If the shortcut does not work, press Esc, use Edge’s Settings and more (…) > Full screen command, or exit the website’s own video full-screen control. These steps apply to normal Edge windows—not every kiosk, app, or operating-system full-screen state.
First identify which full-screen mode you are seeing
In Edge’s browser full-screen mode, the browser chrome is hidden: tabs, the address bar and most window controls disappear, leaving the webpage as the main visible content. Microsoft documents this browser-level control and its policy at FullscreenAllowed.
If only a video, slideshow or embedded presentation fills the screen while the rest of the page behaves normally, the website’s media player is in full screen instead. Kiosk mode and macOS or Windows window controls are separate cases.
Exit Edge full-screen on Windows
- Click the Edge window or page so it has keyboard focus.
- Press F11. Microsoft lists F11 as the Windows shortcut that toggles Edge full-screen mode.
- If your keyboard assigns F11 to a hardware function, press Fn+F11 instead.
- If the browser remains hidden, press Esc. Esc is documented as an exit command in Edge’s full-screen context, although a video overlay or dialog may consume the first press.

Use the Edge menu instead
When keyboard shortcuts are unavailable, move the pointer to the top edge of the screen. If Edge’s controls appear, open Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner and choose Full screen (or the full-screen icon). Microsoft confirms this command in its Edge accessibility-features documentation; wording and icon placement can vary by release and operating system.
Exit Edge full-screen on macOS
- Press Control+Command+F to toggle Edge’s full-screen mode.
- Alternatively, press Esc while Edge has focus.
- If macOS itself is keeping the window in full screen, move the pointer to the top of the display and use the macOS window controls that appear.
Microsoft lists both Control+Command+F and Esc in its Edge keyboard-shortcuts documentation.

If only a video or presentation is full-screen
- Press Esc once. This often closes the player’s full-screen overlay.
- Look for the player button showing four outward-pointing corners and select it again.
- Right-click the video if its context menu offers an exit-full-screen command.
- If the tabs and address bar are also missing, use F11 on Windows or Control+Command+F on macOS; the browser itself is then likely full screen too.
A website player controls its own display state, so Edge’s browser shortcut may not close the video layer. Conversely, restoring Edge’s chrome does not necessarily stop a player that is still full-screen.
When Edge is running in kiosk mode
Kiosk mode is a managed, restricted Edge launch used for digital signage or public browsing. Microsoft documents that F11 is blocked in supported kiosk configurations, so repeatedly pressing it will not restore a normal browser window. See Configure Microsoft Edge kiosk mode.

On a managed device, use the organization’s configured exit procedure, sign out of the kiosk account, or contact the administrator. For Windows Assigned Access single-app kiosks, Microsoft says the default breakout method is Ctrl+Alt+Del unless an administrator configured a different sequence; details are in Configure a single-app kiosk. Do not edit kiosk policies or the registry on a work, school or public computer without authorization.

There is no ordinary consumer Edge setting that permanently disables every full-screen request. Windows administrators can control it with Microsoft’s FullscreenAllowed policy (documented for Windows and Edge 77 or later).

Block browser, website and extension requests
- Group Policy path: Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Policy: Allow full screen mode.
- Action: Disable the policy.
- Registry policy value:
FullscreenAllowedunderSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. - Support: Microsoft lists Windows support; this policy is not supported on macOS, Android or iOS.
Full policy behavior and the kiosk interaction are described at Microsoft’s FullscreenAllowed policy page. Disabling the policy also prevents command-line Edge kiosk launch, so do not apply it to a device that intentionally uses that kiosk configuration.
Remove only Edge’s full-screen keyboard command
The Windows ConfigureKeyboardShortcuts policy can remove a specific Edge shortcut without necessarily blocking every full-screen request made by an app, website or extension. Microsoft’s example payload is:

Full-screen troubleshooting checklist
- Tabs and address bar are missing: click Edge, then use F11 (Windows) or Control+Command+F (Mac).
- Only a video is enlarged: press Esc or use the player’s four-corners button.
- F11 does nothing: try Fn+F11, confirm Edge has focus, and check whether a function-key utility intercepts the key.
- Esc changes the page but not the browser: press it again after a video overlay, dialog or website control closes.
- F11 is deliberately blocked: the device may be in kiosk mode or governed by an organization policy; an administrator must provide the exit route.
- The address bar is absent but no full-screen shortcut works: the window may be maximized, an installed web app or kiosk may be running, or Edge’s interface may be temporarily hidden at the top edge. Ordinary Edge does not provide a standard setting to hide only the address bar; Microsoft community guidance discusses this limitation at About Microsoft Edge.
- F9 was pressed: Edge’s Immersive Reader is a separate feature, not browser full-screen; its shortcut is F9, as listed in the accessibility documentation.
