To remove Guest mode from Microsoft Edge, set the BrowserGuestModeEnabled policy to disabled. Edge does not provide a normal Settings-page switch for this; on Windows, use Local Group Policy or the Registry, and on macOS, deploy the policy as a managed preference. Then restart Edge and confirm the policy at edge://policy.
This requires administrator access on a personally managed computer. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may need to make the change centrally.
What disabling Guest mode does
Edge Guest mode opens a temporary profile that does not import browsing data from your existing Edge profiles. Microsoft says Guest browsing data is deleted when all Guest profiles are closed. Disabling Guest mode prevents users from opening those Guest profiles; it does not delete ordinary Edge profiles or stop users from creating them.

Guest mode is different from InPrivate browsing. Disabling Guest mode alone does not disable InPrivate, block another browser, or turn the computer into a kiosk. Microsoft manages InPrivate separately with the InPrivateModeAvailability policy.

Microsoft’s documented control is the administrative policy BrowserGuestModeEnabled. It is supported in Edge 77 and later on Windows and macOS, and is not supported on Android or iOS. The policy is not per-profile.
Disable Guest mode on Windows with Group Policy
Use this method if Local Group Policy Editor is available. If the Microsoft Edge policy folder is missing, install Microsoft’s Edge administrative templates first; the policy template file is MSEdge.admx.

- Press Win + R, enter
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge. In some policy views, the path appears as Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Enable guest mode.
- Select Disabled, then select Apply and OK.
- Refresh Windows policy from an elevated Command Prompt with
gpupdate /force, or wait for policy refresh. Close and reopen Edge. - In Edge, open
edge://policyand check the result as described below.
Group Policy Editor is not available in the same way on every Windows edition, including many Windows Home installations. If you cannot open it, use the Registry method below. Microsoft’s Edge configuration guide explains policy deployment and checking applied policies.
Disable Guest mode on Windows with the Registry
The Registry method writes a machine-level policy, so it affects Edge on the device and requires administrator privileges. Take care when editing the Registry; changing unrelated values can affect Windows or applications.

0(zero). Close Registry Editor. - Reopen Edge and visit

The required value is REG_DWORD 0 at HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, as documented in Microsoft’s Guest mode policy reference.

On macOS, the policy key is also BrowserGuestModeEnabled, and its value must be Boolean false. Deploy it as a managed Edge preference through your configuration-profile or MDM system, then restart Edge and check edge://policy where available.

There is no single universal Terminal command or plist location to give here: the packaging and delivery format depends on the management system. If the Mac is managed by an organization, ask its administrator to deploy the preference. To restore the default later, remove the managed preference and refresh or redeploy the profile.
Verify that the policy took effect
- Fully quit and reopen Edge after applying the change.
- Enter
edge://policyin the address bar. - Find
BrowserGuestModeEnabled. It should be listed as disabled or showfalseor0, depending on how Edge displays the policy. - Open Edge’s profile menu and confirm that Guest is absent or unavailable.
If the policy does not appear on the policy page, Edge has not received it. Confirm the exact policy name, Registry path and value type, or verify that the configuration profile/MDM payload was delivered correctly. Microsoft recommends edge://policy for reviewing policies applied to Edge; see its configuration guidance.
If Guest mode is still available
- Check the Windows value carefully: it must be a DWORD named
BrowserGuestModeEnabledwith data0, underHKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. A text/string value containing “0” is not the same. - Refresh and restart: Edge supports dynamic policy refresh, but restart the browser to ensure its interface updates. For Windows Group Policy, run
gpupdate /forcein an elevated Command Prompt. - Check for central management: Domain Group Policy, Intune, another MDM, or other organization management can override or reapply a local setting. Change the centrally assigned policy rather than repeatedly editing the local Registry. Microsoft’s MDM configuration guide covers deployment and validation.
- Make sure you did not choose the similarly named enforcement policy:
BrowserGuestModeEnforcedforces Guest-only browsing; it does the opposite of disabling Guest mode. Microsoft currently documents that policy for Windows and macOS from Edge 147, so check its policy reference if you encounter it.
If your goal is to block private browsing too
Guest mode and InPrivate are separate features. To block InPrivate, configure InPrivateModeAvailability separately and set it to Disabled. Disabling Guest mode by itself leaves InPrivate available, and neither policy prevents someone from using another browser or a different operating-system account.

Re-enable Guest mode
On Windows, remove the BrowserGuestModeEnabled value from HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, or set the Group Policy item back to Not Configured. To delete just the Registry value from an elevated Command Prompt, run:

/fThen restart Edge and check edge://policy. Microsoft says Guest mode is allowed when the policy is not configured. On macOS, remove the managed preference. If a work or school management system controls the device, it may reapply the restriction until its administrator changes the assigned policy.
