Choose the workflow based on what you have: generate or fill one document and export it when the content needs to flow across pages; merge PDFs when you already have separate files; extract pages when you need only selected parts of an existing PDF. These are different operations, and the right choice depends on your source material, layout needs, and whether PDF bookmarks must survive.
Choose the right PDF workflow
“Create a multi-page PDF” can mean producing pages from content, combining existing PDFs, or extracting selected pages. Decide which describes your input before building the workflow. Use this pattern when your workflow starts with content rather than finished PDFs. A connected document service can create or fill a document from text or a template; the service then exports that document as a PDF. Because pagination belongs to the document, page layout should be checked in the document before treating the exported file as final.

Example: n8n with Google Docs and Google Drive
A community-published n8n template demonstrates a flow that turns Markdown content into a Google Doc, exports it to PDF using Google Drive, archives the PDF, and shares it through Slack. Treat this as an example of a possible design, not a guarantee that every n8n installation or account can run it unchanged. The template depends on connected-service credentials and appropriate permissions.
- Prepare the content your workflow will pass to the document step, such as Markdown in the template example.
- Connect the relevant document and storage services, and make sure the account used by the workflow can create or update the document and write the exported file to its destination.
- Create or populate the document. n8n’s Google Docs integration lists create, get, and update document operations; choose the operation that matches whether the document is new or already exists.
- Export the document to PDF through the connected Google Drive service, as the example template does.
- Route the PDF to its required destination, such as an archive, and add a sharing step only if your process requires it.
- Inspect the resulting PDF for page breaks, missing content, and readability before relying on the workflow output.
n8n describes itself as connecting apps through APIs, and it offers both Cloud and self-hosting options. The execution environment and connected-service setup therefore depend on how your team runs n8n; the cited example does not establish identical configuration steps for every deployment.
Google Docs through Zapier
Zapier’s Google Docs help describes creating documents from text or templates. It identifies a Google account and appropriate document permissions as prerequisites. Check that the connected account is authorized and has the necessary document permissions, and that the workflow can write to its intended storage destination.
