The right method depends on what “interactive” means. Use WordPress’s core Image block when one image should link somewhere or enlarge on click. Use an image-map or hotspot plugin when separate regions need their own links, labels, or popups. Build a custom block with the Interactivity API when you need bespoke behavior that can be reused across a site.
Choose the type of interaction you need

The standard Image block does not divide one picture into multiple independent clickable hotspots. Treat maps, diagrams, product images, floor plans, and annotated screenshots as hotspot or custom-block projects instead.
Make a single image clickable with the Image block
This is the simplest and most maintainable option when the whole image has one destination or should open at a larger size.
- Open the post or page in the WordPress Editor. Select the Image block, then upload a file, choose one from the Media Library, or insert an image URL.
- Add alternative text. In the block settings, describe the information conveyed by the image. If it is purely decorative and adds no information or function, mark it as decorative instead.
- Apply one link. Use the block toolbar’s link control and enter the destination. For a larger view, enable Enlarge on click in the Image block settings when that option is available in your WordPress installation.
- Preview at the actual display width. Check the link, focus order, captions, and mobile layout before publishing.
Uploading the file to your Media Library is generally safer than hotlinking it from another site. A remote image can disappear if the original file is moved, deleted, or no longer shared.

Create multiple clickable areas with a hotspot plugin
For several independent regions, install an image-map or hotspot plugin from the WordPress.org plugin directory, then test it on the site where it will run. The directory’s image-map tag contains multiple listings; no single listing establishes a universal best choice.
Draw Attention
Draw Attention’s publisher describes a workflow in which you create hotspots that reveal content or send visitors to a URL. Its listing mentions a WordPress Editor block and shortcode options, along with keyboard and screen-reader access and progressive enhancement. Those are the publisher’s claims, not an independent accessibility audit, so verify them with your theme and content.
Pleaseup image hotspots
Pleaseup describes a visual editor for placing hotspots and a shortcode such as [wphs_image id="123"]. Its FAQ says hotspot data is associated with the attachment ID and rendered through that shortcode. The listing also documents server-side oEmbed requests when an authenticated editor pastes a supported provider URL into a tooltip. Confirm that behavior and any external-service implications before using provider embeds on a production site.

Plugin setup checklist
- Back up the site and record the WordPress, theme, page-builder, and PHP versions.
- Install the plugin from Plugins → Add New, or upload a package from the publisher you trust.
- Create a test image first. Add a small number of regions and assign each a link, text panel, or media item.
- Insert the result using the plugin’s block, visual editor, shortcode, or page-builder element, depending on its documented workflow.
- Resize the browser and test on a real phone. Confirm that regions remain aligned when the image scales.
- Test keyboard focus and activation, screen-reader output, touch targets, and what visitors see if JavaScript is blocked or the plugin is later deactivated.
Do not infer full compatibility from a directory description. A plugin may work in the block editor but behave differently in a particular theme, builder, caching setup, or responsive layout.
Build a custom interactive block with the Interactivity API
Custom development is appropriate when the interaction is part of a product, must be reused across many pages, or needs behavior that a plugin cannot express.
WordPress includes the Interactivity API in Core from WordPress 6.5. The official documentation says sites running below 6.5 need Gutenberg 17.5 or newer for the API. Check the target site’s versions before choosing this route.

What the developer needs to implement
- A block that stores the image and hotspot coordinates or other interaction data.
- Front-end directives and state for opening panels, changing content, or following links.
- Responsive coordinate handling so hotspots track the image as it scales.
- Keyboard focus, activation, visible focus styles, and screen-reader names.
- A sensible fallback when scripts fail, such as a list of the same destinations or details below the image.
The API provides a standard way to add front-end interactions to blocks; it does not automatically make an image accessible or decide how hotspot data should be authored. Those behaviors remain part of the block’s design and testing.

Write the image alternative text for its purpose
If the image communicates information, describe that information in alternative text. If it is only decoration and has no informational or functional role, mark it decorative. When hotspots carry essential meaning, do not hide the only copy of that information in an image with no equivalent text.
Make every hotspot operable without a hover
Hover-only tooltips fail for keyboard and touch users. Each region should receive keyboard focus and provide an activation method such as Enter or Space. Keep focus visible, and ensure the revealed panel can itself be reached and dismissed.

Give controls meaningful names
A screen reader should announce what a hotspot does, not just “button” or a coordinate. Use labels such as “View the north entrance” or “Open specifications for the blue jacket,” matching the destination or revealed content.
Provide a non-image route
Repeat essential links or descriptions in an accessible list, table, or adjacent text. This also gives visitors a usable path when an image fails to load or a plugin script is unavailable.

Troubleshoot common failures
Hotspots shift after resizing
Check whether the plugin stores coordinates as percentages or fixed pixels. Recreate or recalibrate regions at the image’s intended aspect ratio, then test intermediate widths rather than only desktop and phone breakpoints.

The image works in the editor but not on the published page
Clear page and browser caches, check the front-end shortcode or block output, and look for JavaScript errors caused by a theme, optimization plugin, or page builder. Test with only the hotspot plugin and a default theme on a staging copy to isolate conflicts.
Mobile visitors cannot activate a region
Increase the touch area, avoid hover as the sole trigger, and test with one hand on an actual touch device. Provide the equivalent links or details in nearby text.
A plugin is removed or disabled
Shortcodes may appear as plain text and plugin-specific content may vanish. Keep a backup of the source image and hotspot destinations, and maintain a text-based fallback before replacing or deactivating the plugin.
Publish only after a complete interaction test
- Verify every destination and tooltip.
- Use Tab, Enter, and Space to reach and activate each region.
- Check focus visibility and screen-reader names.
- Test touch activation, orientation changes, and several image widths.
- Confirm alternative text, captions, and nearby fallback content.
- Test with caching, optimization, and consent tools enabled.
- Check the page with scripts disabled or the plugin temporarily inactive.
For one destination, stay with the core Image block. For several regions, choose a maintained hotspot tool and test its output on your installation. Use the Interactivity API when the interaction is a genuine custom component worth developing and maintaining.
