To inspect plugin and theme details manually, use the WordPress dashboard: open Plugins for installed plugins and Appearance > Themes for theme details. To create custom output, use get_plugins() for installed plugin metadata, wp_get_theme() for one theme, and wp_get_themes() to enumerate themes. Use themes_api() only when you need information from the WordPress.org theme directory.
Check plugin and theme information in the dashboard
The dashboard is the quickest option when you only need to inspect a site as an administrator. WordPress’s administration screens provide details about installed site components without requiring PHP.
- Plugins: Open Plugins in the administration menu to review installed plugins and their available details.
- Themes: Open Appearance > Themes, then select a theme to view its details. The screen also offers actions such as Activate and Live Preview, and can link to the theme’s WordPress.org information.
This is an administrator-facing view. If you need to show information in a custom page or template, use WordPress functions and escape values before placing them in public HTML.
Display installed plugin information with PHP
get_plugins() scans the plugins directory and returns plugin records keyed by plugin file name. The records include header data such as name, URI, version, description, author, text domain, and network status. WordPress Developer Resources describes it as a function that “Checks the plugins directory and retrieve all plugin files with plugin data.”

In a front-end template or other code that runs outside the administration area, load the plugin include file if the function is not already available:

?>This example prints basic information for every installed plugin; it does not automatically create a designed or access-controlled public listing. The function’s first result is cached, and the reference recommends calling it at least after the after_setup_theme action so plugins have an opportunity to filter the results.

Display the active theme or enumerate themes
Get one theme
Use wp_get_theme() when you need the active theme or one theme identified by its stylesheet. It returns a WP_Theme object, whose get() method reads header fields such as name, version, and author.

List installed themes
Use wp_get_themes() when you actually need a collection. It returns an array of WP_Theme objects based on its arguments; its options include errors, allowed, and blog_id. Those options are relevant when including themes with errors or filtering themes in multisite. The function can be expensive because its work grows linearly with the number of themes, so prefer wp_get_theme() when one theme is enough.
Avoid get_themes() in new code. WordPress deprecated it in version 3.4.0 and directs developers to wp_get_themes().

themes_api() supports actions including query_themes and theme_information, with arguments such as slug, search, author, tag, locale, and fields. Keep directory results clearly labeled as WordPress.org data: they are a different source from the metadata of files installed on the site.

Keep custom listings safe and relevant
- Escape output: Treat plugin and theme header values as output that must be escaped for its context. The examples use
esc_html()for plain HTML text. - Show only what readers need: A public list can expose implementation details. Choose fields deliberately and restrict access if the information is meant only for administrators.
- Use the narrowest lookup: Retrieve one theme with
wp_get_theme()instead of scanning every theme when you only need the active theme. - Account for multisite: If the listing is for a specific site or should include only themes allowed on it, consider the
blog_idandallowedoptions ofwp_get_themes().
