The right way to customize WordPress depends on the theme you activated. A block theme is edited from Appearance > Editor, where you can change styles, templates, template parts, and patterns. A classic theme may instead provide its controls under Appearance > Customize. For code-level changes that go beyond those controls, consider a child theme rather than modifying the parent theme directly.
Identify your theme’s editing workflow
Start in the WordPress dashboard and check which editing screen your active theme supports. The theme type determines both the entry point and the scope of changes you can make.

WordPress.org states that “The Site Editor is only available when you install and activate a Block theme on your site.” If you do not see Appearance > Editor, that usually means your active theme is not a block theme or does not support that workflow.

Customize a block theme with the Site Editor
Change site-wide appearance with Styles
- Open Appearance > Editor in the dashboard.
- Open Styles and choose the settings exposed by the theme.
- Adjust broad properties such as colors, typography, layout, and the appearance of supported blocks.
- Preview the result at different screen sizes and on representative pages before saving.
Styles are the appropriate place for a site-wide visual direction. A style change can affect many blocks and pages, so use it for decisions such as the main color palette, default text treatment, and general spacing rather than for a one-off page exception.

Edit page structures with Templates
Templates define the structure used by content types and views. In the Site Editor, open Templates and select the template you need, such as a page, post, archive, or search layout when those templates are provided by the theme. You can edit the arrangement of blocks, add or remove sections, and change how content is presented.
A template edit is structural, not limited to the page currently open in your browser. Before saving, confirm which template you are editing and review the affected content types.

Update shared areas with Template Parts
Template parts are reusable areas such as headers and footers. Open the relevant template part from the Site Editor, make the change, and inspect the Save panel before confirming it. Because the same part can be used in multiple templates, a header or footer edit may change every page that uses that part.
Use patterns for repeatable sections
Block themes can also expose patterns: groups of blocks designed for reuse, such as a call-to-action section or a feature area. Manage available patterns in the Site Editor when the theme supports that interface. Treat a reusable pattern as shared design material and check whether editing it changes existing uses or only future insertions, based on the options WordPress presents.

Customize a classic theme with the Customizer
- Go to Appearance > Customize.
- Use the sections and controls supplied by the active theme.
- Preview changes in the Customizer as you work.
- Publish only after checking key pages and responsive views.
Classic themes are built around PHP templates and may include theme-specific settings. One theme may offer controls for colors, menus, widgets, a header, or layout while another exposes different options or none of these. Do not assume that a control documented for one classic theme exists in another.
Block themes generally rely on the Site Editor instead, so the Customizer may be hidden when a block theme is active. Switching screens will not create controls that the theme was not designed to provide.

When a child theme is the right choice
Use built-in controls first for ordinary visual adjustments. If they cannot produce the change you need and you are comfortable editing theme files, WordPress advises considering a child theme for personal code-level customization of the current theme.
- Use a child theme for changes to PHP templates, CSS, JavaScript, or theme behavior that the normal editor does not expose.
- Keep the parent theme as the source of the original design while placing your overrides in the child theme.
- Expect to work with WordPress functions, hooks, and filters when extending theme behavior.
- Test the child theme after parent-theme updates and after WordPress updates.
A child theme is not required for every color, font, spacing, or layout adjustment. It is a safer code-customization route when the theme’s supported interface is insufficient.

Preview and save safely
- Make one related group of changes at a time.
- Use the available preview to inspect the front page, a post, a page, navigation, and any archive or search view that matters to your site.
- Open the Save action and read the list of changes WordPress is about to apply.
- Pay particular attention to shared headers, footers, templates, and template parts.
- Save only when the scope is expected, then recheck the live views.
The Save list matters because a change made while viewing one page can apply to every page that uses the edited template or shared part. A preview that looks correct in one location is not proof that other templates are unaffected.
What to do when the theme cannot deliver the design
Preview replacement themes before activation
Use the theme preview workflow before activating a different theme. Compare the candidate’s design with your content and check whether its editing model is a block theme or a classic theme.
Compare the workflow, not just the screenshot
- Which editor is available: Site Editor, Customizer, or both?
- Which global styles, templates, template parts, and patterns are exposed?
- Can the theme represent your navigation, headers, footers, archives, and page layouts?
- Does its design fit your content and required functionality?
- Does the preview render your existing content sensibly?
A blank or incomplete preview is a reason to investigate before activation, not a reason to activate blindly. A theme change affects the site’s presentation, so confirm that the replacement supports the pages and structures your site actually uses.

A practical decision guide
- Need colors, typography, or broad spacing on a block theme? Start with Appearance > Editor > Styles.
- Need to rearrange a page, archive, header, or footer on a block theme? Edit the relevant template or template part in the Site Editor.
- Using a classic theme? Open Appearance > Customize and work only with the controls that theme provides.
- Need a change the interface cannot expose? Consider a child theme for code-level work.
- Can the current theme not support the goal? Preview alternatives and compare their editor, templates, styles, and fit before switching.
