You can create a custom WordPress layout in two ways: use Appearance > Editor with a compatible block theme, or open a plugin builder such as Elementor or Beaver Builder on the page you want to design. Choose a page-level editor for a one-off composition, and choose a WordPress template or template part when the same structure should govern multiple pages or a shared site area.
Choose the right kind of layout before you start
WordPress uses different objects for different scopes. A template defines the structure of a page type, while a template part contains a repeated area such as a header, footer, or sidebar. A regular page edited with a builder is usually the right choice when only that page needs a special arrangement.
| What you are changing | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One landing page or campaign page | Page editor or plugin builder | It changes a single page without changing the rest of the site. |
| Every post, product, or page of a type | WordPress template | The structure can be applied consistently to that page type. |
| Shared header, footer, or sidebar | Template part | One site area can be reused across templates. |
| A reusable design that should be customized after insertion | Pattern or saved builder template | It gives you a starting layout while allowing local edits. |
| A block that must stay identical everywhere | Synced reusable block | Edits to the source propagate to every use. |
Your active theme and installed builder determine which controls and templates appear. A block theme exposes the Site Editor; a classic theme may not. A site already built with a plugin builder is usually easiest to extend in that same builder.
Route 1: Build a layout with the native WordPress Site Editor
Use this route when the active theme supports full site editing and you do not need a separate visual-builder plugin.
#1 Best Overall
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Editor.
- Open Templates to edit a page-type structure. Choose Patterns when you need a reusable design or template part.
- Select an existing template, or create a new one if your installation offers that option.
- Arrange blocks into the hierarchy your page needs: an opening section, supporting content, proof or detail, and an appropriate next step.
- Use patterns for repeatable starting designs. If a design must remain synchronized across every location, insert a synced reusable block instead of an ordinary pattern.
- Preview the changes at the relevant viewport sizes, then select Save.
WordPress documents pattern and template-part management from the Site Editor sidebar since WordPress 6.3. The available commands can differ by WordPress version and theme. The Site Editor can also export a theme containing template and style changes, which is useful when moving a block-theme design, but an export is not a guarantee that every theme or plugin will reproduce the layout without adjustments.
Route 2: Create a page layout with Elementor
Elementor is useful when you want a visual page-level workflow or the site already uses Elementor.
- Open the page or post in the WordPress editor and choose Edit with Elementor (the exact button label can vary with the installation).
- Open Elementor’s template library.
- Choose Blocks for a section or container, Pages for a complete webpage layout, or My Templates for a design saved on your site.
- Insert the selected item and replace its text, images, links, and other content with your own.
- Adjust the layout’s sections or containers, columns, spacing, typography, colors, and responsive settings. Keep structural elements consistent so the page remains understandable and maintainable.
- Preview the page at the screen sizes your visitors use, then publish or update it.
Elementor’s documented import workflow also accepts template files in JSON or ZIP format. Treat imported files as starting material: theme styles, fonts, widgets, dynamic fields, and other plugins can require manual correction.

Route 3: Create a layout with Beaver Builder
Beaver Builder provides prebuilt layouts that you can apply to an existing page and then customize.
- Open the target page or post and launch Beaver Builder.
- Open the Content panel and select Templates.
- Choose a prebuilt layout group and insert the layout.
- If the page already contains content, choose whether to replace it, place the new layout before it (prepend), or place it after it (append).
- Edit the inserted rows, columns, and modules. Replace demonstration content and check links, images, headings, and forms.
- Preview the page at relevant widths and save or publish it.
Beaver Builder’s saved template items are inserted as independent instances. Changing an inserted instance does not change the original saved item or other pages where it was used. That behavior differs from a synchronized WordPress reusable block.
Build a useful content hierarchy, not just a collection of sections
A page builder makes positioning easy, but it does not decide what the page should communicate. Arrange the layout in the order a reader needs:
Rank #3
- Opening: state the page’s purpose and the action or answer it offers.
- Supporting content: explain the main benefits, steps, or choices.
- Proof or detail: add demonstrations, specifications, examples, testimonials, or other substantiation that is appropriate to the page.
- Next step: provide a relevant call to action, contact route, sign-up, purchase step, or navigation choice.
Use one heading hierarchy, meaningful link text, readable contrast, and predictable spacing. Use the builder’s structural rows, containers, and columns for layout; use content modules for headings, paragraphs, images, forms, and calls to action. A documented template insertion workflow does not establish that one visual design will perform better than another, so judge the result against your site’s content and audience rather than an assumed universal “best” layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDecide how reuse should work before saving
Editable copies
A WordPress pattern is a reusable starting design. After insertion, you can edit that copy without changing the pattern source. This is appropriate for pages that share a visual structure but need different text or media.
Synchronized content
A synced reusable block is for content that must stay the same wherever it appears. Edit the source and the change propagates to every use, so reserve it for genuinely global or coordinated content.

Independent Beaver Builder templates
A saved Beaver Builder template creates an independent inserted instance. It is suitable when you want to reuse a layout framework and then tailor each page separately.
Saved Elementor templates
Elementor’s My Templates library lets you insert designs you have saved. Confirm how your site’s widgets and global styles are configured before treating a saved item as a portable, universal component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Preview, save, and check the result
- Check the page in the desktop and mobile viewport sizes relevant to your visitors.
- Look for overflowing text, clipped images, awkward column stacking, and buttons that become difficult to tap.
- Verify that headings follow a logical order and that every navigation link, form, and call to action works.
- Confirm that global header, footer, fonts, and colors have not been unintentionally changed.
- Save only after reviewing the intended scope: a page edit, a template edit, a pattern, or a template part.
Previewing a responsive layout is a design check, not a speed test. Do not infer a performance score from the builder preview alone.
Plan portability before moving a layout
| System | Documented portability option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress Site Editor | Export a theme with Site Editor template and style changes; import or export user patterns where supported. | Theme, block, font, and plugin differences may require adjustments. |
| Elementor | Import JSON or ZIP template files. | Imported widgets, global styles, dynamic data, and theme dependencies may not match. |
| Beaver Builder | Export and import reusable templates. | Imported layouts can depend on the destination site’s modules, settings, and theme. |
Export the smallest reusable unit that matches your goal. A full theme export is appropriate for a block-theme design system; a page or saved template is more practical for a single layout. Keep a copy of the original before importing or replacing content.
Which approach should you choose?
- Choose the Site Editor when your block theme supports it and native WordPress controls cover the design you need.
- Choose Elementor when the site already relies on Elementor or you need its documented Blocks, Pages, and My Templates workflow.
- Choose Beaver Builder when its prebuilt layouts and replace/prepend/append choices fit your editing process.
- Stay with the builder already used by the site when possible; mixing systems can make templates, styles, and maintenance harder to understand.
There is no documented universal winner among these options. The practical decision is the combination of scope, theme compatibility, starting layout, reuse behavior, portability, and the editing skills of your team.
