There is no single Google switch that controls every translation-related behavior. First identify what is changing: Google Search may choose results in another language, Chrome may translate the page you open, or the Google app may offer its own translation. Use the matching fix below rather than changing every language setting on your device.
Menu labels can vary by operating system, Chrome version, account, and interface language. The paths below reflect Google’s documented controls checked on August 18, 2026.
Identify what is being translated
- Search-result language: The title, snippet, or selection of results is in another language before you open anything.
- Chrome page translation: The result looks normal, but the destination webpage changes language after it opens.
- Google app translation: The Google app offers or starts translation when opening a page.
- Website-native localization: The site itself redirects or serves a localized version based on your country, cookies, URL, or browser language.
Google Search automatically estimates useful result languages from factors including your query, available content, Google’s interface language, device language, location, and language signals supplied by websites. Google’s explanation of result languages does not describe one universal “disable automatic translation” switch for every Search surface, account, browser, and app.

Six ways to stop unwanted translation
1. Change Google Search’s result language
Use this when the results themselves are being selected or displayed in the wrong language.

- Open Google Search in a browser.
- Open Search settings.
- Find Language for Search Results (the wording may differ slightly).
- Select your preferred language and save or confirm.
On iPhone or iPad, the Google app path is Profile picture or initial → Settings → Search (or Search settings), then adjust Language for Search Results and, if needed, Region for Search Results. See Google’s iOS and iPadOS Search settings.
When you are signed in, Search settings can follow you to other browsers where that Google account is signed in. Changing Google’s display language alone is not enough: Google says display language controls interface buttons and text, and does not necessarily change result language. 2. Use the Results Language Filter
This is useful when you want Search to return web results only in a selected language instead of relying entirely on automatic detection.

Desktop Search: Run a search, select Tools, choose Any language, and select the language you want. The control is documented in Google’s Results Language Filter help.
Google app on Android: Open the app, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings → General → Search Settings → Results Language Filter. Select one or more languages and tap Confirm.
Mobile browser: Open Google Search settings, scroll to Results Language Filter, select the language or languages, and confirm.
Google says the filter may not appear when English is the only selected language. It also may not affect every Search feature, such as some Knowledge Graph displays or Top Stories, and can fail when Google cannot reliably identify a page’s language.

3. Turn off Chrome translation on a computer
Use this when a webpage is translated after you click a result.
- Open Chrome and select More → Settings.
- Select Languages.
- Under Google Translate, turn Use Google Translate off.
In the same section, review Automatically translate these languages, Never offer to translate these languages, Translate into this language, and your preferred-language list. Remove a language from the automatic list or add it to the never-translate list if you want a targeted fix. Chrome desktop translation settings

4. Turn off Chrome translation on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More beside the address bar.
- Tap Settings → Languages.
- Under Translation settings, turn off Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate.
For one language, open Chrome → Settings → Languages, find the advanced translation controls if shown, and add the language to Don’t offer to translate these languages. Also check Automatically translate these languages if that language keeps switching automatically. Chrome for Android instructions
5. Turn off Chrome translation on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and tap More → Settings.
- Tap Languages.
- Turn Translate pages off.
If you previously chose “always translate,” open a page in that language, use the translation control, and choose Never translate [language]. You can also manage the language from Chrome’s Languages settings. Chrome for iPhone and iPad

Google app on iPhone or iPad: Open the app, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Settings → Search, find Google Translate, and turn it off. Google describes this as controlling whether the app offers to translate pages in other languages. In the same area, review Language for Search Results and Region for Search Results. Google app on Android: The documented language control is Profile picture or initial → Settings → General → Search Settings → Results Language Filter. Translation controls can differ by Android release, so do not assume the iOS Google Translate toggle exists under the same name on every Android phone.

When translation continues
- Check “always translate” rules. Remove the language from Chrome’s automatic-translation list, or add it to the never-translate list.
- Use a page-level rule. If Chrome offers Never translate this site, choose it for a site-specific exception. This option is not shown on every page or Chrome build.
- Compare signed-in and signed-out searches. Account-level Search settings can explain why behavior follows you across browsers.
- Test Incognito, another profile, or another browser. If the problem disappears, an extension, cookie, profile preference, or site data is likely involved.
- Disable translation extensions temporarily. Privacy tools and managed-browser policies can also alter language behavior.
- Clear Google site data only as a last resort. Record saved settings first; clearing data is a reset attempt, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check the website itself. A site may redirect by IP address, cookie, browser-language header, or URL. Use its language or country selector, or its original-language URL.
- Check administration. On a work, school, or family-managed device, a policy may hide or re-enable translation controls.
Why changing display language may not work
Google distinguishes the language used for its buttons and interface from the languages used for Search results. Therefore, changing Display language may leave result titles, snippets, or result selection unchanged. Use Language for Search Results, Results Language Filter, and Region for Search Results for Search behavior; use Chrome’s Languages settings for pages opened in the browser.
How to restore translation later
Reverse the relevant setting: turn Use Google Translate, Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate, or Translate pages back on; remove a language from Chrome’s never-translate list; or re-enable Google Translate in the iPhone or iPad Google app. Search language filters can likewise be changed or cleared in Search settings.
Bottom line: Disable Chrome translation when the destination page changes language. Adjust Search result language, region, or the Results Language Filter when the results themselves are wrong. These controls are separate, so turning off one does not necessarily affect the others.
