Windows interruptions come from different places: system tips, app notifications, Start recommendations, Widgets, browser pop-ups and website alerts. There is no single switch that blocks them all. In Windows 11, start with Settings > System > Notifications, turn off Windows tips and welcome messages, then adjust the specific app or feature responsible. For most people, turning off banners and sounds while keeping notifications in Notification Center is quieter—and safer—than disabling all alerts.
If the message is a new browser window, a lower-right alert naming a website, or a prompt from another app, use the matching controls below rather than switching off Windows notifications globally.
Identify what is producing the interruption
| What you see | Likely source | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| A lower-right banner showing an app name | Windows notification from an app | Settings > System > Notifications |
| Windows tips or a post-update welcome message | Windows notification preferences | Notifications > Additional settings |
| Recommendations inside Settings | Windows suggested content | Settings > Privacy & security > General |
| Recommended apps or recent files in Start | Start-menu recommendations | Start settings and recommendation controls |
| A news or weather badge on the taskbar | Widgets | Widgets notification settings or Taskbar settings |
| A new browser window or tab | Website pop-up | Microsoft Edge pop-up controls |
| A lower-right alert naming a website | Website notification permission | Remove the site’s permission in Edge; review Windows notifications too |
| Repeated backup, antivirus, cloud-sync or account prompts | The named third-party app | That app’s notification settings |
| A full-screen warning, fake infection alert or prize message | Possibly a deceptive site, extension or unwanted software | Close it safely, check site permissions and extensions, then scan the PC if needed |
The app or site name shown on a banner is often the fastest clue. Windows notifications, browser pop-ups and website alerts have separate controls, so changing one may not stop the others.

Quick cleanup for Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Under Additional settings, turn off Get tips and suggestions when using Windows and Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested.
- In the same Notifications page, leave notifications on but disable banners and sounds for apps that interrupt you. Keep useful alerts in Notification Center.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > General and review personalized ads, Start and search personalization, and suggested Settings content.
- Unpin unwanted Start items and adjust the recommendation controls available on your Windows build.
- Turn off Widgets badges and announcements, or hide Widgets from the taskbar.
- If a browser is responsible, block pop-ups and remove notification permission for the specific site in Edge.
Labels and grouping can vary by Windows 11 release. If you cannot find an option, search Settings for tips, suggestions or welcome experience. Microsoft’s notification guidance describes the current notification and Do Not Disturb controls.
Turn off Windows tips and post-update prompts
- Select Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Expand Additional settings.
- Switch off Get tips and suggestions when using Windows.
- Switch off Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested.
These options target Windows tips and welcome or “what’s new” experiences. They do not control every app notification, website alert or advertisement. If the wording differs, search Settings for the terms above; an update or device policy may change what appears. See Microsoft’s Windows notification instructions.
Keep useful notifications, lose the banners
A notification banner is the temporary pop-up on the desktop. Notification Center stores alerts so you can review them later. Sounds and lock-screen notifications are separate options.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- To silence everything, turn off Notifications. This is the broadest option and can hide useful alerts.
- For a more selective approach, keep notifications enabled and choose an app under Notifications from apps and other senders.
- For that app, turn off Show notification banners and, if wanted, Play a sound when a notification arrives. You can separately control whether its alerts appear in Notification Center or on the lock screen.
For most users, disabling banners and sounds for noisy apps is a better balance than switching off all notifications. Keep alerts you rely on—for example, Windows Security, backup failures, low-storage warnings, battery alerts, calendar reminders or account notices. Microsoft explains the per-app notification options.
Reduce recommendations and ad personalization
Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > General. Review these controls:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID: Turn this off to limit personalization based on Windows’ advertising identifier. It does not necessarily reduce the number of ads, and it does not control all website advertising or every ad shown by Microsoft or third parties.
- Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches: Turn this off to reduce personalization based on the apps you open. Windows Search remains available, and this does not remove all Start content.
- Show me suggested content in the Settings app: Turn this off to reduce recommendations inside Settings. It does not silence unrelated apps or websites.
These settings address specific kinds of recommendations and personalization; they do not promise an ad-free Windows installation. Microsoft says disabling the advertising ID changes ad personalization, not necessarily ad quantity. Read its Windows 11 privacy and recommendations guidance for details.
Reduce clutter in the Start menu
Windows 11’s Recommendations area can include recently added or frequently used apps and recently opened files. To tidy it:
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open Start, right-click an unwanted item and select Unpin from Start where that option is available.
- Right-click the lower part of the Start menu and choose Start settings.
- Review the recommendation, recently added app and recent-file controls available on your build; turn off categories or providers you do not want.
The controls vary between Windows 11 releases. Some builds let you reduce recommendation categories or providers, but standard Settings do not guarantee that the whole Recommendations area can be removed on every PC. Unpinning an item also does not necessarily disable the feature that suggested it. See Microsoft’s Start-menu customization guidance.
Quiet Widgets badges and announcements
Widgets can show taskbar badges and announcements, which may look like Windows pop-ups. To change them, open the Widgets board, select your account or profile button, and open Notifications. Turn off unwanted notification categories. In Widgets settings, switch off Show notification badges on the taskbar and Show announcements on the taskbar.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
To hide the taskbar entry, right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings and switch off Widgets under Taskbar items. This removes the taskbar item; it does not necessarily uninstall Widgets or stop the board from opening with Windows key + W. Widgets rely on the Windows Web Experience Pack and Microsoft Edge. For the available controls, see Microsoft’s Widgets guidance.
Block pop-ups and website notifications in Edge
Stop new pop-up windows and tabs
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Settings.
- Open Cookies and site permissions > Pop-ups and redirects.
- Confirm that blocking is enabled. Add an exception only for a site you trust and that genuinely needs pop-ups.
Edge’s pop-up blocker is on by default. It blocks automatically opened windows or tabs, but it does not prevent every kind of site message.

