The right JavaScript method depends on what you mean by “image of a website.” To capture an element or page that is already open in a browser, use html2canvas, which reconstructs DOM content into a canvas. To capture a URL through a real browser—especially on a server—use Puppeteer and page.screenshot(). For a hosted, no-browser-infrastructure option, use ScreenshotNeo.

html2canvas traverses the DOM and styles to build a canvas. It cannot reproduce CSS or browser behavior that the library does not implement. Puppeteer instead controls a browser and captures the rendered page, returning image bytes. See the html2canvas documentation and Puppeteer screenshot API.
Capture an HTML element with html2canvas
Install and import
Install the package with your project’s package manager, then import it in browser code. The package is browser-only and its main call returns a Promise, as described in the getting-started guide.

link.click();Place an element such as <section id="capture">...</section> in the document. The canvas can also be inserted into the page with document.body.appendChild(canvas) rather than downloaded. The PNG download pattern is documented in the project’s examples.

link.click();scale can improve sharpness on high-density displays, but it also increases pixel dimensions and memory use. For a long page, capturing a bounded element or several sections is safer than assuming an unlimited canvas.
Crop, hide and ignore content
The examples support region coordinates, explicit dimensions, scaling and an ignoreElements callback. For example, to omit a cookie control from the reconstructed image:

});Use a temporary CSS class to hide content before capture when you need deterministic layout, then remove it after the Promise resolves.

Capture a URL with Puppeteer

}page.screenshot() captures the browser-rendered page and can write a file or return image data. Use fullPage: true for the complete scrollable page, or omit it for only the current viewport. Puppeteer’s API is maintained on its official documentation.
Wait for content that loads after navigation

await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });Waiting for a selector is more reliable than adding an arbitrary delay when an application renders asynchronously. If a site needs authentication, set cookies or headers before navigation; do not place credentials in source code or logs.
Why html2canvas output can differ from the page
Unsupported CSS and browser behavior
html2canvas reads the document and builds its own representation. Unsupported CSS features, browser controls, video frames and some effects may be missing or visually different. Treat it as a DOM renderer, not a literal screenshot. If pixel fidelity matters, capture with a browser automation tool.

Cross-origin images
Remote images must permit cross-origin use through appropriate response headers. useCORS: true requests CORS-enabled loading; it cannot override the browser’s same-origin policy. If the image server does not grant access, the image may be skipped or the canvas may become tainted. A server-side proxy designed for that asset and its permissions may be required. The project explains these constraints in its FAQ.

Code running on the parent page cannot read a cross-origin iframe’s document. Same-origin frames are supported where browser policy allows access. Capture the framed page separately or arrange an approved same-origin integration.
Canvas size limits
Maximum canvas dimensions vary by browser, operating system and hardware. Very tall or wide captures can be blank, clipped or partially rendered. Capture smaller regions, reduce scale, or stitch multiple sections in a server-side workflow rather than relying on one enormous canvas.

Saving formats and controlling quality
canvas.toDataURL('image/png') creates a PNG data URL. For photographs or large pages, JPEG can be smaller:

- “Capture element not found”: run the code after the DOM exists, check the selector, and confirm the element is not inside a shadow root you cannot query directly.
- Images missing: inspect the image response’s CORS headers. Enable
useCORSonly when the server supports it; otherwise use permitted same-origin hosting or a proxy. - Iframe is blank: a cross-origin iframe is protected by browser security. Capture it from its own origin or use a browser-level workflow.
- Output is blank or clipped: reduce the capture area or scale. Check browser-specific canvas limits and memory pressure.
- Fonts or late content are absent: wait for
document.fonts.readyor a meaningful application selector before calling html2canvas or Puppeteer’s screenshot method. - Puppeteer cannot launch: verify the installed browser dependency, container sandbox settings and available memory. Keep the browser open for multiple captures when safe, but close pages and the browser in error paths.
- Output is not pixel-identical: switch from html2canvas to Puppeteer, which captures a rendered browser page rather than reconstructing DOM content.
Performance, reliability and security
- Capture only the region you need; full-page and high-scale images consume substantially more memory.
- Use selector-based readiness conditions for single-page applications instead of fixed sleeps.
- Reuse a Puppeteer browser process for batches, while isolating pages and closing them after each job.
- Set navigation and selector timeouts, record failures, and retry only transient navigation errors.
- Never expose API keys, session cookies or bearer tokens in client-side code intended for public users.
- Review permission and terms before capturing pages that require login or contain personal data.

Use html2canvas when a user is already viewing the page and you need a selected DOM region in browser code. Use Puppeteer when you control a Node.js process and need a browser-rendered URL capture. Can html2canvas capture a website URL directly?
No. It runs against DOM content available in the current browser page. Navigate the browser first, or use Puppeteer or a hosted URL screenshot API for server-side URL capture.
Can I run html2canvas in Node.js?
The library depends on browser APIs such as window and document, so it is not intended for Node.js server rendering. Use Puppeteer or a hosted service on the server.
How do I capture only one HTML element as a PNG?
Select it with document.querySelector, pass it to html2canvas, then export the returned canvas with toDataURL(‘image/png’) or toBlob().
Why does a screenshot include a cookie banner or chat widget?
