You can usually remove C:Windows.old safely after the current Windows installation works and you no longer need the Go back recovery option. Do not delete C:Windows: that is the live operating-system folder. Removing the previous installation also removes the files required to roll back, so recover any files you still need first.
Microsoft normally keeps rollback files for about 10 days after an upgrade, although the exact retention can vary. Windows may remove them automatically after that period. See Microsoft’s explanation of the previous installation and rollback limits at Microsoft Support.
Check these things before deleting Windows.old
- The new installation boots normally.
- Important applications, drivers, printers, peripherals and files work.
- You do not expect to use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back.
- You have copied important data from the old profile and made a backup.
- The target is exactly
C:Windows.old, notC:Windowsor an unreviewed folder on another drive.
Inspect these locations before cleanup:
C:Windows.oldUsers<old username>DesktopC:Windows.oldUsers<old username>DocumentsC:Windows.oldUsers<old username>DownloadsC:Windows.oldUsers<old username>Pictures
Also check application-specific data, exported browser data and game saves. Copy anything valuable elsewhere; programs generally must be reinstalled rather than copied from the old installation. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends backing up important data before recovery operations: Recovery options in Windows.
Windows 11: remove it with Cleanup recommendations
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations.
- Under the cleanup categories, select Previous Windows installation(s).
- Select Clean up (the button displays the estimated size).
- Confirm the deletion if prompted. Restart if Windows requests it, then check available space.
Labels can vary slightly by Windows 11 build or display language. This is the supported approach described in Microsoft’s storage guidance: Free up drive space in Windows.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Windows 10: use Temporary files or Storage Sense
Temporary files path
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files and wait for the scan to finish.
- Check Previous version of Windows.
- Select Remove files and confirm.
Storage Sense variation on older builds
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Under Storage Sense, select Change how we free up space automatically.
- Under Free up space now, choose Delete previous version of Windows.
- Select Clean now.
Windows 10 no longer receives free security updates or technical assistance from Microsoft as of October 14, 2025. The cleanup procedure can still work on existing installations. See the version-dependent instructions at Microsoft Support.
Disk Cleanup works on either version
- Press the Windows key, search for Disk Cleanup, and open it.
- Select the Windows system drive, usually
C:. - Select Clean up system files.
- Select the system drive again if prompted and wait for the scan.
- Check Previous Windows installation(s), Previous Windows version, or similar wording.
- Review other selected categories, then select OK > Delete Files.
The previous-installation entry may not appear until you choose Clean up system files. Microsoft lists Disk Cleanup as an alternative storage tool at Free up drive space in Windows.

If Windows.old is missing from the list
- Windows may already have removed it after the rollback-retention period.
- The folder may be hidden; check the exact path
C:Windows.oldin File Explorer. - The upgrade may not have created a Windows.old directory.
- The cleanup item may use a different label or appear only after Clean up system files.
- The old installation may be on another drive.
Do not substitute similarly named folders such as C:$Windows.~BT without understanding their setup or recovery purpose.
When deletion reports “Access denied”
Try the supported fixes first
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Run Disk Cleanup as administrator.
- Restart Windows and retry.
- Use the Settings cleanup entry instead of deleting through File Explorer.
- Finish pending updates and restarts.
Last-resort ownership commands
Only use these after verifying that C:Windows.old is an obsolete installation. Never replace the path with C:Windows. These commands take ownership, change permissions and recursively delete files:

takeown /F C:Windows.old /R /D Y
icacls C:Windows.old /grant administrators:F /T
rd /S /Q C:Windows.old
Microsoft explains the limitations of takeown at Microsoft Learn; ownership may still need explicit permissions, as shown by icacls documentation. The final rd command is irreversible through normal rollback.
Fallback from Windows Recovery Environment
If normal Windows cannot remove a confirmed obsolete folder:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Identify the Windows partition; WinRE can assign it a letter other than
C:. - Confirm the folder exists on that partition.
- Run
rd /s X:Windows.old, replacingX:only with the verified drive letter.
This drive-letter warning and fallback are illustrated in Microsoft Q&A: Windows.old deletion example.
When the old Windows folder is on another drive
A folder such as D:Windows is not automatically the same as C:Windows.old. Confirm which disk contains the active boot and system partitions in Disk Management, and inspect the old disk for files you need. Never delete a Windows directory on a disk still used to boot the computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the entire secondary disk is genuinely obsolete, back up its contents and consider formatting the verified volume. Formatting is cleaner than recursively changing permissions, but selecting the wrong volume erases everything on it.
Quick Recap
What not to delete
C:Windows, the active operating-system directory.C:Program FilesorC:Users.- Arbitrary folders beginning with
$Windows. - A secondary disk before confirming its boot role and contents.
After cleanup
- Check free space in Settings > System > Storage.
- Restart if Windows requested it.
- If low storage blocked updates, retry Windows Update.
- Use Cleanup recommendations, Storage, or Disk Cleanup to identify other large categories; deleting Windows.old does not guarantee a particular amount of recovered space.