Stop alerts from a particular website
Website notifications are separate from ordinary pop-ups. A website can send alerts through Windows even when Edge blocks pop-up windows. In Edge, open Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications and remove or block permission for the offending site. Also check that site’s entry under Windows’ Settings > System > Notifications, if it appears there. For Edge pop-ups, permissions and troubleshooting, see Microsoft’s Edge pop-up guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
If pop-ups continue
- In Edge, open Extensions > Manage extensions.
- Disable unfamiliar extensions one at a time and test whether the problem stops.
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or need.
- Check whether the alert names a third-party app; that app may have its own notification controls.
If the interruption is a search suggestion in Edge’s address bar rather than a pop-up, its setting is separate: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected experiences > Address bar and search. Microsoft documents this in its Edge privacy guidance.

Use Do Not Disturb for temporary quiet
For a meeting, presentation, game or focused work session, use Settings > System > Notifications > Do not disturb, or turn it on from the notification-center controls. You can schedule it or have it activate automatically during conditions such as set times, display duplication, gaming or full-screen use. Do Not Disturb suppresses most banners, but alarms, reminders and selected priority notifications may still get through. Use it for temporary quiet rather than as a guarantee that every alert will be blocked. See Microsoft’s Do Not Disturb instructions.
If interruptions keep coming back
- Check the source again: Identify the app, site or feature named on the alert before changing more settings.
- Check Edge permissions: Blocking windows does not revoke a website’s notification permission.
- Review extensions and apps: An extension or third-party app can produce new alerts independently of Windows tips.
- Consider device management: A work or school administrator may control settings by policy, preventing changes or restoring them.
- Look for changed labels: A Windows feature update can move or rename an option. Search Settings for its wording.
- Treat deceptive full-screen warnings cautiously: They may be webpage content or unwanted software, not a Windows security message. Close the page rather than following instructions or calling a number shown in the warning; check extensions and run a security scan if the behavior persists.
If you change a setting and later want the alerts back, re-enable the relevant app under Settings > System > Notifications, restore its banners or sounds, turn the Additional settings options back on, re-enable Widgets under Taskbar settings, or restore the site’s Edge notification permission. Advertising ID and Start personalization can also be restored under Privacy & security > General.
Windows 10: legacy paths
Windows 10 uses older menu names, so Windows 11 paths above do not apply exactly. For app alerts, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions. For privacy options, open Settings > Privacy > General. Windows 10 support and free security updates ended on October 14, 2025; in 2026 it should be treated as an unsupported legacy platform unless a separate support arrangement applies.
