How to Customize Android’s “Power Off” Menu With More Options

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Android usually will not let you replace the built-in Power off, Restart, Emergency, or Lockdown buttons. You can, however, change what the power button does, add smart-home controls where your phone supports them, use Quick Settings for app-provided shortcuts, and expose custom automations through Tasker on compatible Android 11-and-newer devices.

The result depends on your Android version, phone manufacturer, One UI or other system skin, and current System UI. “Power off menu” can mean the shutdown screen, Android’s Device Controls surface, Quick Settings, or the power-button gesture; these are related but not interchangeable.

Identify which “power menu” you mean

The shutdown screen is the protected interface containing actions such as Power off, Restart, Emergency, and sometimes Lockdown or medical information. Ordinary settings generally do not let you rename, remove, reorder, or replace those commands.

Android also has several nearby control surfaces:

  • Device Controls: a framework for smart-home and automation controls. Android 11 introduced the framework and its ControlsProviderService for compatible apps: Android Developers documentation.
  • Quick Settings: the swipe-down tile panel, which is now the main location for many controls on newer Pixel software.
  • Power-button gestures: press-and-hold and double-press actions that may open the shutdown screen, an assistant, the camera, or another shortcut.

Older Android 11 guides often show Device Controls inside the long-press power screen. Google’s Android 12-era Pixel redesign moved Wallet and device controls to Quick Settings and the lock screen, so those screenshots are not a reliable guide to current Pixel phones: Google Pixel Community explanation.

Restore the normal Power menu to the button

If holding the button opens Google Assistant, Gemini, Bixby, or another assistant, change the press-and-hold assignment first. This restores access to the shutdown screen but does not add new buttons to it.

Pixel and stock-like Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System, then Gestures.
  3. Tap Press and hold power button.
  4. Select Power menu instead of the assistant.

On some Pixel builds, holding Power + Volume Up opens the power menu when the hold gesture is assigned to an assistant. Labels and availability can vary by Pixel generation and software build. See Google’s guidance: Pixel support discussion.

Motorola

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Gestures, or open Power key on models that use that label.
  3. Choose Press and hold (or Press & hold).
  4. Select Power menu.

Motorola says the exact path varies by model. If another function owns the hold gesture, Power + Volume Up can open the menu on supported devices: Motorola gesture instructions and Motorola power-key guidance.

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung’s side-key behavior differs by model, One UI version, and carrier software. In Settings, search for Side button, Power menu, or Press and hold. If the side key is assigned to Bixby or another assistant, change the press-and-hold action back to the power menu. Samsung does not use the same implementation as stock Android, so a Pixel path should not be applied word for word.

Other manufacturers

Search Settings for power button, power key, side key, or assistant. Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and other brands may provide a gesture setting, a separate power-menu screen, or no equivalent option. A managed work or school phone may also restrict these changes.

Add smart-home controls

On compatible Android 11-and-newer phones, a control provider can publish buttons for supported devices. Google documents controls for lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, plugs, vacuums, TVs, and speakers: Pixel smart-device controls.

  1. Install or enable a supported provider such as Google Home.
  2. Add and connect your smart-home devices in that provider.
  3. Mark the devices you want quick access to as favorites when the provider offers that option.
  4. Open your phone’s Device controls, Home, or Quick Settings surface.
  5. Use its edit or reorder controls to choose which devices appear.

On current Pixel software, these controls are commonly reached from Quick Settings or a lock-screen Home-controls shortcut rather than from the long-press shutdown screen. A device can be visible in Google Home yet absent from the system panel if it is unsupported, disconnected, or not selected as a favorite.

Use Quick Settings as the modern shortcut panel

Quick Settings is usually the most dependable place to put a shortcut supplied by Android or an installed app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap the Edit pencil.
  3. Add available tiles, remove unwanted ones, or drag tiles into a new order.
  4. Look for tiles supplied by your automation, smart-home, accessibility, or media apps.

