Deploy the Citrix Workspace app from Microsoft Intune’s Enterprise App Catalog when you want a prepared Win32 package without maintaining your own installer wrapper. “Citrix Receiver” is the former product name, and the catalog may still list a legacy Receiver entry alongside Workspace app and Workspace app LTSR. Choose the package that matches your Citrix support standard—not simply the first search result—and verify its live version and settings in your tenant.
This guide covers prerequisites, catalog selection, setup, pilot assignments, endpoint validation, and troubleshooting. An Intune status of Installed confirms delivery, not that users can authenticate to StoreFront or Citrix Cloud and launch a published resource.
Before you begin
- Intune and licensing: You need an Intune tenant, enrolled Windows devices, and permissions to add and assign apps. Enterprise App Management requires an additional subscription alongside Intune Plan 1 or Plan 2; it is available standalone or through the Intune Suite. Confirm licensing for your agreement and region in Microsoft’s Enterprise App Management documentation.
- Compatible endpoints: Check the selected package’s live architecture and minimum OS requirements. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 devices remain allowed in some Intune scenarios, but does not guarantee all functionality will continue to work as it does on supported Windows versions.
- Citrix access is ready: Users need a configured Citrix access service—such as StoreFront, Citrix Cloud, or another supported environment—and network access to it. Installing the client does not create that service or configure user access.
- Pilot and ownership: Identify a small test group and check for existing Citrix installations or deployments via Configuration Manager, another Intune app, GPO, scripts, Citrix self-update, or a reference image. Decide which system owns installation and updates before assigning the catalog package.
- Network access: Ensure endpoints can reach required Intune content endpoints and organizational Citrix services. Microsoft documents catalog content delivery through Microsoft infrastructure, including
*.manage.microsoft.com; validate your firewall and proxy configuration against current Microsoft network requirements.
Choose the right Citrix catalog entry
Search the catalog for Citrix Workspace app, Citrix Workspace app LTSR, and, where a verified legacy need exists, Citrix Receiver. Receiver was replaced by Workspace app beginning in 2018, but older documentation, paths, and administrative references may still use the Receiver name. The choices are not interchangeable by default.

Before proceeding, record the selected package’s name, publisher, version, architecture, release channel, installer type, commands, requirements, and detection rules as displayed in your tenant. Catalog inventory changes over time, and Microsoft documents that catalog data can be cached for up to an hour. Do not use the historical version or screenshots in the January 22, 2025 HTMD walkthrough as a statement of the current package: its example showed Citrix Receiver 14.12.0.18020.

Add the app in Intune
- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Apps > Windows apps, or use Apps > All apps if that is the layout shown in your admin center.
- Select + Add.
- Choose the Enterprise App Catalog app type. Depending on the current UI, this may be labeled Enterprise app catalog app or Windows catalog app.
- Select Search the Enterprise App Catalog, search for your approved Citrix entry, select it, and continue. If the expected package is missing immediately after a catalog change, allow for caching before troubleshooting.
Review the app configuration
App information
Give the entry a name that identifies the actual product and channel, such as Citrix Workspace app – Current Release or Citrix Workspace app – LTSR. Review the publisher and version, description, Company Portal details, category, icon, and any support or privacy information. Do not label a Workspace app package “Receiver” merely because an old article used that name.
Program settings
The catalog supplies package-specific installation metadata, which can include install and uninstall commands, installation context, restart behavior, time limit, and return codes. Review these fields and generally retain the generated values unless you have tested a reason to change them. Microsoft describes Enterprise App Catalog offerings as prepared Win32 applications with prepopulated deployment information.

Commands from other packages or articles are examples, not universal switches. For instance, the historical Receiver catalog example used CitrixReceiver.exe /silent /noreboot; a separate, manually packaged Workspace app guide shows CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /silent and CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /uninstall /silent. Those commands belong to their respective package workflows. Use the command generated for the package you selected, and check its install behavior and restart implications before deployment.
Requirements and detection
Review the generated architecture, minimum OS, and any other requirements shown. The historical Receiver example recorded 64-bit architecture and Windows 10 version 1607, but those are article-era values, not current requirements. The selected package’s live requirements are the ones to assess.

