To create Google Play screenshots, capture real screens from the version you will publish, export JPEG or 24-bit PNG files that meet Google’s size and aspect-ratio limits, prepare the device-specific sets your app supports, and upload them in Play Console at Main store listing → Graphics. The general baseline is at least two screenshots across different device types. Recommendation surfaces have higher-resolution guidance, and Wear OS, TV, Automotive, tablet/Chromebook, and Android XR listings add their own requirements.
This workflow produces assets that pass technical checks while giving prospective users an honest preview of the app. Google says store-listing screenshots must accurately reflect the app’s functionality; a mismatch can lead to rejection. See the current official preview-asset requirements before every release because limits can change.
1. Plan the screenshot set before you capture
Map screenshots to the device types you distribute
In Play Console, screenshots are uploaded in device-specific sections. Plan a set for every form factor your app actually supports: phone, tablet or Chromebook, Wear OS, Android TV, Android Automotive OS, or Android XR. You can add up to eight screenshots for each supported device type. Do not upload a phone image as a substitute for a required TV, watch, car, or XR asset.
- Phone: capture the main mobile experience and its most useful workflows.
- Tablet/Chromebook: show the large-screen layout, not a stretched phone composition.
- Wear OS: show only the watch app or watch-face interface.
- TV: provide a TV screenshot and the required Android TV banner.
- Automotive: use the category’s required portrait and landscape dimensions with generic system UI.
- XR: use the separate 8:5 PNG/JPEG specification.
Choose a sequence that explains the product
Use the first image to identify the app and its core value. Follow with distinct features or outcomes rather than several nearly identical screens. Keep the first three images especially focused on the actual UI. A short sequence might be: home or dashboard, the primary task, a result or completed workflow, and a differentiating feature.

Capture the current production experience. Remove obsolete screens, disabled features, test data that implies capabilities you do not ship, and promotional claims that can become stale. Google’s listing guidance says the images should accurately reflect what users can do after installation; screenshots that promise absent functionality risk rejection (see Google’s publishing tips).
2. Capture clean, truthful images
Prepare the app state
- Build or install the exact release candidate you intend to publish.
- Seed readable, representative data so important controls and results are visible without exposing personal information.
- Set the intended orientation and device profile for each listing section.
- Dismiss dialogs, debug overlays, permission prompts, and transient error messages unless the screen itself is a core feature.
- Clean the status bar. Google advises removing excess notification-bar elements and showing full battery, Wi-Fi, and mobile-service indicators where they appear.
Do not add a person holding or touching a phone unless off-device interaction is central to the app. Avoid blurry, pixelated, stretched, skewed, sideways, or heavily compressed captures.
Add text without overpowering the UI
Short taglines can clarify a screen, but Google says they should occupy no more than 20% of the image. Do not put ranking or award claims, testimonials, prices, discounts, or calls to action such as “Download now” on the artwork. Avoid time-sensitive copy that will age quickly. Keep the interface prominent, particularly in the first three images.

Keep localization honest
If an overlay, caption, or graphic contains language-specific text, create localized screenshot variants rather than showing English copy in every market. Google’s store-listing guidance recommends complementary visual styles and minimal text, and advises separate assets when screenshots contain text. Add concise, context-specific alt text for each image; Google recommends 140 characters or fewer. See Best practices for your store listing.
3. Meet the general file and size rules
For the general listing requirement, each screenshot must be a JPEG or 24-bit PNG without an alpha channel. The minimum dimension is 320 pixels, the maximum is 3,840 pixels, and the longest dimension cannot be more than twice the shortest.

