There’s no universal iPhone, iPad, or Android setting that removes every ad from every mobile game. For one game, its own “Remove Ads” purchase is usually the most reliable fix. Offline play and DNS filtering can reduce network-delivered ads, but may also disable rewards or break game features. Turning off personalized ads changes targeting—not usually the number of ads.
First, identify what you want to stop
Games use several kinds of advertising, and a method that affects one may not affect another:
- Banners stay on screen while you play.
- Interstitials take over the screen between levels or after a loss.
- Rewarded videos are optional ads exchanged for coins, lives, boosts, or retries.
- Playable ads and store redirects may follow a video or open the App Store or Google Play.
- Developer promotions promote the game’s own paid version or another title. These may be built into the game rather than fetched from an ad network.
- Personalized ads are selected using information such as an advertising identifier or activity. Changing personalization settings does not necessarily remove the ad.
If the game itself displays a promotion, a network filter may not help. For ordinary ad-network interruptions, try the options below in order.

Open the game and look in its store, settings, or pause menu for Remove Ads, No Ads, Ad-Free, Premium, or a similar option. This is usually the safest and most compatible solution because the game knows the purchase was made and can keep its normal online features working.

Before paying, read the exact purchase description. Check whether it is a one-time purchase or subscription, whether it removes only forced ads or also rewarded offers, and whether it applies to a game account or only to the current platform. An iOS purchase may not carry over to Android, or vice versa. “Ad-free” may still leave developer announcements, upgrade prompts, store links, or optional rewarded videos.
- Complete the purchase through the game’s App Store or Google Play billing flow.
- Close and reopen the game if ads continue.
- Look for Restore Purchases in the game if you reinstall or change devices. Apple’s guidelines require restoration for restorable in-app purchases, but whether a particular ad-removal item is restorable depends on its type and the game’s implementation. See Apple’s App Review Guidelines.
- If the purchase is missing, contact the game developer with the store receipt or transaction details. Apple or Google processes the payment; the developer determines what the purchase unlocks in the game.
Try offline play if the game supports it
Some games cannot show ads that they are unable to download. Test offline play before changing other settings:
- While connected, launch the game and make sure your current progress is available.
- Turn on Airplane Mode, or disable both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Return to the game and test a level.
This is a free, reversible test—not a guaranteed fix. The game may require an internet connection, or cached ads and locally built-in promotions may still appear. Offline play can also disable cloud saves, login, multiplayer, leaderboards, events, daily rewards, and rewarded videos.

To reconnect safely, turn Wi-Fi or cellular data back on, restart the game if needed, and let it sync before making purchases or relying on a cloud save.
Reduce ads across games with DNS filtering
A DNS filter checks the internet addresses an app requests and can block requests to known ad or tracking domains. That can reduce network-delivered ads in multiple apps, but it cannot reliably remove ads embedded in the game, stored on the device, or served from the same domain as game content. It may also block the request that would have delivered a reward.
Android: set a Private DNS provider
On many Android phones, you can configure a filtering provider without installing a separate app. Menu labels vary by Android version and manufacturer, so search Settings for Private DNS if the path differs.

- Open Settings and search for Private DNS.
- Open the Private DNS setting and select Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the hostname provided by the DNS service and save. For example, AdGuard lists
dns.adguard-dns.comfor its ad-blocking DNS service; check its official setup information before using it. - Reopen the game and test normal play as well as any rewarded-ad feature you use.
DNS filtering can leave a blank ad space, make an ad or level load indefinitely, stop a reward from being offered, or interfere with login and other services. If that happens, go back to Private DNS, select Automatic or Off (the available option varies), then restart the game. Restart the phone if the problem persists.

