To fully disable Gmail Offline, first remove its stored data from Chrome, then turn off Enable offline mail in Gmail settings. Before you delete site data, reconnect to the internet and check Gmail’s Outbox: any message composed offline should be sent before its local data is removed. Deleting cookies may also sign you out of websites and reset site preferences.
What Gmail Offline does
Gmail Offline lets you read, search, and reply to messages without an internet connection in Chrome on a computer. Replies written offline wait in the Outbox and send when you reconnect. Google’s Gmail Offline instructions describe the feature for desktop Chrome; it is separate from the Gmail mobile app, offline modes in Google Drive or Docs, and mail stored by Outlook, Apple Mail, or another mail client.
You may want to turn it off to free browser storage, stop messages or attachments from syncing to a device, remove locally stored mail from a shared computer, or troubleshoot stale Gmail data. Disabling it does not delete messages stored in your Gmail account online.
Before you remove offline data
- Connect to the internet and open Gmail.
- Check the Outbox and wait for pending offline replies to send. Save any important unsent text elsewhere before continuing.
- Make sure you can sign back into your Google account, including access to any required two-step verification.
Disable Gmail Offline and remove its stored data
Google’s documented process has two parts: remove the offline data in Chrome, then switch off Offline mail in Gmail.

1. Remove site data in Chrome
- In Chrome on your computer, select More (the three-dot menu) and choose Settings.
- Open Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies.
- Select See all site data and permissions.
- Select Delete all data, review the confirmation carefully, and select Delete to confirm.
This is the route in Google’s Gmail Offline help. The wording or menu location may vary with Chrome version, operating system, language, or workplace policies. Depending on the interface and what you select, Delete all data may affect sites beyond Gmail. If Chrome lets you search or filter the site-data list, look for mail.google.com and, if needed, relevant google.com entries, then remove only the entries you intend to clear. Removing Google cookies can still affect sign-in sessions and preferences.
2. Turn off Offline mail in Gmail
- Open Gmail and go to Settings (the gear icon), then See all settings.
- Open the Offline tab.
- Clear the checkbox beside Enable offline mail, then save changes if Gmail offers that option.
You can also try the optional shortcut Gmail Offline settings. It may redirect or behave differently depending on your account and Gmail’s current interface.
Cache, cookies, and site data are different
“Clear the cache” is often used as shorthand, but clearing cached images and files alone may not remove the data Gmail Offline uses. Chrome distinguishes temporary cached resources from cookies and website storage. Google’s Chrome data-removal documentation includes hosted app data and local storage among the data that can be removed through browsing-data controls.

What is deleted—and what is not
Removing the relevant browser site data clears Gmail Offline’s local storage. It can also sign you out of affected websites and reset saved site preferences or permissions. You may need to sign back into Gmail. This action does not delete your server-side Gmail messages or your Google account. It also does not automatically remove Chrome-saved passwords, downloads, extensions, or browsing history; Chrome treats those as separate data categories.
After Offline mail is disabled, Gmail will not be available offline in that Chrome profile. Your mailbox remains available online. Gmail may take longer to load the first time after cleanup while it rebuilds ordinary browser resources.
If Gmail still downloads mail or will not load
- Return to Gmail’s Offline settings and confirm Enable offline mail is unchecked.
- Restart Chrome and check the relevant site data again. If Chrome clears site data whenever it closes, review that setting; Google’s site-data retention help explains related controls. The Chrome settings page can also be opened by entering
chrome://settings/content/siteDatain the address bar. - Update Chrome and temporarily disable extensions one at a time to check for conflicts.
- Try Gmail in an Incognito window only as a diagnostic. Gmail Offline does not work in Incognito, so this is not a way to keep Offline mail enabled.
- If the problem persists, try another supported browser and follow Google’s Gmail browser troubleshooting steps.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether Chrome or Gmail settings are managed.
If Offline mail keeps turning back on, also check whether someone is re-enabling it, the Chrome profile is being restored or synced, or the activity is actually coming from another mail app rather than Gmail in Chrome.

Want offline access but less storage use?
You do not have to disable the feature if you only need to reduce its footprint. Gmail’s Offline settings let you sync fewer days of messages and, where available, exclude attachments from offline downloads. See Google’s Gmail Offline help for the available controls.

Clearing Gmail site data is not a complete shared-computer privacy cleanup. Sign out of Gmail, and consider removing your Chrome profile if you no longer use the computer. Review saved passwords or passkeys, browsing history, downloads, and extensions separately if they could expose private information.

Does disabling Gmail Offline delete my emails?
No. It removes local browser data and disables offline access; it does not delete messages stored in Gmail online. Check the Outbox and let offline-composed messages send before removing site data.

Will clearing Gmail site data sign me out?
It may. Deleting cookies can sign you out of websites and reset some site preferences. Make sure you can sign back in before proceeding.
Is clearing the cache enough to remove Gmail Offline?
Not necessarily. Gmail Offline uses site storage, so follow Google’s site-data cleanup process and then turn off Enable offline mail.
Can I disable Gmail Offline in the Android or iPhone app?
These steps apply to Gmail in desktop Chrome, not the Gmail mobile app. They also do not disable offline storage in another mail client.

What happens to unsent messages composed offline?
They wait in Gmail’s Outbox until the connection returns. Reconnect and confirm they have sent before deleting Chrome site data.
Can I enable Gmail Offline again later?
Yes. You can return to Gmail’s Offline settings and enable it again. Google’s current instructions describe the feature for Chrome on a computer.
How can I remove data from only one Chrome profile?
Open the relevant Chrome profile, then use its site-data controls to find Gmail or Google entries and delete only those if the interface allows. Chrome profiles keep browser data separate, but removing Google cookies can still sign that profile out.
