Add a small CSS rule to the site that displays the avatar: .avatar { border-radius: 50%; }. Give the image equal width and height if you want a true circle instead of an oval. Put the rule in a child theme or WordPress’s Additional CSS area so a parent-theme update is less likely to remove it.
The quickest way to make a Gravatar round
Open Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS in a classic WordPress theme, or add the rule to your child theme’s stylesheet:

}Save the stylesheet and refresh a page containing a comment or author avatar. The rule changes the image’s presentation only; it does not create, upload, or replace a Gravatar.

Use a complete rule when you control the image size
A square box guarantees a circular result and keeps the subject from stretching:

}The 96-pixel size matches the default size used by WordPress’s get_avatar() function. If your theme already supplies the dimensions, retain only the radius declaration or match the theme’s existing size.
Choose the right place for the CSS

When .avatar does not work
- Inspect the image. Right-click the avatar, choose Inspect, and select the rendered
<img>element. Record its real class; some themes use a name other thanavatar. - Target the image itself. Apply
border-radiusto the<img>, not just to a surrounding link or container. - Check the computed dimensions. Set equal
widthandheight. Unequal values create an oval, even when the radius is 50 percent. - Find overriding CSS. In developer tools, look for a later or more-specific declaration such as
border-radius: 0, a conflicting border, or a wrapper usingoverflowin a way that clips the image. - Clear caches. Purge the page cache, browser cache, and CDN cache after saving the rule.
- Check for replaced markup. If a plugin generates different HTML, use its documented class or modify the complete avatar string with WordPress’s
get_avatarfilter.
Adding a class in a custom WordPress template
get_avatar() retrieves an avatar image for a user ID, email address, MD5 hash, WP_User, WP_Post, or WP_Comment. It returns an <img> tag and accepts dimensions, alternative text, loading attributes, and classes.

}When you need data or a URL instead of ready-made markup
get_avatar_url() returns the avatar URL for a square image size, while get_avatar_data() returns avatar information such as URL, width, and height without rendering the complete image element. A custom template can use either result to emit its own <img> and apply the same circular class.

Block-editor and classic-theme options
WordPress’s Styles interface includes border-radius controls for block corners in WordPress 6.2 and later. Those controls can help when the avatar is represented by a block or a wrapper that exposes corner styling. Classic comment avatars are still commonly produced as image elements and usually require a selector such as .avatar.
WordPress uses Gravatars for avatars and lets administrators choose a default image for commenters who do not have a Gravatar. Rounding either image is a front-end styling change; it does not alter the account, source image, or default-avatar setting.

Keep the selector from affecting unrelated images
The generic .avatar selector is convenient when the theme follows WordPress’s standard class. If the site contains other elements using that class, scope it to the component instead:
