The right way to disable antivirus depends on what is actually protecting your device. On a Mac, pause a third-party app such as Norton or Bitdefender in that app’s settings; quitting it may leave background protection running. On iPhone, “antivirus” apps usually provide features such as web protection, VPN, or content filtering—not unrestricted virus scanning—so turn off the specific feature or inspect its VPN and profile settings. Don’t confuse either step with disabling Apple’s built-in Mac security.
Choose the narrowest fix
| What’s happening | Try this first |
|---|---|
| A Mac antivirus blocks an installer | Verify the installer, then pause only the relevant protection feature temporarily. |
| macOS blocks one downloaded app | Verify its source and developer, then use Finder’s Open command if you trust it. Don’t disable all Mac security as a first step. |
| Your Mac is slow or security apps conflict | Check for duplicate real-time protection products and uninstall unwanted software with its official uninstaller. |
| An iPhone website or Wi-Fi connection is blocked | Temporarily turn off the app’s web protection, VPN, or filter; inspect VPN and device-management settings if the problem persists. |
| An iPhone reports that an app contains malware | Don’t bypass the warning. Delete the flagged app. |
| The device belongs to work or school | Ask the administrator before changing security apps, VPNs, or profiles. |
Before you turn protection off
First identify the product or feature causing the problem. Download an app or installer again from the developer’s official site or the Mac App Store, and verify the developer or signature when available. If the warning is unexpected, don’t treat a pause as proof that the file is safe. Keep any pause brief, avoid sensitive activity while protection is off, and note how to restore the setting before changing it.
“Disable antivirus” can mean several different things: pausing real-time file monitoring, switching off one feature such as web filtering, quitting the visible app, preventing it from opening at login, or uninstalling it. These actions are not interchangeable. A closed window or disabled login item may leave background services running; an uninstall may require a vendor-provided removal tool.
Turn off third-party antivirus on a Mac
Open the security product and look for a control named Pause, Real-Time Protection, Auto-Protect, Shield, File Shield, or Web Protection. Turn off only the feature involved in the problem. The exact names and locations can differ by product and version. When the test is complete, return to the same control and turn protection back on.

Norton
- Open Norton.
- Select Security.
- In the Antivirus tile, click Open.
- Open the Real-Time Protection tab.
- Turn off the relevant slider, such as Auto-Protect.
Norton warns that the Mac is less protected from internet threats while Auto-Protect is off and advises re-enabling it promptly. Follow Norton’s current Mac instructions if your interface differs.
Bitdefender
- Open Bitdefender.
- Select Protection, then open the antivirus section.
- Turn off Bitdefender Shield.
Bitdefender identifies a disabled Shield as a security issue and recommends keeping the pause as short as possible. See the Bitdefender Mac guide for product-specific details.
Malwarebytes, Intego, and other products
For Malwarebytes, open the Mac app and look for its real-time protection or protection settings; controls vary by version. If you cannot find a switch, consult the Malwarebytes support hub rather than guessing. Apply the same principle to ESET, McAfee, Avast, AVG, Sophos, F-Secure, Webroot, TotalAV, and other suites: use the product’s own pause or feature control, or its official uninstaller.

Closing an Intego window, or another antivirus app’s window, may not stop protection. Background components can continue running; Intego describes this behavior in its background-program guidance. If a setting appears to switch itself back on, a background service, system extension, self-protection feature, or device-management policy may be responsible.
If macOS blocks an app
Gatekeeper checks downloaded apps, plug-ins, and installer packages for factors including developer identity, notarization, and signs of alteration. That is different from a third-party antivirus scan. For a trusted app, verify that you obtained it from the developer’s official source, then try opening it from Finder with the contextual Open command and review the warning. Apple explains Gatekeeper and app assessment in its security guide.
If a third-party antivirus still blocks the file, changing Gatekeeper settings may not help. Prefer a narrowly targeted exception offered by the antivirus vendor, and remove that exception after testing. Don’t create an exclusion for a file you haven’t verified.

