You do not need an HttpResponse to email a PDF from Django. Render the HTML to PDF bytes, then attach those bytes to a Django EmailMessage. An HTTP response is for returning content to a web client; an email attachment is content added to a message.
Generate the PDF and attach it in memory
Python-PDFKit can return the generated PDF content when you omit the output path. Django’s EmailMessage.attach(filename, content, mimetype) then adds that content as a mail attachment. This keeps the operation separate from any view response and avoids writing a temporary file.
import pdfkit
from django.core.mail import EmailMessage
html = "<h1>Invoice</h1><p>Example content</p>"
pdf_bytes = pdfkit.from_string(html, False)
email = EmailMessage(
subject="Your invoice",
body="Please find your invoice attached.",
from_email="[email protected]",
to=["[email protected]"],
)
email.attach("invoice.pdf", pdf_bytes, "application/pdf")
email.send()
The second argument False tells PDFKit not to write to a named output file; the return value is PDF content. Use that value directly as the attachment content. The filename should end in .pdf, and the MIME type for the attachment is application/pdf. This example shows the documented API combination; it has not been independently executed here. Check the behavior against the PDFKit version installed in your application.

Use it from a Django view or background task
The PDF-and-email work can run wherever your application has the HTML and needs to send the message. In a view, you can call a helper that renders and sends the email without returning the PDF to the browser. In a background task, pass the required invoice data to the task and build the message there. Neither case requires constructing an HttpResponse for the PDF.

Keep the responsibilities distinct: prepare or render the HTML, convert it to PDF bytes, then attach those bytes to a message. If an HTTP endpoint separately needs to let a user download the same document, that endpoint may return an HTTP response; that is a separate delivery path, not a prerequisite for email.
Why EmailMessage is the right Django API
Django’s send_mail() is a thin wrapper for straightforward messages. For advanced features such as file attachments, use an EmailMessage instance. Its attach() method takes a filename, content, and optional MIME type. Providing the MIME type explicitly makes the intended PDF format clear to mail clients.
- Filename:
invoice.pdfis the name recipients see for the attachment. - Content: the PDF bytes returned by PDFKit, not an HTTP response object.
- MIME type:
application/pdf.
Django can infer a MIME type from a filename when you omit it, but an explicit type is straightforward for this case. Do not confuse an email’s MIME attachment with the HTTP Content-Disposition behavior used to present a downloadable response; they are different mechanisms.

Attach a PDF file if you already write one to disk
If another part of the application already creates and stores the PDF as a file, use Django’s attach_file() instead of reading it into your own attachment call:
from django.core.mail import EmailMessage
email = EmailMessage(
subject="Your invoice",
body="Please find your invoice attached.",
from_email="[email protected]",
to=["[email protected]"],
)
email.attach_file("/path/to/invoice.pdf", "application/pdf")
email.send()
Django can infer a MIME type from the file’s name if you do not supply one. If the file is temporary, your application is responsible for its lifecycle and cleanup. Avoid creating a file solely to attach it when an in-memory result is suitable.

| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
PDF bytes plus attach() |
The PDF is generated for this message and does not need to persist as a file. | Keeps the flow in memory; large documents use memory while generated and attached. |
Existing file plus attach_file() |
The application already has a PDF path, or it needs to retain the file for another purpose. | Requires file access and an explicit cleanup or retention policy when the file is temporary. |
Install and configure the renderer
PDFKit is a Python wrapper around the separate wkhtmltopdf executable. Installing the Python package alone does not supply that binary. The executable must be installed and available to the application in its runtime environment, including in the deployment container or host—not just on a developer workstation.
PDFKit’s usage documentation describes configuring an explicit executable path when it is not discoverable through the environment. If needed, configure the path through PDFKit’s configuration mechanism for your installed release, then verify that the application process can execute that binary. Check the operating system, CPU architecture, required libraries, and binary behavior in the actual deployment environment. The wkhtmltopdf project lists 0.12.6 as its stable release, dated June 11, 2020; that age is an operational consideration, not evidence that every package build behaves identically.
Use the API that matches the Django version in the project. Django 5.2 documents attach() and attach_file() and added EmailAttachment support. Django 6.0 documents MIMEPart attachments and deprecates legacy MIMEBase attachments. The example above uses the direct EmailMessage attachment methods; do not copy a version-specific attachment pattern from a different Django release without checking compatibility.
Security: treat HTML and the renderer as a risk boundary
The wkhtmltopdf project warns against processing untrusted HTML or JavaScript without sanitizing user-supplied input, noting that this can lead to server takeover. Sanitizing content is important, but it is not proof that arbitrary input is safe. Do not pass raw user-controlled HTML or scripts to the renderer as though PDF generation were a harmless formatting step.
- Constrain which HTML and values can enter the document; escape or sanitize user-supplied data according to how it is inserted.
- Assess the renderer’s isolation, filesystem permissions, network access, and access to application secrets.
- Do not assume that a clean-looking PDF means the HTML was safe to process.
- Consider a different renderer when its maintenance and security posture better fits the application. The wkhtmltopdf project names WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled reports and Puppeteer for dynamic-JavaScript pages; those are use-case suggestions, not results of a head-to-head test.
PDFKit’s project page says the project is deprecated in line with wkhtmltopdf’s project status. That is a maintenance caveat to weigh before adopting this stack for new work, especially where long-term support, security updates, or complex modern web rendering matter.

Troubleshooting common failures
PDFKit cannot find wkhtmltopdf
Likely cause: the Python wrapper is installed but the executable is missing, is not on the application process’s path, or is installed at a different location in production. Fix: install a compatible binary in the runtime environment and configure its path if it is not discoverable. Test from the same container, service account, or host context that runs Django.
The generated attachment is empty or is not a PDF
Likely cause: the wrong return value or output mode was used, or rendering failed before usable PDF content was produced. Fix: for the in-memory PDFKit pattern, omit a destination path using the documented False argument and pass the returned content to attach(). Confirm the selected PDFKit version’s return behavior and check the renderer’s error output rather than emailing an invalid artifact.
The message arrives without a recognizable PDF attachment
Likely cause: the attachment was added with an unsuitable filename or MIME type, or the code attached something other than the generated PDF bytes. Fix: use a filename ending in .pdf, pass the PDF content as the attachment content, and specify application/pdf.
HTML renders differently in production
Likely cause: different operating systems, binary builds, available fonts, or runtime dependencies. The project documentation does not establish identical behavior across builds. Fix: test the deployed binary and its dependencies with representative documents in the target environment; do not assume a workstation result transfers unchanged.
User-controlled content creates a security concern
Likely cause: untrusted HTML or JavaScript is reaching the renderer, or the renderer can reach resources and files it should not. Fix: restrict and sanitize inputs, limit renderer privileges and access, and evaluate isolation and network controls. If those boundaries cannot be made appropriate for the workload, choose a renderer and architecture that better suit it.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
There are no independently published performance, adoption, or reliability figures established here for this rendering path. Treat rendering time and resource use as properties to measure for your own documents, binary, and deployment rather than as fixed guarantees. In-memory output avoids temporary-file management, but PDF bytes occupy memory; file-backed output adds disk use and cleanup obligations. For large or concurrent documents, evaluate both approaches under the conditions your application actually encounters.
Reliability depends on more than Python code: the wkhtmltopdf binary must be present and runnable, the deployed environment must have its dependencies, and HTML must render acceptably there. Since the PDFKit project and wkhtmltopdf project flag deprecation/status concerns, factor upgrade and migration costs into the choice. No renderer comparison or benchmark is implied by the alternative names above.
