You can add shared chat rooms to a WordPress site with a plugin such as Better Messages: install and activate it, create a room in WP Admin → Better Messages → Chat Rooms, set reading and reply permissions, and place the room on any page with its shortcode. BuddyPress is not required for this setup.
What you need before creating a room
- A WordPress site where you can install plugins and access the administration dashboard.
- A decision about who may read the room and who may post. These are separate controls.
- A plan for whether participation should persist after users leave or represent only people currently viewing the room.
Better Messages is a documented example. Its WordPress.org listing describes chat rooms and group conversations in the free version, while its WebSocket option is a paid offering described as providing instant delivery and additional features. Those are vendor-listed capabilities, so confirm current feature eligibility and pricing before relying on them.
Install Better Messages
- In WordPress administration, open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Better Messages.
- Choose the plugin, click Install Now, and then click Activate.
- After activation, use the plugin’s settings area when you need general configuration. The directory listing points administrators to Settings → Better Messages.
The plugin directory also documents manual installation by uploading the plugin folder to /wp-content/plugins/bp-better-messages. The dashboard installation method is usually simpler because WordPress handles the files and activation for you.
Create and configure a chat room
- Open WP Admin → Better Messages → Chat Rooms.
- Create a new room and give it a clear name, such as “General Discussion,” “Course Cohort,” or “Project Support.”
- Configure who can read the room.
- Configure separately who can reply or participate. A room can be visible to guests while restricting posting to signed-in users, or it can allow guests to participate if that matches your moderation plan.
- Choose the room’s participation model before publishing it.
- Save the room and note its numeric ID for the embed shortcode.
Set reading and reply access independently
Do not assume that displaying a room makes every visitor a contributor. Review guest, member, and excluded-user settings at the room level. For a public community, you might allow everyone to read but require an account to reply. For a private support or course room, restrict both reading and posting to the intended members.

Choose regular or presence-based participation

Embed the room on a WordPress page
- Create or edit the page, post, or page-builder layout where the room should appear.
- Add a Shortcode block (or the equivalent shortcode element in your page builder).
- Enter the room shortcode, replacing the example ID with the ID of your room:
[better_messages_chat_room id="123"] - Publish or update the page, then open it as a normal visitor and as a permitted member to verify both visibility and posting behavior.
The same room can be embedded in multiple locations. The conversation, participant list, and history are shared, so a room placed on a public homepage, a members-only page, a course page, or a community area does not create separate conversations.
Can you create one main room and smaller rooms?
Yes, the Better Messages support guidance describes a central room plus additional rooms for specific purposes, and says this arrangement does not require BuddyPress. Use one room for site-wide discussion and separate rooms for teams, classes, projects, or support topics. Treat that guidance as plugin-specific rather than a guarantee about WordPress itself.

Do you need BuddyPress?
No. BuddyPress is optional for the Better Messages room workflow described here. Better Messages can create, configure, and embed rooms without requiring BuddyPress.
BuddyPress is a separate, broader community plugin with components for member profiles, activity, groups, and related social features. Consider it when you need a full community layer; do not install it solely to make a Better Messages chat room.

Free polling or paid real-time delivery
The plugin documentation distinguishes the free room feature from its paid WebSocket option. The documentation describes free delivery as occurring on the next polling cycle and the WebSocket version as instant. These descriptions come from the vendor and are not an independent performance test or a guarantee for every host, browser, or network.
If immediate message delivery is essential, check the vendor’s current plan details, compatibility requirements, and licensing before choosing the WebSocket option. Commercial terms and supported features can change.

Practical room designs
Public announcement and discussion room
Allow visitors to read, require accounts to reply, and embed the room on a prominent community page. This keeps the conversation discoverable while reducing anonymous posting.
Members-only support room
Restrict reading and replying to authenticated members, then embed the same room on the support page and inside the member area. Use a regular room when members should remain associated with the conversation.

Live class or event room
Use a presence-based room when the useful signal is who is currently in the session. Place the shortcode on the event or lesson page and remove access when the event ends if the discussion should not continue.

- The room is blank: confirm that the shortcode uses the actual room ID and that the room was saved.
- Visitors can read but cannot post: review reply permissions separately from read permissions, including guest restrictions.
- The wrong people appear as participants: check whether the room is regular or presence-based; the two models intentionally produce different participant lists.
- Two embeds show different content: verify that both locations use the same room ID rather than two separately created rooms.
- Messages do not appear instantly: the free version is described as polling-based. Check whether the paid WebSocket feature is required for your desired behavior and whether its current requirements are met.
- The plugin does not install: verify your WordPress administrator permissions, confirm that the plugin is compatible with your current WordPress release, and use the documented manual upload path only when dashboard installation is unavailable.
Before you publish the room
- Test the page while logged out, as a normal member, and as an administrator.
- Confirm that reading and replying permissions match the intended audience.
- Check whether old messages should remain visible and whether moderation rules are documented.
- Verify every embed uses the intended room ID.
- Recheck current plugin documentation, WordPress compatibility, and paid-feature terms because these can change after installation.
