To create an e-learning website, first choose between a dedicated learning management system (LMS) such as Moodle and a WordPress site with the LearnDash LMS plugin. Then verify that the platform supports your course files and integrations, prepare its hosting and administration, build and test a representative course, and check accessibility across the actual learner experience. The right choice depends on your team’s technical capacity and what your learners and course materials need—not a universal platform ranking.

Choose the platform that fits your courses and team

Both Moodle and WordPress with LearnDash can deliver online courses, but they differ in how they fit into your existing setup. Before choosing, identify who will handle hosting, updates, and user administration; what course formats and integrations you need; how much customization you want; and how you will evaluate accessibility.

Approach What the documentation supports Check before committing
Moodle Moodle documents SCORM package delivery, LTI integrations, and multiple content import and export approaches. Its standards documentation also discusses AICC and other formats. Moodle standards documentation Confirm the documentation for your deployed Moodle version and test the precise package formats and integrations your courses require.
WordPress with LearnDash LearnDash describes a course builder with drag-and-drop tools, integrations, and support for different media. Its product page says SCORM and xAPI require a paid third-party add-on. LearnDash product information Check WordPress and LearnDash requirements, and verify the add-on’s current compatibility and capabilities if your courses use SCORM or xAPI.

The available documentation does not establish a current, like-for-like price or hosting comparison between these options. Compare the operational work and requirements for your specific setup rather than assuming one will be cheaper or easier.

Inventory content and integrations before building

Make a list of the materials you already have and what the finished site must connect to. Include the course package format and version, any required learning tools, and the reporting behavior you need. A platform’s general support for a standard does not by itself confirm that every package will behave as expected.

  • Identify the formats used by existing courses, including SCORM or xAPI where applicable.
  • List integrations learners or instructors will depend on, such as LTI tools.
  • Define what successful completion and reporting should look like for a representative course.

Before migrating a large course library, import a representative package and check its lessons, assessments, and reporting. Moodle documents SCORM and LTI capabilities; LearnDash says SCORM and xAPI depend on a paid third-party add-on. Confirm the exact version and behavior against the current documentation for the deployed platform and add-on. Moodle standards · LearnDash features and add-on note

Prepare hosting and install the learning platform

For a LearnDash setup, the official installation guide says to check the minimum server requirements before installing. It describes uploading and activating the plugin through the WordPress dashboard. Review the live requirements before selecting hosting or beginning installation; requirements can change. 1. Confirm the platform requirements. For LearnDash, compare the hosting environment with the current minimum server requirements in the installation guide.
  2. Set up WordPress. LearnDash is installed as a WordPress plugin, so prepare the WordPress site before following its installation instructions.
  3. Upload and activate LearnDash. Use the WordPress dashboard workflow described in the official guide, following its current steps.
  4. For Moodle, follow the documentation for your deployed version. Moodle’s configuration and enabled modules affect the features available on the resulting site; verify setup and course-format details in the documentation for that version.

Build a course and test the learner journey

Start with one representative course rather than moving every course at once. Add the materials, activities, and assessments learners will use, then test the experience from a learner account. If the course relies on a package or integration, test that specific workflow as well as ordinary page navigation.

  • Check that learners can find and open lessons and course materials.
  • Try assessments and any required completion or reporting flow.
  • Test relevant integrations and imported course packages using the versions you intend to deploy.
  • Review the site on the devices and with the assistive technologies your learners are likely to use.

Review accessibility on the configured site

Accessibility involves the platform, its configuration, and the content authors create. Moodle says it follows WCAG guidance and documents accessibility practices. Its LMS conformance report describes an audit and continuing review, while also noting that Moodle is complex and configurable and includes user-generated content. That means a platform statement cannot establish that every customized site or course is accessible. Moodle accessibility documentation · Moodle LMS VPAT

Plan for ongoing operation

Launching the site is not the end of the work. Decide who will manage updates, user administration, course changes, integration checks, and accessibility reviews.