Intune detection rules determine whether the app is present. Keep a working catalog rule unless testing shows a problem. Check that it matches the chosen product, architecture, and install context. A file-existence rule can report success when an old or incomplete installation has left a file behind; a correctly configured version rule can be more useful for upgrade management. Do not copy a Receiver-specific path as a universal Workspace app rule. A separate manual-packaging example uses %ProgramFiles(x86)%CitrixICA ClientReceiverReceiver.exe, but the actual layout and rule must be validated for the package deployed.
Scope tags and review
Apply the appropriate scope tags for delegated administration in your organization. Before creating the app, review the selected package, app information, program settings, requirements, detection rules, and assignment plan. Assign to a pilot first
- Create or select a small Entra ID user or device group that represents the intended Windows population.
- Assign the app as Available if users should install it through Company Portal, or Required if it must be installed automatically for the target group.
- Exclude groups or devices with known incompatibilities or a competing deployment method. Avoid having multiple management systems control the same client’s installation and update lifecycle.
- Test installation, Citrix discovery, authentication, and a published application or desktop before expanding the assignment.
- Document who owns updates and how users will be protected from disruptive changes.
Microsoft’s Enterprise App Catalog auto-update option applies to catalog apps assigned as Required; Available assignments retain the existing update workflow. Auto-update reduces packaging work, but it has no phased rollout rings, automatic rollback, or automatic uninstall remediation. A new client release could change authentication behavior or interrupt active sessions. Pilot it and plan a maintenance window before broad deployment.

Monitor and verify installation
Open the app in Intune and review its device and user installation status, including per-device details and reported version where available. Investigate states such as Pending, Failed, or Not applicable in the context of the assignment and device. For an Available assignment, users can find the app in Company Portal and install it themselves; confirm the resulting state there as well.

Then test the client itself on a pilot endpoint:
- Launch Citrix Workspace app and confirm the expected account discovery or StoreFront/Workspace URL configuration works.
- Authenticate using the intended user method and verify any required single sign-on behavior.
- Launch a real published desktop or application and confirm the session functions, not just that the client opens.
- Test upgrade behavior with users who have active sessions, if upgrades will be automated.
Company Portal showing Installed—or Intune reporting Installed—proves neither successful Citrix authentication nor access to a published resource. Treat delivery and service functionality as separate checks.
Troubleshooting common problems

| Intune says Installed but the client is missing or unusable | Inspect the detection rule, install context, and actual file/version/registry evidence on the device. A stale file can satisfy existence-only detection. Change the rule only after validating it against the selected package. |
| Content remains in preparation or download is pending | Check device connectivity, proxy behavior, firewall allowlists, and Intune content delivery. Microsoft advises deleting and recreating the app if catalog content remains unsynchronized after several hours. Recreate only after checking assignments and documenting the current configuration. |
| Upgrade disconnects a user | Test with active sessions, schedule a maintenance window, and avoid untested forced upgrades. If you need staged rollout or a controlled rollback path, consider a manually packaged Win32 lifecycle instead of catalog auto-update. |

For Win32-related endpoint failures, review the Intune Management Extension logs and the device’s reported installation details. If recovery requires reverting to an earlier client, use an approved prior package and tested uninstall or remediation plan; do not assume the catalog can roll back automatically. Depending on the deployment, recovery may mean removing the assignment, assigning an uninstall, resolving conflicting assignments, or deploying a prior manually packaged version. Make one change at a time and confirm the endpoint’s actual state.

The catalog is not a guarantee that an app is suitable for your environment: Microsoft leaves customers responsible for evaluating app content and governance. Choose it for reduced packaging overhead, not as a substitute for version approval, compatibility testing, or release control. If the catalog package does not meet your configuration or lifecycle requirements, the manual Win32 approach offers more control at the cost of packaging and maintenance work.
