To make a transparent PNG, remove or mask the background on a layer that has an alpha channel, then export in PNG format with transparency enabled. The checkerboard you see in an editor is only a preview; the saved file contains transparent pixels rather than a checkerboard image.
How PNG transparency works
PNG stores transparency in an alpha channel separate from the red, green and blue color channels. Each pixel can be fully opaque, fully transparent or partially transparent. Partial alpha is what keeps hair, shadows and antialiased curves from looking jagged when placed on another background.
Your editor must support an alpha-capable layer before you delete pixels or apply a mask. If the layer has no alpha channel, deleting the background may fill the area with a solid color instead of transparency.
Full alpha versus PNG8
Use a normal RGB/RGBA PNG (sometimes described as PNG24 or PNG32, depending on the application) when soft edges matter. It preserves many transparency levels. PNG8 reduces transparency to two states—transparent or opaque—so it can produce halos or stair-step edges around hair, smoke and antialiased artwork. PNG8 can be suitable for simple, hard-edged icons, but it is not the safe default.

PNG versus JPEG
JPEG cannot store transparent pixels. If a JPEG image has a white background, converting the filename to .png does not remove it; you must remove the background in the source document and export again as PNG.
Create a transparent PNG in GIMP
GIMP provides the complete workflow without requiring a paid license. The key requirement is an alpha channel on the layer that contains the subject.
- Open the source. Choose File > Open, select the image, and identify the layer containing the subject in the Layers panel.
- Add alpha if necessary. Right-click the subject layer and choose Add Alpha Channel, or use Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. If the option is unavailable, an alpha channel is already present.
- Choose a removal method. For a flat, uniform background, use the Fuzzy Select or Select by Color tool and adjust the threshold until only the background is selected. For hair, curved products or irregular edges, create a path or layer mask instead of relying on one color.
- Delete or mask the background. With the background selected, press
Deleteon an alpha-enabled layer, or add a layer mask and paint black over areas to hide. A mask is safer because you can revise it without destroying original pixels. - Refine at high zoom. Zoom in around hair, fabric, glass, shadows and antialiased borders. Contract or feather a selection slightly when appropriate, and remove colored fringes left by the old background. Toggle a temporary contrasting layer underneath the subject to reveal light and dark halos.
- Verify transparency. GIMP displays removed regions as a gray checker pattern. The checker pattern indicates transparent regions in the editor; it is not part of the image.
- Export as PNG. Choose File > Export As, give the file a
.pngextension, and select Export. In the PNG options, retain an RGB/RGBA or grayscale-with-alpha format when partial transparency is required. Do not choose PNG8 for soft edges.
Selection choices for common subjects

Create a transparent PNG in Photoshop
- Select and unlock the subject. In the Layers panel, select the layer containing the subject and click the lock if it is locked. A background layer may need to be converted to a normal layer before transparent pixels can be removed.
- Run Remove Background. Open the Discover panel with the search icon or choose Help > Photoshop Help. Select Browse > Quick Actions > Remove Background. Photoshop isolates the subject and creates a transparent background or a masked layer ready for compositing or export.
- Inspect the mask. Place a temporary high-contrast color layer beneath the subject. Look for missing edges, leftover background and halos, especially around hair, translucent material and shadows.
- Brush corrections. Select the layer mask and use the Brush tool: paint white to reveal subject pixels and black to hide unwanted pixels. Work at high zoom, then check the result at the final display size.
- Export with transparency. Use the PNG option in Export As and ensure Transparency is enabled when that control is shown. Save a layered source document as well if you expect further edits.
Photoshop’s automated action is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of perfect edges. High-contrast originals generally produce cleaner isolation, but every automatic mask should be checked manually before publication.
Make transparency survive export and delivery
Use the right pixel format
Choose RGBA for color images with alpha or grayscale plus alpha for monochrome artwork. If an export dialog offers indexed color or PNG8, use it only when the design has hard edges and no need for partial transparency.

Keep the source editable
Save the GIMP project or Photoshop document before exporting. A mask preserves the original pixels, making it easier to correct a fringe than an already-deleted selection.
Check the actual file
Reopen the exported PNG in an editor, add a bright temporary background layer beneath it, and test both light and dark colors. If the subject disappears against one color, the edge may contain a halo or the supposed transparent area may still be opaque.
Why a transparent PNG turns white or black
The background was never removed
Changing a filename or exporting a JPEG as PNG cannot create transparency. Return to the source, add an alpha channel, remove or mask the background, and export again.
The layer had no alpha channel
Without alpha, deletion may reveal the layer’s background color. In GIMP, use Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel before deleting. In Photoshop, unlock or convert the background layer and use a mask.

The export mode discarded alpha
Indexed or alpha-free export settings can flatten transparent pixels. Select an RGB/RGBA mode or another format explicitly marked as supporting alpha, then reopen the result to verify it.
The viewer is showing its own background
Some file browsers and web previews display transparent pixels as white, black or a checkerboard. Test the file by placing it over a known color in an image editor or browser page; do not judge transparency from a single preview thumbnail.
Edge quality: hard logos versus complex subjects
Hard-edged logos and icons often need only a clean selection, an alpha channel and a PNG export. Complex subjects require more deliberate masking. Hair and fur have many partially transparent boundary pixels; smoke and shadows may be intentionally translucent; antialiased curves blend subject and background colors. A one-click deletion can leave a colored fringe even when the central background is gone.
- Inspect at 200–400% while editing, then check at the intended display size.
- Use a contrasting temporary background to expose light and dark contamination.
- Preserve partial alpha instead of forcing every edge pixel to opaque or transparent.
- For a background-colored fringe, refine the mask or use a color-decontamination feature carefully; do not trim so aggressively that fine subject detail disappears.
Batch and web-production considerations
For repeated assets, establish a consistent source canvas, naming convention and export profile. Keep one master with a mask, then export delivery PNGs from that master. Test transparent files in the environments where they will be used: a CSS background, an image element, a presentation app and a dark interface can reveal different edge problems.

Transparent PNGs can be larger than flattened JPEGs because they retain an alpha channel and often preserve lossless color data. Resize before export when the delivery dimensions are known, and avoid repeatedly opening and re-saving a delivery PNG as a different format. If file size is critical, compare a full-alpha PNG with an indexed version only after confirming that edge quality remains acceptable.

- White or black result: confirm the background was deleted or masked, verify an alpha channel, and export as RGBA PNG.
- Checkerboard appears in the saved design: the checker pattern was painted or captured as pixels. Return to the source and remove it; it should exist only as the editor preview.
- Jagged outline: replace a hard threshold with a mask, preserve partial alpha, and refine at high zoom.
- Colored halo: inspect against contrasting backgrounds and brush or contract the mask carefully.
- Fine details vanished: the selection was too aggressive or PNG8 reduced transparency to one bit. Restore the source mask and export full alpha.
- File works in one app but not another: test the actual PNG over light and dark backgrounds; a viewer may be substituting its own background.

Can I make a transparent PNG from a JPEG?

Is a transparent PNG always better than JPEG?