iPhone and iPad: use a reputable DNS-filtering app or profile
iOS does not have Android’s equivalent simple, system-wide Private DNS hostname switch. A DNS-filtering app or provider configuration can filter requests beyond Safari; a Safari content blocker alone generally affects Safari, not ads inside native games.
- Choose a provider and install its app from the US App Store, or follow its official configuration instructions. Examples include NextDNS and AdGuard for iOS. Their features and paid-plan requirements differ; check the current listing and provider documentation.
- Create or select a filtering profile and enable protection.
- If iOS asks to add a VPN or DNS configuration, approve it only if you trust the provider and understand what it does.
- Test your game. If it fails, pause protection or use the provider’s controls to exclude the affected app or domain, where available.
DNS filtering can interfere with game assets, login, payments, analytics, and rewarded videos. A provider may also use a VPN-style connection, which can conflict with another VPN or network filter. Review the provider’s privacy policy: DNS services may receive information about the domains your device looks up. Avoid profiles from unknown websites or forum posts.

Privacy settings reduce tracking, not most game ads
Use these settings if your goal is to limit ad personalization or tracking. They are not general-purpose ad blockers.
iPhone and iPad
- To turn off Apple-delivered personalized ads, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising and turn off Personalized Ads. Apple says ads may become less relevant without becoming fewer, and this setting concerns Apple advertising rather than third-party game ads. See Apple’s explanation.
- To limit apps’ ability to request cross-app and cross-site tracking permission, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This does not guarantee fewer ads.
Android
Depending on your Android version and device, advertising controls may be under Settings > Privacy > Ads or Settings > Google > All services > Ads. Search Settings for Ads if neither path appears. You may be able to reset or delete the advertising ID. Google notes that apps may still show ads and may use other signals or identifiers, so this will not make a game ad-free. DNS filtering blocks selected internet requests; it does not surgically remove just the ad from a game screen. A game can rely on the same service for advertising and other functions, wait for a blocked request, or include promotions locally. Results can also change after a game or ad-network update.

- A rewarded ad does not load: the game may hide the reward or wait for a video that cannot arrive. Turn off filtering if you want to claim it; do not expect a reward when the ad request was blocked.
- A level, image, or login fails: an ad and essential game content may share a domain. Disable the filter or add an exception if your provider supports one.
- The game is stuck on an ad screen: pause filtering, fully close and reopen the game, and reconnect to the internet. Restart the device if needed.
- Ads still appear: they may be cached, built into the app, or served from an unblocked or shared domain. No device-level filter guarantees removal of every in-game ad.
A conventional VPN is not automatically an ad blocker. A VPN primarily routes and encrypts traffic through a provider; it reduces ads only if it includes an effective DNS or ad-filtering feature.
For parents: separate ad exposure from purchases
Blocking ads does not prevent accidental purchases, and purchase controls do not remove ads. Review a child’s game and its age rating, use the device’s parental controls to require authentication for purchases or disable in-app purchases where appropriate, and talk through what an ad or offer is asking the child to do. An ad-free purchase may still leave upgrade prompts or developer promotions.
The FTC advises parents to review games and use purchase protections because children may encounter ads and unexpected payment prompts during play. See the FTC’s guidance on kids’ games, ads, and payments. Apple and Google have rules for advertising in children’s apps, but those rules do not mean every children’s game is ad-free. Do not install an unknown filtering profile or sideloaded game on a child’s device.
Avoid modified or cracked games
Unofficial modified APKs, cracked games, and rooting or jailbreaking solely to remove ads are poor trade-offs for most players. They can expose the device to malware, put credentials or saves at risk, break updates, trigger account restrictions, or bypass legitimate purchases. Stick to the game’s official store version and reputable filtering providers.
When to choose another game
If a game has no ad-removal option, interrupts nearly every action, depends on ads for basic progress, or breaks when you filter its ads, switching games may be the only practical way to get a less interrupted experience. If an ad appears deceptive or impossible to close, report it through the relevant app store. Apple’s guidelines require accessible close or skip controls for certain interruptive ads, and Google Play’s policies restrict disruptive or deceptive ads.