The high-resolution sets are recommendation guidance, not a replacement for the baseline rule. Check the device-specific section in Play Console for any additional mandatory condition.
4. Device-specific requirements
Tablets and Chromebooks
Prepare at least four large-screen screenshots between 1,080 and 7,680 pixels, using 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. Compose the layout so overlay text is not cut off when the image appears on Play homepages.
Wear OS apps and watch faces
At least one screenshot from the current version is required. Use a 1:1 image of at least 384 × 384 pixels, with no transparency or masking. Show only the app or watch-face interface: no device frame, extra text, decorative graphics, or background. For a customizable watch face, show more than one available permutation.
Android TV
A TV-enabled app needs at least one TV screenshot before publishing, plus an Android TV banner. TV screenshots appear only on TV devices, so a phone capture does not satisfy this requirement.
Android Automotive OS
Where the category requires Automotive screenshots, provide at least two portrait images at 800 × 1,280 and two landscape images at 1,024 × 768. Use generic system UI; do not depict a particular vehicle or OEM interface.
Android XR
Upload four to eight PNG or JPEG screenshots, each up to 8 MB, in an 8:5 aspect ratio. The recommended resolution is 3,840 × 2,400; the minimum is 1,920 × 1,200.

5. Review every file before upload
- Confirm the image belongs to the release candidate and the visible feature exists in the shipped app.
- Check orientation, aspect ratio, dimensions, file type, color, and alpha-channel settings.
- Read the image at the size users will see it on a phone; small labels and overlays must remain legible.
- Look for notification icons, account names, email addresses, tokens, internal URLs, and other private data.
- Check that no caption exceeds the 20% visual guideline or makes a prohibited claim.
- Verify localized versions use the correct language and that alt text is unique and under 140 characters.
- Open the final files after export. A conversion step can introduce transparency, blur, or unexpected compression.
6. Upload in Google Play Console
- Open the app in Play Console.
- Go to Grow users → Store presence → Main store listing (the exact navigation label can vary as Google updates Console).
- Find the Graphics section.
- Open the subsection for the relevant device type and upload its screenshots in the intended order.
- Add alt text where the interface requests it, then save and resolve any validation errors.
- Preview the listing at different widths and languages before submitting the release.
Assets added to the Main store listing can be shown across test tracks and on Play surfaces beyond the app detail page. Keep the source files and a simple inventory of device type, locale, app version, dimensions, and upload date so the set can be refreshed when the UI changes.

7. Troubleshooting common failures
“Invalid dimensions” or aspect-ratio errors
Measure the exported file, not the emulator window. Resize or recapture so the shortest and longest sides meet the 320–3,840-pixel general limits and the two-to-one maximum ratio. For recommendation guidance, use the specified 16:9 or 9:16 sizes.
The image is rejected for transparency or format
Export a JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. Wear OS images also must not use masking or transparency. Reopen the converted file and inspect its color mode before uploading.
Text is clipped or unreadable
Test the full image at a small display size, reduce decorative copy, increase contrast, and keep overlays away from edges. Tablet and Chromebook overlays in particular can be cropped on Play homepages.
The screenshot does not match the published app
Capture from the release candidate, remove mock features and outdated branding, and repeat the review after any UI change. Google’s accuracy guidance applies to screenshots as well as listing text.
A device section still asks for assets
Check whether the app declares that form factor. TV, Automotive, Wear OS, and XR sections have independent counts and dimensions; satisfying the phone set does not satisfy them.

A remote capture shows a blank page or popup

8. A release-ready checklist
- Every supported device type has its own compliant set.
- The first three images make the core UI immediately understandable.
- All screens come from the current release candidate.
- Files are JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha and meet the applicable dimensions.
- Large-screen, Wear OS, TV, Automotive, and XR rules have been checked separately.
- Notifications, private data, prohibited claims, and stale promotions are absent.
- Localized overlays have localized assets and concise alt text.
- The order, cropping, and legibility look correct in Play Console previews.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use screenshots from an older app version?
Only if they still exactly represent the functionality and visual experience users will receive. Re-capture after meaningful UI or feature changes.
Do screenshots need to show a physical Android phone?
No. A physical phone is optional; an emulator or another capture workflow can produce the assets, provided the final images meet Google’s requirements and accurately show the app.
How many screenshots can I upload for one device type?
Google allows up to eight screenshots for each supported device type.
Are the recommendation dimensions mandatory for publication?
No. They are higher-resolution guidance for recommendation eligibility. The general baseline and each device-specific section still apply.
