To create a blog thumbnail, first decide where it will appear, then make an image that represents the post and remains clear at that size. Check your site’s theme or template for its aspect ratio, dimensions and crop; export an appropriately sized image; add it to the post; and preview it in every place the site displays it. There is no single pixel size that works for every blog.
What a blog thumbnail does
A thumbnail is a small image that represents a post in places such as a blog archive, category listing or related-post card. On WordPress, the corresponding feature is usually called a featured image or post thumbnail. Depending on the theme, it may also appear above the article or in a header. The editor’s featured-image control appears only when the theme supports the feature, and themes can set their own image sizes and crop behavior. See the WordPress Theme Handbook.
A good thumbnail helps readers recognize the subject at a glance. It should complement the title, not try to explain the entire article in a tiny space. Start with the post’s main idea and choose one clear subject, image or visual metaphor for it.
Plan the placement and crop before designing
The same image may appear in an archive card, at the top of a post and in a social preview. Each location can use a different size or crop. Before making the image, inspect the actual template or theme documentation and note the image’s displayed shape and dimensions. If those details are not documented, upload a draft and preview the real layouts.

Do not assume a WordPress default size is the right target for your theme. WordPress documents configurable defaults: thumbnail, up to 150 × 150 pixels; medium, up to 300 × 300; medium-large, 768 pixels wide with no height limit; and large, up to 1024 × 1024. These are WordPress image-size settings, not universal recommendations for blog cards; themes can register additional sizes and choose proportional resizing or cropping. The Handbook describes the defaults and theme-specific behavior.
- Archive or category card: Check whether the theme crops every image into a fixed shape. Keep the main subject away from edges that might be cut off.
- Above the article: Check how the featured image fits the post’s content width and whether it is cropped or shown in full.
- Social preview: Treat it as a separate placement. A social platform may use different dimensions or cropping from your blog theme, so preview it independently where possible.
Choose a representative image that works small
Use a visual that is genuinely related to the post. Google Search Central recommends relevant images, high resolution when possible and avoiding extreme aspect ratios; it does not prescribe one universal blog-thumbnail dimension. Its Image SEO Best Practices also advise placing images near relevant text on a page that matches their subject.
Design for the size at which a reader will actually see the image. A detailed screenshot, tiny labels or several competing objects can become unreadable when reduced. Prefer one focal point, strong contrast and a simple hierarchy. Canva’s guidance for featured images in its app listings recommends few elements, limited text when appropriate, and attention to scaling and cropping. That is a useful design principle, not a specification for blog thumbnails: Canva’s featured-image guidelines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Use a photograph, illustration, diagram or product screenshot only when it helps signal the post’s subject.
- If you add text, keep it brief and check legibility at the thumbnail’s rendered size. The post title usually supplies the detail.
- Keep essential content inside the area that survives the site’s crop. If a face, product or key label matters, do not place it against an edge.
- When one source image must serve several placements, compose with enough space around the focal point to allow for different crops. Preview the results rather than assuming one crop fits all.
Make, size and export the image
You can create the image in a graphics editor, a design app or another tool that exports a web-compatible image. Set the canvas to the dimensions or aspect ratio your site actually uses. If you cannot find a documented target, make a draft at a practical size for the displayed area, upload it, and adjust based on the real template’s crop and clarity.
- Set the canvas: Use the target placement’s dimensions or aspect ratio from the theme or template. Do not choose a generic “blog thumbnail” preset without checking what your site expects.
- Arrange the focal point: Make the subject prominent and leave a margin around anything that must remain visible after cropping.
- Check at display size: Reduce the design to the size of an archive card or other small placement. Remove details and text that no longer read clearly.
- Export and inspect: Choose a format and quality appropriate to the artwork and the site. Check the resulting file and its appearance in the actual layout. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal file-size target for blog thumbnails.
WordPress can generate registered image sizes from an uploaded original, but what it creates and which size a template displays depend on the installation and theme. If you change size settings or switch themes, existing uploads may not automatically have every newly required crop; check your site’s behavior and follow the theme or site administrator’s instructions for regenerating images if needed.
Upload and set it in WordPress
WordPress labels and screen layouts can vary with version, editor and installed theme. In the post editor, look for the Featured image control, commonly in the settings sidebar. If it is absent, the theme may not support featured images, or the editor layout may hide the relevant panel.

- Open the post in the WordPress editor and locate Featured image in the post settings.
- Choose Set featured image, then select an existing image or upload the new one.
- Add suitable alternative text in the media details, save or update the post, and preview the post and archive views.
- Check that the focal point is not clipped, the image is clear at its displayed size, and the post still looks right on narrow and wide layouts.
If the control does not appear, verify that the theme supports featured images. The WordPress Theme Handbook explains the feature and theme support. On a managed site, ask the administrator before changing theme code or image-size settings.
Name the file and write appropriate alt text
Use a short filename that describes the image, such as espresso-grinder-guide.webp, rather than a camera-generated string. Google says a descriptive filename can provide light clues about image subject matter; it is not a reason to stuff keywords into the name. Keep the image in context with relevant page text.
Choose alt text according to what the image does, not by mechanically describing every thumbnail:

- Informative image: Describe the useful information or subject conveyed by the image, in the context of the post.
- Decorative or redundant image: Use an empty alt attribute (
alt="") when it adds no information beyond nearby text. - Linked image: If the image is itself a link, describe the link’s target or purpose rather than merely listing visual details.
WordPress accessibility guidance explains these distinctions in Media and Alt Text, alternative text for images. Google’s image guidance also recommends useful alt text and warns against keyword stuffing.

If the thumbnail should show a live webpage—for example, a page being discussed in the post—you can capture the page with ScreenshotNeo. It returns an image or PDF from a URL, but a webpage capture is not a substitute for an original illustration when the post needs a designed editorial graphic. Here is a one-call cURL example; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The API can return PNG, JPEG or WebP, and supports full-page capture, viewport and device settings, custom CSS, and other capture options. Before a capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools to AI agents and MCP clients.
For a Python request, install the requests package first and replace the example URL as needed:
Best Value
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
For Node.js with a runtime that supports fetch, this example sends the same request. It checks the response before writing the image:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Do not expose an API key in public client-side code or commit it to a public repository. Store it in a server-side environment variable or another secret store and check the product documentation for the current authentication and request details.

Troubleshoot a thumbnail that looks wrong
- The featured-image control is missing: Check whether the active WordPress theme supports featured images; the editor may also have a hidden settings panel. The feature is theme-dependent.
- The subject is cut off: The theme or placement is cropping the source. Reposition the subject with more surrounding space, adjust the source crop, or check whether the theme offers a different image-size setting.
- The image looks soft: Confirm that the source has enough resolution for the rendered display and that the site is not serving a smaller generated size. Inspect the image at its real display dimensions.
- The image looks fine on the post but not in the archive: Those templates may use different image sizes or crops. Preview and adjust for each placement instead of judging only one view.
- The image is missing after a theme change: Check the theme’s required image sizes and whether the needed size exists for older uploads. Follow the site’s image-regeneration procedure if applicable.
- The alt text feels repetitive: If nearby text already conveys the same information and the image is decorative, use empty alt text. If the image is linked, explain its destination or purpose.
Final pre-publish check
- The image accurately represents the post and remains understandable at thumbnail size.
- Its crop works in the archive, post page and any other intended placement.
- The filename is concise and descriptive, and the alt text matches the image’s function.
- The exported image displays correctly in the site’s real templates and fits the site’s performance constraints.
