To create a separate RSS feed in WordPress, register a named feed with add_feed(), generate valid RSS XML in its callback, and refresh rewrite rules once. First check whether WordPress’s built-in feeds already cover your needs: a custom endpoint is only necessary when you need a distinct URL, a different content selection, or extra feed data.
Decide whether you need a new feed
WordPress provides built-in RSS and Atom feeds, and its theme functions can expose feed links. Review the available feed types and URLs in the WordPress feeds handbook before adding another endpoint. If a built-in feed includes the content you want, link to it rather than maintaining a custom feed.
A custom feed is useful when subscribers or another service need a distinct URL for a specific content scope—such as a selected content type—or for fields beyond the standard feed output. Decide what content belongs in it and which fields the consumer requires, such as title, permalink, publication date, excerpt, or additional data.
Register a named feed endpoint
WordPress’s add_feed() reference registers a feed name and the callback that produces its output. The name becomes part of the feed URL, so choose a unique, descriptive name and use the same spelling when requesting the endpoint. WordPress specifies that the name must not begin with an underscore.

Register the feed during the init action, then provide a callback that outputs the feed document. This is the basic shape; my-updates is an example name, and render_my_updates_feed must be replaced with a callback that exists on your site:
add_action( 'init', function () {
add_feed( 'my-updates', 'render_my_updates_feed' );
} );The resulting endpoint uses the registered feed name in the URL, commonly as https://example.com/feed/my-updates/. The exact URL can depend on the site’s permalink and rewrite configuration.

Choose where the code belongs
For functionality that should remain available when you change themes, put the registration and callback in a site-specific plugin or a dedicated functionality plugin. WordPress’s rss2_item hook reference notes that the hook can be used from a theme’s functions.php or from a plugin. Theme code is an option, but the feed may stop working if you switch to a theme without that code.

A PHP snippet plugin such as WPCode is optional tooling; it is not required by WordPress. Whichever method you use, make PHP changes on a staging site or keep a reliable rollback path. A syntax error can make the site inaccessible.

Build valid feed output
The callback determines what the endpoint returns. Generate a complete, well-formed RSS document using WordPress feed conventions and appropriate feed tags, or adapt an existing feed template to your content query. There is no single callback that safely fits every content type and site configuration.
- Include the required channel and item information expected by the RSS format and consuming service.
- Escape values for XML, and output dates and content in the expected formats.
- Set the response content type appropriately and ensure no whitespace, warnings, or other output appears before the XML declaration or feed content.
- If the feed needs additional data on each standard RSS 2.0 item, consider the
rss2_itemaction. It adds output alongside the default item, but an arbitrary XML element is not automatically part of RSS 2.0 or understood by feed readers. Use a recognized namespace or module only when the intended consumer supports it.
Keep the query, escaping, and output aligned with the site’s installed WordPress version and any custom post types or plugins that affect the content. The cited references do not establish a latest-version compatibility guarantee for a particular custom callback.

Refresh rewrite rules and open the feed
After registering a new feed name, WordPress requires rewrite rules to be flushed once so the new route takes effect. The add_feed() reference describes this one-time requirement. In the dashboard, save the Permalinks settings after adding the feed; do not flush rewrite rules on every page request.

- In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Permalinks and save the settings once to refresh rewrite rules.
- Open the custom feed URL using the exact registered feed name and inspect the response.
- Validate the XML with the W3C feed validation service, then test it in the reader or service that will consume it.
Troubleshoot common problems
The custom feed URL returns 404
- Check that the feed name in the URL exactly matches the name passed to
add_feed(). - Confirm the registration code is active and runs on
init. - Save the Permalinks settings once to refresh rewrite rules.
The response is not readable as a feed
Check the callback’s content type and make sure no PHP warning, debug message, whitespace, or other output precedes the XML. A small amount of stray output can invalidate an otherwise correct document.

The feed fails XML validation
Inspect the error reported by the validator. Common areas to check include XML syntax, required channel or item fields, language configuration, namespaces, and escaping of characters in titles or content.
A custom item field is missing in a reader
Adding an element with rss2_item does not guarantee that a reader will display it. The WordPress hook reference cautions that custom elements are not part of RSS 2.0 by default and may not be used by readers. Confirm that the consuming service supports the relevant namespace or module before relying on the field.
Use a tutorial snippet as a starting point, not a drop-in solution
WPBeginner’s custom RSS feed tutorial, published November 11, 2024, demonstrates one implementation approach and optional snippet-plugin workflow. Its example should not be copied blindly: adapt it to your content query, output requirements, escaping, and WordPress setup, then validate the result. The WordPress feed handbook was last updated July 7, 2025; the cited function and hook references do not make a claim about the latest release or cross-version testing.
