A website subpage is a page placed beneath a parent page in your site hierarchy. To create one, add a page, assign its parent or place it inside the intended navigation dropdown, add the content, publish it, and then check the live menu and URL. Menu nesting and URL nesting are separate settings, so verify both rather than assuming one changes the other.
What “subpage” means
The word subpage is used for two related arrangements:
- Hierarchy: a child page belongs beneath a parent page, such as “Board of Directors” beneath “About.”
- Navigation: a dropdown or nested menu item lets visitors reach that child page from the parent item.
Some platforms connect these automatically; others treat them as independent choices. A page can therefore be a child in the page hierarchy without appearing in the main menu, or it can appear in a dropdown while using a URL that does not contain the parent segment.
Plan the page before opening your editor
Choose the parent and purpose
Decide which existing page is the logical parent and whether visitors should reach the new page through the primary menu, a footer, an in-page link, or several routes. Use a parent that describes the subject, not merely one that happens to be near it in the menu.

Separate the three checks
- Page exists: the editor has created and published it.
- Menu placement: the item is visible in the intended dropdown or navigation area.
- URL and access: the public address works, the slug is correct, and permissions and indexing settings match your goal.
Keeping these checks separate prevents a common mistake: seeing a nested menu and assuming the URL must also be nested.
WordPress: create a child Page
These steps apply to WordPress Pages, which are intended for non-chronological content. Labels can vary slightly with your theme and editor.
- In the dashboard, open Pages > Add New.
- Enter the page title and add the content.
- In the page sidebar, open Page Attributes.
- Set Parent Page to the page that should contain this subpage. If your theme uses page order for a menu, enter an appropriate Order value.
- Review the permalink or slug, then click Publish.
WordPress displays child pages nested beneath their parent in the Pages list. Depending on your permalink settings, the URL can reflect that hierarchy; an example is /about/board-of-directors/. The child relationship does not guarantee that every theme adds the page to navigation automatically.
Add the page to navigation when needed
Open your theme’s menu or Navigation editor after publishing. Add the new page, drag it beneath the parent item, and indent it until it becomes a submenu item. Save the navigation, then test the live menu on both desktop and mobile. A page may remain published and accessible by direct URL even when it is not in the menu.
Wix Editor: add a subpage to a dropdown
In the Wix Editor, page nesting and URL hierarchy are related but distinct controls.
- Open the site’s page-management controls.
- Find the page you want to move, open its More Actions menu, and choose Subpage.
- Select the parent page. Wix presents this as a dropdown relationship that visitors can open from the main menu.
- Add your title and page content, then publish.
- Open the live site and confirm that the item appears under the expected dropdown.
Wix also provides a site-hierarchy setting for parent-child URL paths. Check that setting and the published URL separately. Removing a parent can flatten child URLs, and redirect behavior can depend on whether the site uses a custom domain, so test links after reorganizing pages.

Keep a page out of the menu
Wix allows a page to remain on the site while being hidden from a menu. Use this for landing pages, campaign pages, or pages reached only from buttons and emails. Hiding a menu item does not make the page private; configure access controls if visitors must sign in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview Wix page settings
Page settings include access permissions, SEO basics, social-sharing information, and whether search engines may index the page. A layout without a header and footer can also remove the site menu, so provide another route back to the homepage or parent page when appropriate.
Wix Studio: change the slug and SEO controls
Wix Studio uses separate controls for the URL slug, title tag, meta description, and indexing. Open the page-management area, select the page, and edit its SEO settings rather than assuming the navigation hierarchy controls the URL.
Wix Studio documentation says changing a page slug creates a 301 redirect, subject to conflicts with manually configured redirects. Treat this as a Studio Editor instruction, not a promise that every Wix product has identical labels or behavior. After a change, test both the new URL and important old links.
Squarespace 7.1 desktop: place a page under a dropdown
The following procedure is for Squarespace 7.1 on desktop. Squarespace notes that steps differ between versions and between desktop and the app; if your interface differs, use the equivalent Pages or navigation control in your version.
- Open Pages.
- To create a top-level page, click the + beside Main Navigation. To create a subpage, click + Add page under the dropdown where it should appear.
- Choose a blank page or a page/layout type.
- Enter the page title and build the content.
- Save or publish according to your site’s current workflow.
- Visit the live site and open the dropdown to confirm the page is reachable.
A dropdown position is a navigation choice. Check the resulting address independently if your information architecture requires a particular URL pattern.

Publish and verify the live result
- Open the public URL in a private window. This catches accidental editor-only access and login requirements.
- Check the full address. Confirm spelling, capitalization behavior, trailing-slash handling, and whether the parent path is present when you intended it to be.
- Test the menu. Open the parent dropdown on desktop and mobile, then select the subpage.
- Check direct links. Test buttons, breadcrumbs, footer links, and any old URL if the page was moved.
- Review access. Confirm the page is public, members-only, password-protected, or otherwise restricted as intended.
- Review indexing. If search visibility matters, make sure the page is not accidentally set to “no index.” If it is private or a duplicate, blocking indexing may be deliberate.
- Check the layout. A page without a shared header or footer may lack the normal site navigation.
Common problems and fixes
The page is published but missing from the menu
Publishing creates the page; it does not always update navigation. Add the page manually in the menu editor, drag it beneath the parent, indent it, and save. Also check that the menu is the one assigned to the header shown on the live page.
The dropdown works, but the URL is flat
Menu nesting does not universally create a parent URL segment. Inspect the platform’s hierarchy or permalink setting and edit the slug only if the resulting address is worth the change. Add or verify redirects when an established URL changes.
The URL changed after moving the page
Changing a parent can alter a child path. Open the new URL, test important old links, and confirm the platform’s redirect behavior. On Wix, parent removal can flatten child URLs and custom-domain configuration can affect redirects.

Check that the page is published rather than saved as a draft, copy the exact live URL, and look for conflicting slugs. Republish or clear platform caches if the editor reports success but the public address still fails.
The page is inaccessible to some visitors
Review page access settings, member roles, passwords, and any site-wide permissions. A hidden menu item is not the same as a private page.
The page cannot be found in search
Check the indexing setting, canonical or duplicate-page configuration, and whether the page is publicly accessible. A subpage structure alone is not evidence of a ranking improvement; use hierarchy for clarity and navigation, not as a guaranteed SEO tactic.
Rank #4
The menu disappears on the new page
Check whether the page uses a layout without a header and footer. Add a navigation link to the homepage or parent, or switch to a layout that includes the site menu.

If you need a rendered image of the published subpage for documentation, QA, or a content workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Choosing a structure that will remain understandable
- Use one parent for a coherent topic group instead of creating deep, confusing nesting.
- Keep page titles and slugs descriptive and stable.
- Use breadcrumbs or contextual links when a dropdown alone is not enough.
- Document intentional exceptions, such as a campaign page hidden from navigation.
- After every move or parent change, test the live menu, direct URL, redirects, permissions, and indexing status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a subpage have more than one parent?
Most site builders use a single parent in the page hierarchy. If visitors need multiple routes, keep one canonical page and link to it from other menus or pages.
Should every subpage be indexed by search engines?
No. Index public pages that provide unique value; keep private, duplicate, or temporary pages restricted or excluded according to your platform’s controls.
Can I create a subpage without showing it in navigation?
Yes. Publish the page and omit it from the menu, then link to it from a button, article, email, or other controlled route.
