To create a multi-page PDF with an API, send a complete document to an HTML-to-PDF renderer and let it paginate, use a renderer’s explicit multi-page mode, or generate fixed-layout pages separately and combine them. The right method depends on whether your content should flow naturally or each page needs a controlled composition. Page dimensions, page-break behavior, input formats, and job handling are provider-specific.
Choose how the pages should be made
Start with the document’s layout, not with an assumption that every PDF API splits a long image or canvas into pages the same way.
One flowing HTML document
Use a single HTML document when content length varies: invoices with different numbers of line items, reports, generated letters, or statements. Include the full content and its styles, fonts, images, and data, then let an HTML-to-PDF service paginate it. Adobe PDF Services documents creation from static or dynamic HTML, ZIP, and URL inputs. Its static HTML workflow can package an index.html file and external dependencies in a ZIP. See Adobe’s PDF creation documentation and HTML-to-PDF guide.
Explicit multi-page mode
Use a renderer’s dedicated page mode when its API exposes one and you need that behavior. Foxit documents a MULTIPLE_PAGE mode, alongside asynchronous processing that returns a task ID. Treat these as Foxit-specific concepts: consult the current reference for the exact request fields, supported page settings, and status workflow rather than assuming another provider uses the same contract. See Foxit PDF Services API documentation.

Generate separate PDFs, then combine
Choose separate page or document generation when each page has a fixed layout, comes from a different source, or must be reordered deliberately. After the component PDFs succeed, call a merge or combine operation. Adobe documents combining two or more documents as well as page operations such as inserting, replacing, and reordering pages. See Adobe’s combine-PDF guide.
Build the document and submit it safely
- Choose the source format. HTML/CSS is useful when your application already has a template or can produce markup. If content already exists as Office files, images, text, or PDFs, check whether your provider accepts those inputs. Adobe lists HTML and several Office, text, image, ZIP, and URL inputs in its creation documentation.
- Assemble all content and dependencies. Produce the complete document before conversion, including dynamic data and any CSS, fonts, and images the renderer needs. Package dependencies with the HTML or make them available at fetchable URLs. Adobe’s static HTML guide describes a ZIP with
index.htmlat the archive root and dependencies alongside it. - Keep credentials on a trusted server. Do not put API keys or bearer tokens in browser JavaScript, a mobile app distributed to users, or another untrusted client. Adobe says its SDK credentials are for server-based use and should be kept secure. See Adobe’s API overview and getting-started material.
- Submit the job using the provider’s contract. Some workflows upload an input asset first, then submit a conversion job. The result may be returned through a polling URL or a task ID rather than in the first response.
- Set page layout deliberately. Specify page width and height and any supported header/footer options. Check the provider’s current documentation for units, margins, page breaks, and limits; similarly named fields can behave differently across APIs.
- Retrieve and inspect the PDF. Save the returned bytes or downloaded asset as a PDF. Check page count and order, then inspect text wrapping, fonts, images, margins, headers, and footers using both short and long representative inputs.
- Combine components if needed. If you generated pieces separately, combine them only after each conversion has completed successfully, and verify the final order.
Adobe REST request shape: HTML to PDF
This is an illustrative, vendor-specific request shape from Adobe’s documentation, not a universal PDF API format or a complete runnable conversion script. It assumes that YOUR_UPLOADED_ASSET_ID already refers to an uploaded input asset and that you obtained the client ID and access token. The example sets a page width of 11 and height of 8.5; choose dimensions and orientation suitable for your document. Follow the current Adobe API reference for required fields and the full upload, job-submission, polling, and result-retrieval sequence.
curl --location --request POST 'https://pdf-services.adobe.io/operation/htmltopdf'
--header 'x-api-key: YOUR_CLIENT_ID'
--header 'Content-Type: application/json'
--header 'Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN'
--data '{
"assetID": "YOUR_UPLOADED_ASSET_ID",
"json": "{}",
"includeHeaderFooter": true,
"pageLayout": {
"pageWidth": 11,
"pageHeight": 8.5
},
"waitTimeToLoad": 100
}'
The request shows configuration, but does not itself upload the HTML or retrieve the finished PDF. Adobe’s documented SDK workflow covers those surrounding steps; implement each against the current documentation instead of treating this excerpt as a complete end-to-end program.
Control pagination and validate the result
Do not assume an oversized canvas, a long page, or a particular CSS page-break rule will produce the intended pages in every renderer. The reviewed vendor documentation establishes examples of page layout and page-mode controls, not identical CSS pagination behavior across services. Use the selected provider’s documented options, and test the actual resulting PDF.

