You can customize a Chromebook’s keyboard, touchpad, connected mouse, and accessibility controls in ChromeOS Settings—no extra software is needed. The exact menu labels vary by device and ChromeOS release, so use Settings search if a path below does not match your screen.
To start, select the time in the lower-right corner, then select Settings. You can also open quick settings with Alt + Shift + S. In Settings, use the search box or press Ctrl + F and search for terms such as keyboard, touchpad, mouse, shortcuts, or accessibility. Depending on your Chromebook, controls may be grouped under names such as Keyboard, Keyboard and inputs, Touchpad and mouse, or Cursor and touchpad. Google’s Settings guidance also notes that labels can differ.
Customize the Chromebook keyboard
Remap supported keys
ChromeOS lets you change what certain physical keys do, but it does not offer unrestricted, any-key-to-any-command remapping. The available keys and actions are set by ChromeOS.
- Open Settings and find Keyboard under Device or Keyboard and inputs.
- Under Built-in keyboard, select Remap keyboard keys or Customize keyboard keys.
- Select a listed key and choose an available action.
Depending on the device, supported keys include modifier keys, Escape, Backspace, and Caps Lock. For example, you can make the Search/Launcher key act as Caps Lock. To undo changes, return to the same panel and select Restore defaults. If the remapping makes navigation awkward, use Settings search or connect another keyboard. Change Search/Launcher, Ctrl, and Alt behavior
The Chromebook’s Search or Launcher key opens search or the app launcher by default. It occupies a role familiar to Windows-key users, and on many external Windows keyboards the Windows key serves as the Chromebook’s Search/Launcher key. ChromeOS also lets you change the behavior of Ctrl, Alt, and Search/Launcher in the keyboard settings.
Ctrl is common in browser and editing shortcuts, while Alt is used in many ChromeOS system shortcuts. If you need Caps Lock before remapping a key, the usual shortcut is Alt + Search/Launcher. External keyboards may label or arrange these keys differently.
Make the top row act as function keys
Chromebook top-row keys usually control actions such as Back, Forward, Reload, full screen, window overview, brightness, and volume. If your apps need standard F1–F12 keys—for example, for development tools, spreadsheets, or terminal work—look in the built-in keyboard settings for an option such as Treat top-row keys as function keys.

External keyboards can have their own controls. Depending on the keyboard and ChromeOS version, you may be able to convert its F keys to ChromeOS top-row actions or use a System/Launcher key to switch behavior. This changes the trade-off: function-key mode makes F-key-dependent apps easier to use, while ChromeOS actions may require an added modifier.
F11 and F12 can be different on compact Chromebook keyboards that have fewer than 12 top-row keys. Google documents special combinations using Back or Refresh and modifier keys; which combinations work depends on the hardware layout and top-row setting. Do not assume the same F11/F12 combination applies to every model. Check the keyboard and external-keyboard settings guide and F11/F12 shortcut details.
Create or change ChromeOS shortcuts
Key remapping changes a physical key’s role; the Shortcuts app changes which key combination performs a ChromeOS action. Open the Shortcuts app, choose a category—such as General, Device, Browser, Text, Windows and desks, or Accessibility—and locate the action. Hover over it, select Edit, then add or change a shortcut. A custom combination can use one to four modifier keys plus one additional key; ChromeOS allows up to five custom shortcuts for each action.

Some shortcuts are locked or cannot be changed. Top-row keys cannot be included in a custom shortcut; use function keys instead. A shortcut can also conflict with a browser, website, Android app, or Linux app. ChromeOS may warn you about a conflict. System shortcuts that include Search/Launcher are less likely to overlap with browser shortcuts. If a combination stops working, open the Shortcuts app, edit or remove the assignment, and restore the original if needed. Customize the touchpad
Search Settings for Touchpad or open Device > Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse. Available controls depend on your Chromebook and connected devices.
Change clicking, dragging, speed, and scrolling
- Tap to click: Tap the pad instead of pressing it. Turn this off if you often click accidentally while typing; turn it on if pressing the pad feels uncomfortable.
- Tap and drag: Double-tap and hold to drag an item. It can make dragging easier without a firm physical click.
- Pointer speed: Adjust how quickly the pointer travels. Try small changes and test them before adjusting again.
- Acceleration: Adjust how pointer movement responds to your finger motion, if the option is available.
- Reverse scrolling: Change which direction content moves when you scroll. Test it immediately; the preferred direction depends on whether you expect content to follow your fingers or a traditional mouse wheel.
These are touchpad controls, not necessarily the same controls shown for a separate mouse. Google’s touchpad guide describes the available settings and gestures.
Choose how to right-click
The standard touchpad method is to press or tap with two fingers. ChromeOS can also offer a keyboard-assisted setting named Use keyboard and touchpad to right-click. Depending on the device and settings, choose Search/Launcher + click, Alt + click, or Off. Find it by searching Settings for right-click.
Choose the modifier that fits your other shortcuts. Alt + click may conflict with Alt-based navigation or app shortcuts; Search/Launcher + click may be preferable if you rely on those functions. Google notes the keyboard-assisted option can be off by default for new users.

