columnsand choose the Columns block. - Choose a starting layout, such as equal-width or uneven columns, or use the default layout.
- Add the desired blocks inside each column. For repeated cards, for example, put an image, heading, and paragraph in each column.
- If needed, adjust the number of columns in the block settings. Preview the page at smaller screen sizes and check that the content stacks in a useful order.
Arrange widgets in a classic theme
A classic theme may provide widget areas such as a sidebar or footer. The active theme determines which areas are available, so the screen may look different on another site.

- Confirm that the active theme is a classic theme with widget areas.
- Open Appearance > Widgets, or open Appearance > Customize > Widgets if you use the Customizer route.
- Inspect the available areas, then add, move, or reorder items in the area where they should appear.
- If the block-based Widgets editor is shown, use blocks alongside existing widgets. For a classic or third-party widget that has not been converted, use its Legacy Widget block.
These areas place content where the theme defines them; they are not a universal grid-setting control. If a particular classic widget must appear in a multi-column arrangement, check whether the theme or that widget has its own layout controls. Otherwise, use a Columns block for block content or a theme layout feature that supports the arrangement.
Use the Site Editor in a block theme
Block themes use the Site Editor to edit templates and template parts. They do not provide traditional widget areas or the Appearance > Widgets screen in the same way a classic theme does. To place content in a site area, edit the appropriate template or template part in the Site Editor and use blocks there. For a page- or post-specific layout, use the Columns block in that content’s editor.

Display a widget from a theme template
For developers working in a custom theme or template, WordPress documents the the_widget() function as a way to display a widget programmatically. This is a template-development route, not a universal multi-column implementation: the function alone does not establish a layout for every widget.