- Check page count and ordering. Confirm that flowing content has not been clipped and that separately generated pages appear in the intended sequence.
- Look for blank pages and overflow. Inspect page boundaries, large tables, long paragraphs, and content close to the bottom margin.
- Check rendering dependencies. Missing or late-loading fonts, images, or stylesheets can change line wrapping and page count. Bundle resources or ensure the renderer can access them.
- Verify text and visual output. Confirm that text is selectable when required and that fonts, images, margins, headers, and footers render as intended.
- Assess accessibility separately. Do not assume ordinary HTML conversion automatically meets accessibility requirements. Adobe documents PDF accessibility auto-tagging as a separate API capability; determine whether your output needs it and configure it accordingly.
Handle remote resources, security, and asynchronous jobs
Remote URLs are a security and availability boundary
If your renderer fetches HTML or assets from URLs, those resources must be accessible to the service when the job runs. Adobe’s URL-based HTML-to-PDF conversion does not support non-HTTPS URLs or hostnames resolving to non-routable IP addresses, including redirects to such addresses. Those are Adobe-specific restrictions documented in its HTML conversion guide; check the selected provider’s current rules. Restrict user-controlled URL inputs and avoid allowing a renderer to reach internal services or private network resources.
Keep secrets out of untrusted clients
Make conversion requests from a backend you control, or from another trusted server-side environment. Keep API keys and bearer tokens in server-side configuration or a secrets manager, and do not return them to end users. Adobe’s API overview specifically describes its SDK credentials as server-based credentials that should not be sent to untrusted environments or end-user devices.
Model the job as a state machine
When a provider processes jobs asynchronously, your application needs to distinguish pending, completed, and failed states. Adobe’s SDK example submits a job, obtains a polling URL, retrieves the result, and reads the resulting content stream; Foxit documents asynchronous processing with a task ID. Poll or retrieve status according to that provider’s current contract, apply appropriate timeouts, and surface a useful failure state rather than assuming the first successful HTTP response means the PDF is ready.
Choose a workflow that fits the output
| Need | Suitable approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Variable-length content such as a report or invoice | One complete HTML document rendered to PDF | Page dimensions, resource loading, wrapping, and page-break behavior |
| A renderer-specific multi-page setting is available | Explicit multiple-page mode | Exact mode name, request format, task status, and supported layout controls |
| Fixed layouts, different sources, or controlled page order | Generate component PDFs, then combine or reorder | Every component succeeded; the merged page count and order are correct |
For any option, compare source-format fit, pagination controls, assembly operations, synchronous versus asynchronous workflow, asset and credential security, and output requirements such as accessibility or file size. The cited documentation supplies feature examples, not independent comparative measurements of provider speed, fidelity, or reliability.

Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is missing images, fonts, or styles
Likely cause: The renderer could not fetch a dependency, or the file was not included in the uploaded package. Fix: Check resource paths and access permissions, package dependencies with the HTML where supported, and confirm that remote assets are reachable by the rendering service.
The output has an unexpected number of pages
Likely cause: Content height, font substitution, margins, or renderer-specific pagination behavior differs from the template’s assumptions. Fix: Verify the configured paper dimensions and margins, inspect long and short cases, and use the provider’s supported page controls rather than relying on an unverified CSS behavior.
The request succeeds but there is no PDF in the response
Likely cause: The endpoint accepted an asynchronous job and returned a task identifier or polling location. Fix: Follow the provider’s status and result-retrieval workflow; handle pending, failed, and completed outcomes explicitly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsURL conversion rejects the source
Likely cause: The URL scheme, destination host, redirect, or network accessibility violates the provider’s restrictions. Fix: Use HTTPS where required, review redirect destinations, and consult current rules for private or non-routable addresses. For Adobe URL conversion, non-HTTPS sources and hostnames resolving to non-routable IPs are unsupported.

Credentials appear in a browser request
Likely cause: The frontend is calling the PDF service directly with a secret key or bearer token. Fix: Move the API call to a trusted backend, authenticate your own application’s request, and keep the provider credential server-side.
The merged document has missing or misordered pages
Likely cause: A component job failed or the assembly step used an unintended order. Fix: Confirm every source PDF is complete before combining, specify the desired order explicitly where supported, and inspect the final page count and sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an HTML-to-PDF API create more than one page from a single request?
Yes. A renderer can paginate one complete HTML document, but the exact page behavior depends on the provider and its supported layout controls.
Does the Adobe example above run by itself?
No. It illustrates the conversion request only; it assumes credentials and an uploaded source asset and omits the surrounding upload and result-retrieval steps.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a webpage screenshot PDF the same as an HTML-to-PDF document?
No. A screenshot PDF captures a rendered webpage; a general HTML-to-PDF workflow is intended to convert a document and its content into paginated pages.