Advanced: temporarily change Gatekeeper assessment
This is a developer/testing procedure, not a normal antivirus toggle. Apple documents these commands for changing Gatekeeper assessment policy. In Terminal, check the current status:
Recommended Free Tools
spctl --status
To disable assessment, enter:
sudo spctl --master-disable
Enter an administrator password if prompted. To restore assessment, run:
sudo spctl --master-enable
Check again with spctl --status; the output reports assessments enabled or assessments disabled. Re-enable it as soon as testing is finished. As Apple’s Xcode documentation describes, this changes Gatekeeper’s application-assessment policy; it does not switch off every macOS security layer, including XProtect or a third-party product. XProtect is Apple’s built-in malware detection and remediation technology, not a normal user-facing on/off switch. See Apple’s macOS malware protection guide. System Integrity Protection is also not a routine antivirus setting; don’t disable it to solve an ordinary app-installation problem.

Uninstall antivirus from a Mac
- Open the product and look for Uninstall, Remove, or Uninstall Product.
- Use the vendor’s official uninstaller when provided. Simply dragging the app to the Trash may not remove its background components.
- Restart the Mac when removal is complete.
- Check System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions for remaining background items or extensions.
- Check System Settings → Privacy & Security for permissions, such as Full Disk Access, that may be left behind.
- On an organization-managed Mac, check System Settings → General → Device Management only with your administrator’s guidance.
- Confirm the app, menu-bar item, VPN, filter, and related background service are gone. Don’t manually delete system files or extensions unless the vendor instructs you to.
Multiple real-time antivirus products can conflict or create performance problems. Remove duplicates rather than leaving several active; Intego explains the risks of competing antivirus software. Uninstalling an app does not necessarily cancel its subscription, so handle billing separately with Apple or the vendor.

iOS apps are sandboxed and cannot freely scan every other app or the operating system like traditional desktop antivirus. iPhone security apps instead commonly offer features such as web protection, scam detection, VPN or DNS filtering, ad blocking, call protection, text-message filtering, and identity alerts. Apple describes the platform’s app security and sandboxing.

Pause a specific feature
Open the security app and switch off only the feature related to the problem—such as Web Protection, Safe Browsing, VPN, Ad Blocking, Call Protection, or Text Message Filtering. Labels vary. If connectivity returns, turn features back on one at a time to identify the cause. Some filters are controlled by a VPN or configuration profile rather than an in-app switch.

Check a VPN, filter, or profile
- Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. The exact VPN display can vary; use Settings search for “VPN” if needed.
- Inspect the VPN, filter, or profile associated with the security app. You can also check the app’s own VPN switch.
- If a VPN reconnects automatically, the app or profile may be managing it. Remove the associated app or profile only if it is yours or clearly unwanted.
- To remove a profile, select it and tap Delete Profile, then follow the prompts and restart the iPhone.
Removing a profile can also remove associated settings, apps, accounts, or data. Apple’s instructions for installing and removing profiles explain the effects. If the iPhone is managed by an employer or school, contact its administrator first; a profile may control required VPN, network, or security settings.
Delete the security app
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Tap Remove App, then Delete App.
- Confirm the deletion.
Apple’s app removal instructions cover the process. Deleting the app does not automatically cancel an App Store subscription; check Apple’s subscription settings or contact the vendor. If you can’t remove the app, Screen Time restrictions or device management may be preventing it.
If iPhone says an app contains malware
Do not turn off a filter or try to bypass the alert to keep using the app. Apple advises deleting an app that triggers an iPhone or iPad malware warning. See Apple’s guidance on malware alerts. If the message appears only in a browser and urges you to call a number or install something, it may be a deceptive webpage pop-up rather than an iOS system alert; don’t follow its instructions.
Restore protection and test
- Turn the Mac antivirus feature back on, or restore any temporary exclusion you made.
- On iPhone, re-enable the app feature or VPN if you still need it; remove only settings you deliberately no longer want.
- Restart if a background service, VPN, or network filter does not recover cleanly.
- Test the original app installation or connection again. If the problem returns, use the product’s support guidance or contact your administrator instead of leaving protection disabled.
For connection problems, Apple also recommends checking third-party VPN, firewall, antivirus, parental-control, and content-blocking software; see its network connectivity guidance. If you’re removing a product because it is malfunctioning, keep Apple’s built-in protections enabled and consider a replacement only when you need a particular feature such as multi-device coverage, web protection, parental controls, or centralized management. Don’t install a second real-time antivirus just to test the first one.
