To stop a program from opening when you sign in to Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the program Off. You can also right-click Start, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the program, and choose Disable. These controls affect automatic launch at sign-in, not every form of background activity.
Disable a startup program in Settings
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Startup.
- Find the program you do not want to launch automatically.
- Switch its toggle to Off.
The change applies the next time you sign in. Microsoft documents this Settings path for applications registered with a Windows startup task in Configure Startup applications in Windows.
Use Task Manager for startup impact details
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps. If the compact Task Manager view appears, select More details first.
- Select the program, then choose Disable.
- To permit it again, select the same entry and choose Enable.
Task Manager lists the same registered startup applications available in Settings, while adding a Startup impact column. Microsoft’s in-product categories are based on measured CPU and disk activity:

These are Microsoft’s Task Manager thresholds, not a dated independent performance benchmark. A high-impact entry may make startup and background activity heavier, but disabling it does not guarantee a particular number of seconds saved. Settings or Task Manager: which should you use?

For a routine change, start with Settings. Choose Task Manager when you want to prioritize entries marked Medium or High impact or need to re-enable an app later.
If the program is missing from both lists
An application can start from a shortcut in a Startup folder without appearing as a registered startup task. Microsoft’s documented File Explorer method is:

- Open Run by pressing Windows key + R, enter
shell:appsfolder, and leave that window open. - Open Run again and enter
shell:startupfor your account, orshell:common startupfor every user on the PC. - In the Startup folder, locate the shortcut for the application you identified in the Apps folder.
- Delete that shortcut from the Startup folder. This removes the folder-based automatic launch; it does not uninstall the application.
The corresponding locations are:

Disabling a startup entry controls whether the program launches automatically when you sign in. It does not prove that every related process is stopped afterward, nor does it prevent you from opening the program manually.

Windows’ background-app permissions page is a separate control. Microsoft states that traditional desktop apps do not appear in that list and are not affected by that setting. If a desktop program continues background work, check the program’s own preferences for options such as “run in background,” “start with Windows,” or notification services. Registry Run keys
Some startup commands are stored in registry Run keys rather than the normal user interface. Microsoft lists these locations:

Registry editing is an advanced troubleshooting step. Microsoft warns that incorrect changes can have unintended consequences; back up the registry before modifying a value. Prefer Settings, Task Manager, or the Startup folders for ordinary startup management. The warning and key locations appear in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Clean boot
A clean boot is designed to isolate software conflicts, not to turn off one unwanted application. It involves disabling non-Microsoft services and startup items, so hardware or software features may temporarily stop working. Microsoft also cautions that advanced System Configuration changes should be used carefully and, when necessary, with support guidance. Follow the procedure in How to perform a clean boot in Windows only when diagnosing a broader problem.

What changes after you disable an entry?
- The program should no longer launch automatically at your next sign-in through that startup mechanism.
- You can still launch it normally from Start, Search, or its shortcut.
- Features that depend on an always-running helper—such as sync, update checks, overlays, or notifications—may not work until the main program or helper starts.
- Use Enable in Task Manager or switch the Settings toggle back to On if the change causes a problem.