Android’s instructions cover adding, removing, and reordering tiles: Android Help. This does not place a button beside Power off, but it avoids the version and manufacturer differences that affect the old power-menu controls. On Android 15 and newer, some accessibility services can also provide Quick Settings tiles: Google Accessibility Help.

Add custom actions with Tasker

Tasker’s official Power Menu Action supports Android 11 and later. It can expose a Tasker-triggered control, app launcher, or automation in the control surface that the phone makes available. It does not turn the phone on or off and does not necessarily insert a button into the protected shutdown row: Tasker Power Menu Action documentation.

Basic setup

  1. Install Tasker from its official distribution channel: tasker.joaoapps.com.
  2. Create and test the Task you want to run, such as launching an app, toggling a scene, starting navigation, or changing a work routine.
  3. Add Tasker’s Power Menu Action to that Task.
  4. Configure the label, icon, command, or dynamic launcher options offered by your current Tasker release.
  5. Open the phone’s power-menu or Device Controls management screen and choose Add controls, Device controls, or the equivalent OEM option.
  6. Select the Tasker controls, then reorder or remove them if the system allows it.
  7. Test the control while unlocked and, where appropriate, while the phone is locked.

Tasker also documents a Power Menu Shown event that can detect when the menu appears and expose the available Add-controls flow: Tasker event documentation.

Useful Tasker examples

  • Launch Spotify, a password manager, or another frequently used app.
  • Trigger a smart-home scene.
  • Run a multistep routine, such as enabling a work profile and starting navigation.
  • Publish a dynamic list of app shortcuts.

Tasker controls only appear when the phone’s System UI exposes a compatible control surface. An OEM may remove it, relocate it to Quick Settings or the lock screen, or implement a modified power menu that cannot host Tasker entries.

What you cannot normally change

Goal Normal Android support What to use instead
Replace or rename Power off Not supported through ordinary settings Keep the system action; use Quick Settings or Tasker for a separate shortcut
Replace or rename Restart Not supported through ordinary settings Use the built-in command
Modify Emergency or Lockdown Security-sensitive and protected Leave these system functions unchanged
Add a custom automation Possible through Tasker where Android 11+ controls are exposed Tasker, Quick Settings, or the provider’s own shortcut

Root access or a custom ROM may permit deeper System UI changes, but that is an advanced modification—not a universal app-based solution. It can affect Play Integrity, banking apps, over-the-air updates, device security, warranty support, and recovery if the modification fails.

Troubleshoot missing or unreliable controls

  • Confirm the phone runs Android 11 or later for Tasker’s Power Menu Action.
  • Update Tasker and the provider app through their official channels.
  • Open the power menu and look specifically for Device controls, Add controls, or an overflow menu.
  • Check Quick Settings and the lock screen; newer Pixel software may place controls there.
  • Run the Task manually in Tasker before blaming the system control.
  • Remove aggressive battery optimization for Tasker if background actions fail.
  • Check permissions for location, notifications, accessibility, smart-home services, or secure settings required by the action.
  • Reboot the phone or restart System UI after publishing a control, then remove and re-add it if necessary.
  • Test first with a simple action such as launching an app.
  • For Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other heavily customized phones, check the model-specific side-key and power-menu settings.

A locked phone may display a control but block a privileged operation until authentication. Emergency and lockdown functions should remain available even when other shortcuts are restricted.

Choose the practical option

What you want Best approach Main trade-off
Open the shutdown screen with a long press Change the power-button gesture in Settings Does not add custom shutdown buttons
Toggle lights, locks, or thermostats Google Home/device controls or Quick Settings Requires compatible, connected devices
Launch an app or run a routine Tasker Power Menu Action, if exposed by the phone More setup and inconsistent OEM support
Change the protected Power off/Restart row Not normally possible; consider root/custom ROM only with full risk awareness Security, update, and compatibility risks

The Bottom Line

For most people, customize the power-button gesture first, then use Quick Settings for shortcuts and Google Home for smart devices. Tasker is the flexible option for custom routines on Android 11-and-newer phones that expose a compatible control surface. There is no single safe, universal method to rewrite every Android phone’s built-in Power off and Restart menu.