Page-navigation swipes can be mistaken for scrolling, and gestures may behave differently in browser, Android, or Linux apps. If page navigation happens accidentally, check touchpad and accessibility settings for relevant gesture controls.
Customize a connected mouse
A USB or Bluetooth mouse has separate settings in some ChromeOS versions. Search Settings for Mouse to find controls such as pointer speed, primary-button swapping, and Controlled scrolling, which turns scroll acceleration on or off and may expose a scroll-speed control.
For supported devices, open Device settings > Mouse > Customize mouse buttons. You can swap left and right buttons, then select an additional mouse button and assign an available action, key, or keyboard shortcut. These controls customize the external mouse; they do not remap the built-in touchpad surface. External keyboards likewise have their own settings, especially for function-row behavior.
Disable or re-enable the built-in touchpad
If you use a mouse or want to prevent accidental palm touches while typing, search Settings for Disable built-in touchpad. The control is under Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad on supported Chromebooks. Choose Never, Always, or When a mouse is connected. ChromeOS asks you to confirm an Always setting; if you do not confirm within 30 seconds, it returns to the default.
If the pad is disabled and you need it again, press Shift five times. This is especially important if you do not have a working mouse or touchscreen. See Google’s instructions for disabling and restoring the touchpad.

- Sticky Keys: Press modifier keys one at a time instead of holding them together. Pressing a modifier twice keeps it active until the shortcut is completed; pressing it a third time releases it.
- Slow Keys and Bounce Keys: Help reduce unintended or repeated keystrokes. Settings and availability can vary.
- Automatic clicking: Click by pausing the pointer, where supported.
- Cursor controls: Increase cursor size, change its color, or highlight the cursor. Keyboard-focus and text-cursor highlighting can also help with visibility.
- Alternative input: Explore dictation, caret browsing, or Switch Access if standard keyboard and pointer use is difficult.
On a touchscreen or convertible Chromebook, enable On-screen keyboard in Settings > Accessibility, under Keyboard and text input. The keyboard may offer docking or floating, moving and resizing, handwriting, voice typing, and glide typing. You may also be able to adjust keypress sounds, autocorrection, capitalization, and double-space punctuation. On supported convertibles, it can appear automatically in tablet mode. A setting is missing or has a different name
Search Settings for the control’s name instead of relying on one menu path. Built-in and external devices may show different controls, and a school- or work-managed Chromebook may restrict settings. Features such as tablet mode, F11/F12 combinations, and some gestures also depend on the hardware and configuration.
A key remap is confusing
Return to the remapping panel and select Restore defaults. Use an external keyboard or Settings search if the remapped key makes it hard to navigate.
A custom shortcut conflicts or no longer works
Open the Shortcuts app, find the action in its category, and edit or remove the custom combination. Try a different combination, preferably one including Search/Launcher for a system action. A shortcut can behave differently inside browser pages and Android or Linux apps.
The touchpad stops responding
First check whether it was disabled in Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad; press Shift five times to re-enable it. If it is enabled but unresponsive, clean away dust or debris, press Esc several times, drum your fingers on the pad for about 10 seconds, and restart the Chromebook. Google also recommends a hard reset where appropriate; if the problem persists, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Its touchpad troubleshooting guide has the recovery steps.
Choose settings that fit how you use the Chromebook
- Switching from a traditional laptop: Try function-key mode if your work depends on F keys, decide deliberately what Search/Launcher should do, and choose a right-click modifier that does not clash with familiar shortcuts.
- Typing without accidental pointer movement: Turn off tap-to-click, or set the touchpad to disable when a mouse is connected. Remember Shift-five-times recovery before disabling it.
- Reducing input strain: Try Sticky Keys, Slow Keys or Bounce Keys, automatic clicking, cursor highlighting, or the on-screen keyboard. Change one setting at a time so it is easy to tell what helps.
- Using an external setup: Configure the keyboard and mouse separately. Specialized macro, media, or vendor-specific keys may not have ChromeOS controls.
Settings availability and wording vary across ChromeOS releases, hardware, device modes, and managed accounts. If a feature is not listed, it may not be supported on that Chromebook or may be controlled by an administrator.
