Short answer: Android does not provide a supported public API for replacing the Recent Apps thumbnail with a custom blur, logo, or bitmap. To prevent sensitive content from appearing, set WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE on the activity window. Android then blocks screenshots and non-secure display output; when the system captures a background preview, the resulting image is blank.
What Recent Apps can—and cannot—be customized
The Overview (Recent Apps) card is rendered by Android’s system UI. Your app can provide task metadata, but it cannot supply a replacement thumbnail through a public API.
No supported custom bitmap
Android captures the activity’s task snapshot before lifecycle callbacks such as onPause() or onStop() give you a chance to alter the view. Changing the layout, swapping in a logo, or drawing a blur from those callbacks is therefore unreliable and unsupported. It may appear to work on one device and fail on another.

On Android 12 (API 31) and newer, setTaskDescription() can set task metadata such as the label and background color. It does not expose a public custom-thumbnail bitmap. Use it for branding metadata, not for hiding confidential pixels.

Use FLAG_SECURE to protect the preview
FLAG_SECURE tells Android that a window must not be captured by screenshots or shown on a non-secure display, such as a cast or other external output. If the app moves to the background and Android takes a task screenshot, the captured card is blank rather than a readable image.

Global protection is simple, but it also prevents legitimate screenshots and screen sharing on ordinary screens. If only a password, payment, medical, or account-recovery state is sensitive, enable the flag for that state and clear it when the user leaves.

}Use a state transition that matches your UI rather than relying only on lifecycle timing. Clear the flag after the sensitive state is genuinely gone; clearing it too early can allow a later task snapshot to contain confidential data.

Version, device, and threat-model caveats
Android 11 and older
Android’s official guidance says FLAG_SECURE helped reliably on around 70% of devices running Android 11 (API 30) and lower. The documented limitation is that keyboard taps could still be recorded on certain devices. Treat this as a platform-era reliability caveat, not a guarantee for every handset.
Android 12 and newer overlays
Android 12 introduced HIDE_OVERLAY_WINDOWS, which lets an app opt out of application overlays drawn over it. It can add protection against overlay attacks alongside FLAG_SECURE, but it does not turn the task thumbnail into a custom image.
Android 17 (API 37) content capture
For apps targeting Android 17 or higher, ContentCaptureManager.setContentCaptureEnabled(false) no longer disables Content Capture. If your requirement is to restrict system capture, transition to FLAG_SECURE and verify the resulting behavior on Android 17 devices.
It is not a complete anti-recording defense
Android warns that this approach is not reliable for every overlay attack and may not correctly predict whether screen recording is active, even though it covers most use cases. It cannot stop a camera pointed at the display, and rooted or modified systems may change platform behavior. Do not describe it as a universal data-loss-prevention mechanism.
Testing the Recent Apps result
- Install a debug or release build on each supported Android version and representative manufacturer device.
- Open the activity containing test-only sensitive text.
- Press the system Recent Apps button or use the gesture to open Overview.
- Confirm that the protected card is blank rather than showing the test text.
- Try an in-app screenshot, hardware-key screenshot, screen recording, and casting session. Confirm that the restrictions match your product requirements.
- Navigate to a non-sensitive screen if you use dynamic protection, then repeat the test to ensure screenshots are restored only after the flag is cleared.
- Test rotation, multi-window mode, dialogs, deep links, process recreation, and returning from another app. These transitions often expose an accidentally early flag clear.
Troubleshooting
The Recent Apps card still shows sensitive content
- Verify that the flag is set on the visible activity’s window, not only on a parent activity that is no longer displayed.
- Set it before rendering the sensitive view, preferably in
onCreate()or immediately when entering the protected state. - Check that another code path does not call
clearFlags()during navigation, rotation, or cleanup. - Force-stop and relaunch the app after changing the implementation; an old task snapshot can remain visible until Android refreshes it.
The card is blank, but users need screenshots
That is the intended privacy result. Move protection to only the sensitive activity or state, and document the limitation to users who rely on recording, support screenshots, or casting.

A custom logo or blur appears on one phone only
There is no public API contract for a custom Recent Apps bitmap. Remove lifecycle-based thumbnail manipulation and choose between an ordinary system snapshot and the supported blank result from FLAG_SECURE.
Screen sharing is unexpectedly black
FLAG_SECURE blocks non-secure display output by design. If sharing is a required feature, do not set the flag on screens that users are allowed to share; separate those screens from payment or credential views.
An overlay attack remains possible
Combine window protection with an appropriate threat model, consider HIDE_OVERLAY_WINDOWS on Android 12+, validate accessibility and input flows, and avoid claiming that any single flag defeats every recording or overlay technique.
Performance, reliability, and maintenance
The flag itself is a window attribute and does not require generating or storing an image, so it is preferable to custom screenshot workarounds. The main maintenance cost is scope management: every newly added sensitive screen must inherit protection, and every dynamic transition must be tested after navigation changes.
Keep privacy tests in your device matrix. OEM task managers, multi-window implementations, external displays, and older Android releases can differ. Log your app’s security-state transitions in debug builds so that a premature clearFlags() is visible during QA, but never log the sensitive content you are trying to protect.

Can I show a branded placeholder instead of a blank card?
Not through a supported public Android API. FLAG_SECURE intentionally produces a blank protected capture.

Does the flag encrypt the task snapshot?
No. It tells Android not to produce or expose the window through screenshots and non-secure displays; it is not an encryption layer for already exported data.
Should I use REQUIRE_SECURE_ENV instead?
Google Play distinguishes that signal, which requires a secure environment, from the window-level FLAG_SECURE mechanism discussed here. Choose the control that matches your requirement.

Can a custom Recent Apps thumbnail be set with setTaskDescription()?
No. On Android 12 and newer it can set metadata such as label and background color, but not a public custom thumbnail bitmap.
Will FLAG_SECURE stop a camera from photographing the screen?

Is dynamic enabling safe for a payment dialog?
