WordPress can show a static homepage without removing its blog system. To do that, create or select a Page and set it under Settings > Reading. If posts still appear with a block theme, edit the active Front Page or Home template and remove its Query Loop. A genuinely blog-less site requires a separate approach, such as the optional Disable Blog plugin. Closing comments is a separate setting.

Decide what “disable the blog” means

These are different outcomes, and no single WordPress setting accomplishes all of them:

Goal Correct approach What it does not do
Remove posts from the homepage Assign a static Page in Settings > Reading; adjust the theme template if necessary. It does not remove posts, archives, feeds, direct URLs or the Posts feature.
Keep a blog but hide selected items Set individual content to Private or Password Protected. It does not restrict the entire site in core WordPress.
Remove the built-in Posts system Use a compatible plugin such as Disable Blog. It does not delete data or necessarily disable comments.
Make the whole site private Use appropriate access controls, a plugin or server authentication. A static homepage or hidden posts alone is not site-wide privacy.
Turn off comments Change discussion settings, close comments in bulk, or use a comment-control plugin. Disabling blog features alone does not guarantee that comments are closed.

Show a static homepage instead of latest posts

By default, WordPress displays the latest posts on the front page. A static front page is a specific Page that you manually select as the homepage.

Set the homepage

  1. Create or edit the Page you want visitors to see first, such as “Home.”
  2. In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Reading.
  3. Under the homepage display option, choose A static page.
  4. Select your Page in the Homepage field and save the changes.

You can optionally assign a different Page as the Posts page if the site should retain a blog index. Leave that field unassigned when you do not want a separate posts landing page. WordPress does not allow the homepage and Posts page to be the same Page.

Understand what this changes

This setting changes the page displayed at the site root; it does not delete posts or remove the Posts menu, post archives, feeds, search results or links to individual posts. Check those surfaces separately if they must also be unavailable.

If posts still appear with a block theme

Block themes can determine the front page through templates. The active Front Page template is used for the front page regardless of the Reading setting, so a template can continue to render posts after you select a static Page.

Remove the post list in the Site Editor

  1. Confirm that a block theme is active; the Site Editor is available only with block themes.
  2. Open Appearance > Editor > Templates.
  3. Open the Front Page template if one is present.
  4. Find the Query Loop or a related Post Template block that outputs posts.
  5. Remove it, replace it with the content you want, or adjust its query and layout.
  6. Check the Home template as well when your theme uses it for the posts display.
  7. Save, then preview the site in a logged-out browser window.

A Front Page template takes precedence for the front page, while a Home template can control a posts display depending on the templates included by the theme. Exact labels and available templates vary by theme. Classic themes do not use the Site Editor; use the theme’s own Customizer, template files or documented settings instead.

Hide individual posts or Pages

When only particular content should be unavailable publicly, use the editor’s Status & Visibility controls:

  • Private: visible only to users with the appropriate permissions.
  • Password Protected: visitors must enter the password to view the content.

These controls apply per item. Core WordPress does not provide a switch that hides the entire blog or limits it to a chosen group of users. For whole-site or broad access restrictions, WordPress documentation points to a suitable plugin or server-level access control.

Remove the built-in blogging features

If the site should not expose WordPress’s built-in Posts system at all, an optional plugin is the practical route. The WordPress Plugin Directory listing for Disable Blog describes a plugin that removes support for the built-in post type, hides blog-related administration screens and settings, and redirects blog-related URLs.

Before activating Disable Blog

  1. Choose and assign a static homepage under Settings > Reading.
  2. Review existing posts, categories, tags and related comments, and make sure you have a backup.
  3. Check the plugin’s current compatibility, version and maintenance information in the Plugin Directory; the listing reported version 0.5.5 and an update date of 2026-02-16, details that can change.
  4. Install and activate the plugin only after confirming that its behavior suits the active theme and other plugins.

Data access and reversibility

The listing says Disable Blog does not delete site data. While it is active, existing posts, categories, tags and related comments become inaccessible through the normal interface. Deactivating the plugin restores access. Permanently deleting that content is a separate action and should be taken only when deletion is intended.

Disable comments separately

Removing or hiding blog functionality does not necessarily turn off comments. Comments may remain enabled, including on Pages.

Close comments on existing content

Open an individual post or Page and disable comments in its discussion settings. For many items, use WordPress’s bulk editor to close comments across the selected content.

Change the default for new content

Adjust the discussion setting that controls whether new content allows comments. Changing that default does not automatically close comments on older posts; update existing items separately.

Use broader comment controls when needed

A dedicated option such as Disable Comments – Remove Comments & Stop Spam can provide broader controls across post types. Review how it handles existing comments: comments that should no longer appear may need to be deleted separately. Plugin behavior and compatibility can change, so check the current listing before installation.

Choose the least disruptive solution

  • Only the homepage is wrong: use a static Page, then inspect the Front Page or Home template if posts remain.
  • The site needs no public post system: configure the homepage first, then evaluate Disable Blog and its compatibility.
  • Some content must be restricted: use Private or Password Protected visibility per item.
  • The entire site must be private: use access controls designed for whole-site protection rather than homepage settings.
  • No discussions anywhere: close existing comments, change defaults for new content and consider a comment-control plugin.

Make a backup before changing templates or activating a plugin, and test the public site while logged out. Treat hiding, restricting and deleting as separate operations: each has different consequences for URLs, data access and recovery.
