If LinkedIn shows an old, missing, or incorrect link card, fix the Open Graph tags in the page’s initial HTML, make sure the image URL is publicly reachable, then refresh the URL in LinkedIn Post Inspector and test a new post. Post Inspector refreshes previews for future posts; it does not rewrite cards already published.
This guide gives you a repeatable way to identify whether the fault is in your metadata, image delivery, server-rendered HTML, or LinkedIn’s stored preview.
What LinkedIn reads from your page
Open Graph metadata lives in the document’s <head>. The Open Graph Protocol defines four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. og:description is optional in the protocol but is generally recommended for a useful card.
A minimal article head might look like this:
<meta property="og:title" content="How to Debug LinkedIn Open Graph Previews">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/linkedin-preview.png">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/linkedin-open-graph-debugging">
<meta property="og:description" content="A practical guide to fixing LinkedIn link cards.">
Use the canonical URL you actually want people to share in og:url, and make the image URL complete rather than relative. The protocol explains the metadata model; it does not define every LinkedIn-specific preview rule.

-
Inspect the original HTML response
Open the page, choose View Source (not only the live DOM inspector), and search for
og:title,og:type,og:image,og:url, andog:description. Confirm that the values describe the intended page and that each property appears in the document head. You can also fetch the response from a terminal:curl -L https://example.com/linkedin-open-graph-debugging | grep -i "og:"Replace the URL with your page. The command is a quick inspection aid; check the complete HTML if output is truncated or generated unusually.
-
Check the image URL independently
Copy the exact value of
og:imageand open it in a private browser window, without being logged in to your site. It should return the intended image rather than a login page, an error document, a redirect to a protected area, or a different asset. A third-party troubleshooting guide recommends this test when an image is missing or wrong; it is a practical check, not a LinkedIn-documented image requirement.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Compare source HTML with the browser DOM
If developer tools show Open Graph tags but View Source does not, your application may be adding them after page load. A third-party guide recommends placing the tags in the server response. LinkedIn’s Help article does not document whether its crawler executes your page’s JavaScript, so treat server-rendered metadata as the safer troubleshooting choice rather than an established crawler guarantee.
-
Refresh the URL in LinkedIn Post Inspector
LinkedIn’s official Help instructions tell you to enter the URL in Post Inspector and confirm the resulting preview. Paste the exact URL you plan to share, including its path and query-string choices, then compare the title, description, and image with your source HTML. If the Inspector still shows the previous values, recheck the response and image URL before changing unrelated page code.
-
Compose a new post
When Post Inspector displays the corrected card, create a new LinkedIn post containing that URL and review the preview before publishing. LinkedIn states that the changes affect new posts only; previews on existing posts remain unchanged. Do not use an old post as the success test.

ScreenshotNeo can capture your page with one HTTP request, which is useful when you need a repeatable visual check of a page, a particular element, or many URLs. Its API can wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; load lazy images for full-page captures; set a viewport or device preset; and apply custom CSS or JavaScript before the shot. You can also supply headers, cookies, an Authorization value, timezone, or geolocation when your test page needs them.
Read the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. These runnable examples target a placeholder article URL; replace it with the page whose Open Graph implementation you are debugging.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/article"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/article' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Diagnose the symptom in the right order
| What you see | First checks | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| Old title or description | Read og:title and og:description in the initial HTML; run Post Inspector. |
Publish the corrected tags, refresh in Post Inspector, and test a new post. |
| Wrong or missing image | Verify og:image, then open its full URL privately. |
Use the intended, publicly reachable asset and correct the metadata URL. |
| Tags visible only in developer tools | Compare the live DOM with View Source or the raw HTTP response. | Emit the tags in the server response instead of relying only on client-side code. |
| Inspector still shows an earlier card | Confirm the current response and image, then submit the exact URL again. | Allow the refresh to complete and verify with a new post; old cards are not rewritten. |
| Card content belongs to another page | Compare og:url with the URL you pasted and inspect redirects. |
Set the canonical Open Graph URL and share that URL consistently. |
This ordering is a practical synthesis of the protocol and the troubleshooting guidance, not a formal LinkedIn ranking of causes.

Keep every value internally consistent
The title in og:title, the description in og:description, the image in og:image, and the canonical address in og:url should describe the same page. Do not leave a staging URL, an old campaign path, or an unrelated image in one field while updating the others.
Use an image URL that works outside your session
An image that loads only after authentication or through a private network cannot be a dependable preview asset. Test the exact URL in a private window and inspect the response visually. If your server redirects image requests to a login route or returns an error page, change access rules or host the intended asset at a reachable URL.
Serve metadata early
Frameworks that populate head tags after hydration can produce a mismatch between what a browser eventually displays and what a remote fetch receives. Put the Open Graph elements in the HTML response generated for the route, then verify with View Source after deployment. This recommendation comes from third-party troubleshooting guidance; LinkedIn has not published a definitive statement about JavaScript execution in the reviewed Help article.
Change one variable at a time
When debugging, first correct the source tags, then verify the image, then refresh Post Inspector. Changing the URL, template, image file, and redirect rules simultaneously makes it difficult to identify which change solved the issue.
LinkedIn preview limits you should not guess
The reviewed sources do not establish a universal LinkedIn image width, height, file-size, or format limit. They also do not provide a precise cache lifetime or a guaranteed crawler user agent. Avoid “fixes” based on unverified numeric limits. Start with valid Open Graph properties, a reachable image, server-delivered metadata, and Post Inspector verification.

Post Inspector shows no useful preview
Return to the raw response and confirm all four required properties are present. Then open the image URL separately. If either the page response or the image is protected, malformed, or redirected unexpectedly, fix that first and submit the URL again.

The title is correct but the image is not
Inspect only the og:image value and its destination. Check for a typo, a relative path, an outdated filename, or an image response that differs from what you expect. Do not assume that changing the title will force a different image.
The browser shows the new metadata but LinkedIn shows the old metadata
Use View Source or a raw HTTP fetch to ensure the new values are in the initial response. If they are, run the URL through Post Inspector again and wait for its displayed result before testing a new post. Existing cards will still retain their earlier content.

A redesign changed the URL
Decide which address is canonical, set that address in og:url, and use it in the LinkedIn post. Check redirects so the shared URL and the metadata URL do not describe different pages.
You need to check many pages
Automate retrieval of each page’s initial HTML and image URL, or use ScreenshotNeo’s bulk capture option for up to 100 URLs per call. Its caching TTL is configurable, and async jobs can notify your system through signed webhooks. Those features help you inspect a release repeatedly; they do not replace Post Inspector when you need to see LinkedIn’s stored card.
Operational checks for teams
- Keep a fixture page with known-good Open Graph values and an image URL that is publicly reachable.
- After deployments, compare the raw HTML for representative routes, not only the hydrated browser DOM.
- Record the exact URL submitted to Post Inspector, including redirects and query parameters.
- Capture a screenshot of the page or card before and after a metadata change so reviewers can see the result.
- When testing protected environments, provide the required cookies or headers to your capture tool rather than making production assets public.
ScreenshotNeo plans for recurring checks

| Pro | 60,000 | $39 |
| Scale | 250,000 | $99 |
| Business | 1,000,000 | $249 |
Every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing provides two months free. ScreenshotNeo returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and reports whether a response was billed, so failed loads and bot checks do not silently consume your allowance.
The Bottom Line
Start with the initial HTML and the exact image URL, refresh the URL in Post Inspector, and judge the fix on a new LinkedIn post. That sequence separates page-side metadata errors from stale preview data without relying on undocumented image limits or crawler behavior.
