This blocks that app from launching a full-screen notification. It does not remove every advertisement: ads embedded in games, browser pages, ordinary notifications, or overlay windows use different mechanisms.
First identify what is taking over the screen
| What you see | Most likely control |
|---|---|
| It takes over while the phone is locked, idle, or you are using another app | Manage full-screen intents |
| A banner, heads-up alert, lock-screen item, or notification-shade message | The app’s notification settings |
| An ad between game levels or while moving through an app | The app’s own advertising system |
| A screen appears over the launcher or an unrelated app | Display over other apps, browser permissions, adware, or manufacturer software |
| A message comes from Chrome or another browser | That browser’s website-notification settings |
Android calls the first category a full-screen-intent notification. The USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT permission is intended for urgent events such as incoming calls and user-configured alarms, not general advertising. Android 14 (API level 34) lets you manage this access per app. See the platform explanation at Android 14 behavior changes.
Turn off full-screen intents for a suspicious app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose Special app access.
- Tap Manage full-screen intents.
- Review the apps listed with access.
- Switch off the app that should not be taking over the display.
Keep access enabled for a trusted alarm-clock or calling app if you rely on its full-screen alert. Android’s documented settings location and fallback behavior are described at source.android.com/docs/core/permissions/fsi-limits. If you cannot find the menu, use Settings search for full-screen intents, full screen, or special app access. Samsung One UI, Xiaomi HyperOS, Motorola, OnePlus, and other interfaces can rename or relocate the entry.
After access is denied, Android should prevent the full-screen notification activity and generally present a less intrusive notification, such as a heads-up alert. The exact appearance depends on the lock state, app, and manufacturer implementation.

Silence the app’s ordinary notifications
- Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.
- Select the suspected app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn off all notifications, or disable only promotional categories if the app exposes them.
Notification categories differ by app and phone. Disabling all notifications can also hide useful reminders, messages, or status updates.
Check “Display over other apps”
An ad that appears on the home screen or over an unrelated app may be using overlay access rather than a full-screen intent. Check Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps and disable access for apps that do not need it. This can affect legitimate features such as chat heads, screen filters, call utilities, password managers, and accessibility tools, so change only apps you recognize.

When the ad is inside a game or another app
An interstitial shown after a game level or between screens is normally part of the app’s own interface. The Android 14 full-screen-intent switch will not remove it. Your practical choices are:
- Check the app’s ad, privacy, or notification settings.
- Use the developer’s official ad-free purchase, if offered.
- Sign out or uninstall the app if you do not need it.
- Report deceptive behavior through Google Play when an app misrepresents what it is doing.
- Avoid sideloaded or modified APKs, which can include adware or behave differently from the Play Store version.
Android has no universal switch that strips advertisements from third-party app content. Network-level DNS or VPN filtering can affect several apps, but it may interfere with sign-in, payments, video playback, analytics, or ad-supported services and does not guarantee removal of locally generated promotional screens.

Keep calls and alarms working
Do not disable full-screen access indiscriminately. If incoming calls or alarms become less prominent, return to Manage full-screen intents and re-enable the legitimate Phone, video-calling, or alarm app. Android treats these uses differently because they may require immediate attention. Google Play’s policy limits automatic access for apps targeting Android 14 or later to apps whose core function involves alarms or phone/video calls, and prohibits disruptive advertising use of the permission: Google Play full-screen intent requirements.
If “Manage full-screen intents” is missing
- Confirm the phone is running Android 14 or later under Settings > About phone > Android version.
- Search Settings for full-screen and inspect Special app access.
- Open the suspected app’s App info page and review Notifications and special-access entries.
- Check Display over other apps separately.
- Some software shows no list when no installed app currently qualifies for the access.
Android exposes a dedicated settings action for this control, but manufacturers decide how the interface is presented; see the API reference at developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/Settings.html.

If the ad continues
- Close and reopen the suspected app so a screen created before the change is discarded.
- Disable its notifications.
- Revoke its overlay access.
- Review apps installed or updated shortly before the problem began.
- Restart the phone.
- Uninstall the suspected app if ads continue outside its normal interface.
If the app repeatedly asks you to restore full-screen access, that may be reasonable for an alarm or calling app. It is suspicious for an app whose core purpose is unrelated to calls or alarms; deny the request and consider removing the app. Google Play’s policy context is available at support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/13392821.
Why an older app may still have access
Android 14 can preserve full-screen-intent access for apps installed before the phone upgraded. Consequently, an older app may appear with access already enabled; revoke it manually if the app has no legitimate need. The Android 14 compatibility notes document this exception at developer.android.com/about/versions/14/behavior-changes-14.

The essential distinction
Manage full-screen intents is a permission control, not a general-purpose ad blocker. It stops a particular app from using Android’s full-screen notification mechanism. It does not remove in-app advertising, every browser ad, ordinary promotional notifications, manufacturer-promoted content, or all forms of adware. Match the symptom to the relevant control, then uninstall the responsible app when permissions and notification changes do not stop the behavior.
