To delete an Instagram conversation, open Messages, find the chat, open its options, choose Delete or Delete Chat, and confirm. This removes the conversation from your inbox only; other participants keep their copies. To remove a message you sent from the chat, use Unsend on that message instead.
Delete a conversation in the Instagram app
- Open Instagram and tap Messages.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Open the chat’s options. Depending on your device and app version, you may be able to swipe left on the chat on iPhone, press and hold it on Android, or open the conversation and tap its information or options control.
- Choose Delete or Delete Chat, then confirm.
Instagram changes its controls and tests different layouts, so a swipe or press-and-hold gesture may not appear on every account. If it does not work, open the chat and look for its options menu. The chat should disappear from your inbox; deletion does not remove other participants’ copies. Instagram’s help page documents the deletion effect and command.
Delete a conversation on a computer
- Sign in to Instagram and select Messages.
- Open the conversation.
- Select the chat’s information or options control.
- Choose Delete Chat, then select Delete to confirm.
This also removes the chat from your inbox only, not from the inboxes of the other participants.

No. Delete Chat removes the conversation only from the account performing the deletion. The other participants retain their copies. Deleting a conversation is not a way to erase messages from someone else’s inbox.

Unsend one of your messages
If you want to remove a message you sent from the chat for its participants, unsend that message instead. Open the conversation, open the message’s options, and select Unsend. Repeat for each message you want to retract; there is no whole-chat erase-for-everyone action described in Instagram’s instructions.
Instagram says an unsent message is no longer visible to people in the chat, but a recipient may already have read it, seen a notification, copied it, or captured it. Instagram’s Unsend guidance explains the feature and its limits.

Choose the right action

Deleting a chat does not prevent future contact or erase screenshots, copied text, downloaded media, or notifications already seen. Blocking and deleting are separate actions; blocking should not be treated as a way to erase either person’s chat history.

Instagram’s official delete-chat instructions do not provide a normal restore option, so assume the chat may be gone from your inbox. Meta’s Recently Deleted documentation covers some deleted account content, but it does not establish that a deleted DM conversation can be restored. Its retention periods should not be applied to chats.

A data download is not a guaranteed recovery method: Instagram says files do not include messages deleted from your account, and unsent messages are also excluded. If the other participant still has the conversation, you can ask them for information they are willing to share. Avoid third-party recovery services or tools that ask for your login details, session cookies, or payment.

Message requests
Requests can have different controls from established conversations, and the available options depend on the request and your messaging settings. You may see options such as Delete, Decline, Block, or Report. Use Delete for inbox cleanup, Block to prevent normal contact, and Report for suspicious or abusive activity. Instagram explains how messaging and requests are handled in its messaging guidance.

Group conversations
Deleting a group chat removes it from your view; it does not remove the group conversation from everyone else’s inbox. If you want to stop participating, look for a separate Leave Chat or group-management option. Deleting the chat alone should not be treated as leaving. You can unsend individual messages you sent, or report harmful content, as separate actions.
If the Delete option is missing
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store, then reopen the app.
- Open the conversation and check its information or options menu instead of relying on an inbox gesture.
- Check whether it is a message request or group conversation, where available controls may differ.
- Try Instagram on the web to see whether the issue is limited to the app.
- If the control still appears to be malfunctioning, use Instagram’s in-app Report a problem option.
These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that a particular control will appear. Do not give login details to support accounts or recovery services you find through search or direct messages.
If the conversation involves abuse or a scam
Consider saving relevant evidence before deleting or unsending messages, especially if you may need to document threats, harassment, or fraud. Use Report for potential violations, and use Restrict or Block if you need to limit contact. Deleting the chat alone is only inbox cleanup.
Older encrypted chats
Instagram says some affected older end-to-end encrypted chats may be unavailable after June 23, 2025; users affected may see instructions in the chat to download messages or media they want to keep. This applies to those impacted encrypted chats, not as a general rule for deleting conversations. See Instagram’s encryption help page for details.
