The right way to customize a WordPress header depends on your active theme. With a block theme, use Appearance > Editor to edit the Header template part. With a classic theme, check Appearance > Customize and the theme’s own menu or header settings. The controls—and which parts of the header you can change—vary by theme.

Which WordPress header editor should you use?

Start by checking the active theme and whether Appearance > Editor is available. Block themes use the Site Editor to arrange site areas with blocks. Classic themes generally rely on theme templates and whatever Customizer, menu, or widget controls the theme provides. WordPress describes the Site Editor as allowing you to design the entire site, including the header and footer, with blocks. WordPress’s block-theme guide explains the distinction between the two theme types.

Route Where to start Useful for Important limitation
Block theme Appearance > Editor > Header template part Visually rearranging header blocks, site identity, and navigation A shared template-part change can affect every template that uses it.
Classic theme Appearance > Customize, or the theme’s own header, identity, menu, or color controls Changing the options the theme exposes Available settings depend on theme support; there may be no header-image control.
Developer code change Theme implementation, often header.php in a classic theme Custom behavior that the visual controls do not provide Requires development and an update-safe implementation.

How do you customize a header in a block theme?

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Appearance > Editor.
  2. Find the Header template part, typically through Patterns or Template Parts, and open it. The Site Editor documentation describes editing site-wide areas; the Template Part block guide explains reusable template parts.
  3. Select existing blocks or add the ones you need. A header commonly contains a Site Logo or Site Title block and a Navigation block. The exact design and available options depend on the theme.
  4. Make your changes, then preview the result at the relevant screen sizes and pages offered by your editor.
  5. Choose Save and review the items WordPress lists before confirming. The save flow can include more than the header, such as templates, template parts, navigation menus, or synced patterns.

A Header template part is reusable. If several templates include it, changing that part changes the header on those templates—not just the page you happened to be viewing. Check the save list and consider the scope before confirming.

Change the logo, title, or header arrangement

Open the Header template part and select the Site Logo or Site Title block to adjust it, or reposition blocks to change their arrangement. Theme design determines the starting layout and styling controls available. Preview the actual pages that use the header, since a shared part may appear in multiple contexts.

Add or change the navigation menu

A menu that exists in WordPress does not necessarily appear in the header. The Header template part must contain a Navigation block, and that block must be connected to the menu you want to show. Edit or select menu items in the Navigation block’s controls, preview the header, and save. See WordPress’s Site Editor navigation guide for the block’s menu-editing workflow.

How do you customize a header in a classic theme?

  1. Confirm that the classic theme is active. If Appearance > Editor is not available, check the theme rather than assuming WordPress is missing a setting.
  2. Open Appearance > Customize, if present, and look for controls such as Site Identity, Header Image, Colors, or Menus. Some themes provide additional theme-specific settings.
  3. Use the live preview to check the changes, then publish them when they look right.

The Customizer’s panels depend on theme support; WordPress’s Customizer documentation does not imply every theme exposes the same options. In particular, Custom Header support is optional. A theme that supports a header image controls details such as supported width and height, whether dimensions can vary, and whether header text can display. Check your theme’s settings instead of assuming a Header Image panel or a universal image size. The Custom Headers developer guide documents how that support works.

What if the header or menu option is missing?

  • No Appearance > Editor: Check which theme is active. A classic theme may not provide the Site Editor.
  • No Header Image panel: The theme may not support custom headers, or it may expose header settings under another theme-specific panel.
  • A menu exists but is invisible: In a block theme, add a Navigation block to the Header template part and connect it to that menu. In a classic theme, use the theme’s menu controls and available display locations.
  • A change appears on other pages: You likely edited a shared header part. Review which templates use it and decide whether the change should apply across them.

When should you edit theme code?

Use code only when the controls available in the editor or theme do not support the behavior you need. In classic themes, the header is commonly rendered through header.php; WordPress also documents reusable template parts for theme templates. In block themes, template parts are stored in a parts directory. See the Template Files developer handbook for classic-theme structure.

Avoid editing a parent theme’s files directly: WordPress cautions that direct theme-file changes can be lost when the theme is updated. Use an update-safe approach, such as a child theme, and make sure the implementation suits the active theme type. The Customizer documentation also describes the risk of losing direct theme-file edits.
