Start by deciding what the template needs to do and where people will use it. For a first project, this guide uses a simple digital social post: one reusable layout with a clear headline, supporting image, and space for a short call to action. The same steps apply to many graphics, but dimensions, export settings, and print requirements depend on the intended format.
Choose the job and format before opening a design app
Answer three questions first: who will use the design, what information must it communicate, and where will it appear? A social post, presentation slide, invitation, printed flyer, and interface component are all visual templates, but they do not share the same dimensions or delivery requirements.
- Purpose: Write one sentence describing the message or task. For example: “This post announces a weekend workshop and tells viewers how to register.”
- Audience: Decide what the viewer already knows and what must stand out immediately.
- Placement: Identify the platform, screen, document, or print process where the result will be used. Check its current size or file requirements before building.
Canva’s template materials cover varied design types, while Figma’s learning resources focus more directly on digital design and team-produced assets. Neither workflow is universal; choose based on the output you need. Figma describes visual design in terms of arranging shapes, images, and text to support goals such as readability and usability (Figma design fundamentals).

Choose a starting point: blank canvas or existing template
A blank design gives you control over the structure. An existing template is often quicker for a first attempt because it gives you a starting hierarchy and arrangement to customize. In Canva, you can search for templates from the homepage or inside the editor, preview one, and then customize it; the Help Center also documents an AI-generation route. These are options, not required steps (Canva: Create designs using templates).
#1 Best Overall
- Open the design tool and choose the design type or dimensions that fit the placement you selected.
- Search for a template using the purpose, format, or subject, or begin with a blank design.
- Preview a candidate at a useful size. Check whether its hierarchy and available space fit your content before committing to it.
- Use the layout as a starting point, not as finished work: replace its sample copy and imagery and adjust its visual choices for your audience and message.
Canva’s beginner guide covers creating, editing, and sharing designs. Figma is a relevant route when the work is a digital design or a team-oriented marketing asset. Figma Buzz provides editable templates for social media assets, ads, emails, and one-pagers; publishing templates depends on the plan in use (Figma Buzz templates). The available material does not establish that one editor is universally easier or better.
Build the first version in Canva
Canva’s beginner guide identifies the main parts of its editor: a side panel for templates, elements, text, uploads, brand tools, and apps; the canvas; a top toolbar; and page controls. Names and available controls can vary with design type, device, workspace settings, and plan (Canva: Customizing templates).
1. Set up the canvas
Choose the intended design type or dimensions before laying out content. For the example social post, use the dimensions required by its actual destination rather than guessing or assuming every platform uses the same size. If you started from a template, confirm that it matches the destination well enough to adapt.

- Illustration-Grade Paper, specially-textured and heavyweight to allow bold use of color and techniques. Other pads use traditional paper and bleed through and wrinkle easily in response to marker and paint - frustrating your ability to show your creativity. Hardcover for long standing durability. Spiral bound to keep pages flat. Perforated for true-size paper.
- 144 Pages with 432 Internationally Designed Figure Outlines (“Croquis”) in 14 poses. "Croquis" is a term originating in France in 1805 to describe a rough sketch. It is now used in the fashion industry for figure templates used in the design process. Our Croquis are newly designed by our international team with a fresh and modern perspective. Produced with designers from London, NY, LA, Italy, Austria, and Brazil. This design pad represents the best from around the world of fashion.
- Single-Croquis, Full-Illustration Pages! 24 of this book's 136 pages are printed with only one figure outline on each! Other fashion sketchbooks place a minimum of 2 figures on every page in order to advertise the most number of figure outlines at the cheapest possible cost. This premium design pad provides both.
- "Perfect-Printed" Croquis. We tested many croquis offerings and found what we believe is the perfect balance of outline visibility with outline vanishing-ability when illustrated. Many products print too dark, or too light. Our testing and designer-input led us to this flexible balance. Practice-Through-Final Process. The Croquis poses are printed in small, medium, and large sizes. Create multi-pose designs side-by-side, or use the smaller sizes for practice and experimenting freely!
- Please Note, some customers have misunderstood this product: This is a sketchbook of our professionally created croquis (body outlines) exactly as used by fashion designers. Our pre-printed body outlines allow you, kids, students, artists, and designers to focus on creative designing without wasting time properly sketching the human form. This is also not a book of instructions and ideas; our customers have told us they can use Google for that! 🙂
2. Establish a simple hierarchy
Give the most important information the clearest position and strongest emphasis. For the workshop announcement, that might be the event name or date, followed by a brief explanation, then the registration instruction. Keep related items visually grouped and leave enough open space that the viewer can scan the message.
Use a small number of deliberate type and color choices. Make text readable at the size at which it will actually be viewed. If the design contains an image, ensure that it supports rather than competes with the key information.
3. Replace every piece of example content
Review text, images, shapes, and decorative elements one by one. Replace sample copy with final wording, upload or select imagery appropriate to the purpose, and remove elements that do not help convey the message. Avoid leaving template-specific placeholders, dates, names, or calls to action behind.

4. Adjust pages and elements
Use the editor’s page controls when the project has multiple pages: duplicate, rearrange, or delete pages as needed. On the canvas, move, resize, or remove elements to give the real content room. A template is reusable only if its structure still works when the example content is replaced.
Check digital and print requirements separately
For a digital design, check the destination’s current dimensions and accepted file types, and preview the design at a realistic viewing size. A layout that looks balanced while zoomed in may be difficult to read as a small post or thumbnail.
For print, color can look different on paper than on a screen. Canva recommends CMYK for print work; ask the actual print provider to confirm the required color mode and final specifications before export (Canva template guidance). Do not assume that a file prepared for digital use is ready for a printer.

Review, save, and make the design reusable
- Proof the content: Check names, dates, links, spelling, and the reading order. Confirm the most important message is easy to find.
- Preview the result: View it at the scale and in the context in which it will be used. Check for clipped text, awkward line breaks, crowded elements, or low contrast.
- Keep an editable working version: Save the design in the editor so you can revise the source rather than rebuilding it from an exported image.
- Share according to the use: If another person only needs to view the design, use an appropriate viewing share option. If they should make their own copy and adapt it as a template, use Canva’s shareable Template link workflow. Canva’s Design School explains turning designs into templates; an ordinary view link should not be treated as equivalent (Canva: Turn designs into templates).

If your task is capturing a website as an image or PDF rather than designing a reusable graphic, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below captures a page as WebP; replace the target URL and supply your API key.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common first-template problems
- The design feels cluttered: Remove decorative items that do not support the message, shorten copy, and give the headline and supporting information clearer separation.
- The result looks like the source template: Replace all example content, then adjust layout and style to suit the actual audience and purpose rather than changing only the title.
- Text is difficult to read: Preview at the actual display size, increase contrast, and simplify or enlarge small copy.
- The design is cut off or oddly spaced: Recheck the chosen dimensions and inspect the design at its intended destination size before exporting.
- A collaborator can view but not reuse the design: For a reusable Canva design, send the Template link workflow rather than assuming a standard view link creates a copy for the recipient.
- Printed color differs from the screen: Confirm color mode and production requirements with the printer; Canva recommends CMYK for print, but the provider’s specifications govern the job.
