To request a modified image through a URL, add the transformation parameters supported by the image-delivery service to the URL that identifies the source image. The exact syntax depends on the provider: Cloudinary and ImageKit, for example, express transformations differently. Use the service’s documented URL format or its SDK rather than combining parameter styles from different providers.
What an image transformation URL does
A transformation URL tells an image service two things: which image to deliver and what variant to return. A variant might be resized, cropped, or converted to another format. The service interprets the parameters in the URL according to its own rules; a parameter that works with one provider may be meaningless or invalid with another.
That makes a transformation URL more than a source-image address with arbitrary query parameters added. Its path or query string is part of the provider’s API. Before constructing one, identify where the original image is hosted, which delivery service serves it, and which operations that service supports.
How to build a transformation URL
- Start with the image’s delivery URL. Use the URL provided by the image service, not a guessed URL based only on the source file’s location.
- Choose the operation. Decide whether you need a width, height, crop, format conversion, or another supported change.
- Look up the provider’s exact parameter names and values. The URL API reference defines the supported actions and qualifiers; do not assume common-sounding names are interchangeable.
- Place the transformation where that provider requires it. Services differ in whether the transformation appears in a path component or another part of the URL, and in how multiple operations are separated.
- Request the resulting URL and inspect the returned image. Confirm that dimensions, crop, and output format meet the intended use. If your application generates many URLs, use the provider’s SDK when it helps avoid string-construction mistakes.
For multiple operations, ordering may matter. Follow the service’s documented chaining rules instead of assuming that resizing, cropping, and formatting can be rearranged freely.

Cloudinary URL structure and syntax
Cloudinary documents a delivery URL in this general form:
https://res.cloudinary.com/<cloud_name>/<asset_type>/<delivery_type>/<transformations>/<version>/<public_id_full_path>.<extension>
The components identify the Cloudinary account, asset type, delivery method, optional transformations, optional asset version, image’s public ID and optional file extension. The angle-bracketed terms describe components to obtain from the actual account and asset; they are not literal values to paste into a working URL.
Within a Cloudinary transformation component, parameters are comma-separated. Chained transformation components are separated by slashes. For example, Cloudinary’s guide demonstrates the sequence c_thumb,g_face,h_200,w_200, then r_max, then f_auto: a face-focused square thumbnail, rounded into a circle, with automatic output format. In a delivery URL, those components are separated by slashes. This is Cloudinary syntax, not a general image-URL convention.

Cloudinary describes derived images as being generated when a transformation URL is first requested and cached for subsequent requests. Its documentation also says account usage limits depend on the plan. For a production integration, check the current account’s limits and rules rather than assuming that every transformation or delivery is unlimited.

ImageKit uses a different transformation format
ImageKit’s documentation shows a transformation component such as tr:w-300,h-300 after the image endpoint and before the image path. Its simpler resize example uses tr:w-200. These examples show the provider’s URL style; they do not make tr: a shared standard.
Do not copy Cloudinary’s comma-and-slash chaining grammar into an ImageKit URL, or move ImageKit’s tr: component into a Cloudinary URL. If a URL must work across providers, generate it separately for each service using that provider’s rules.

How to choose between a manual URL and an SDK
Build a URL manually to learn or inspect the format
A literal URL makes the relationship between the source image and its requested variant easy to see. It is useful for understanding the provider’s syntax and testing a specific transformation. Keep the provider’s reference open while composing it, especially when a URL contains several operations.
Use an SDK when application code generates URLs
Cloudinary documents SDK helpers that generate transformation URLs and image tags. Helper names and code syntax can differ from the URL API’s literal parameter syntax, so treat SDK examples as code, not as URL components to paste into a path. The SDK can reduce hand-built string mistakes; it does not remove the need to choose supported transformations or understand the resulting delivery URL.
For ImageKit and other providers, check the relevant SDK documentation if you want a code-generated URL. The documented URL examples establish provider-specific syntax, but do not establish that every provider offers identical helpers or operations.

Compare the services by the job your application needs
| Service | What the documented material establishes | What to verify for your use |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudinary | Transformation URL structure, comma-separated parameters, slash-separated chained components, SDK URL generation, and on-demand derivation with caching. | Supported parameters and current plan-dependent usage limits for your account. |
| ImageKit | URL-based transformations, including documented tr: resize examples placed between the endpoint and image path. |
Its complete operation syntax and any account limits relevant to your deployment. |
| Imgix | Its official documentation identifies a Rendering API and URL syntax information. | Consult its parameter reference for exact transformation names and usage details before building a URL. |

Common problems and how to diagnose them
- The service does not recognize the transformation. Check that you are using that provider’s parameter names, separators, and placement. Do not mix grammars across services.
- The image is not the expected size or crop. Recheck the width, height, crop mode, and any focus or gravity setting against the provider’s reference. In chained transformations, verify the documented sequence as well as the individual values.
- The result is not in the expected format. Confirm that the provider supports the requested format behavior and that the format-related parameter is valid in that provider’s syntax. Do not treat a file extension alone as proof that a transformation was applied.
- A URL template returns no usable image. Replace explanatory components such as account, endpoint, asset path, or version with the exact values from the service and asset. A documented URL pattern is a template, not a complete address for your account.
- A generated URL differs from a hand-written example. SDK helpers may format a URL differently from the way you expected. Compare the generated result with that provider’s URL API reference; SDK method syntax is not necessarily the literal URL syntax.
- Changes appear not to take effect after the first request. Check whether the URL actually changed and how the provider handles derived-image caching. Cloudinary documents that a derived asset is cached after its first request; do not assume cache behavior is identical across services.
- Production use reaches a usage limit. Check the current plan and account usage documentation. Cloudinary states that usage limits depend on the account plan; the material available here does not establish specific limits for every provider or plan.
Performance, caching, and cost considerations
On-demand image transformation means the delivery service can create a requested variant when its URL is requested rather than requiring you to manually store every version beforehand. Cloudinary documents that the derived asset is created on first access and cached for later requests. That can make repeat requests behave differently from the first request, but does not establish a particular generation time or guarantee the same cache policy for other providers.
Also treat each materially different transformation URL as a request for a potentially different variant, subject to the provider’s behavior and account settings. If your application creates many combinations of width, crop, or format, keep the set of variants purposeful and monitor the account’s usage. No universal transformation cost or plan allowance can be inferred from URL syntax alone.

When a screenshot API is the right tool instead
An image transformation URL modifies an image asset served by an image service. It does not, by itself, render a web page into an image. If what you have is a webpage and you need a screenshot of its rendered appearance, use a browser or screenshot service instead. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is an alternative for capturing webpages, not a replacement for Cloudinary or ImageKit transformation syntax.
Or skip the browser setup
For a webpage capture rather than an existing-image transformation, one GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
