For one or a few videos, add a YouTube Embed block—or another supported Embed block—to a WordPress page and paste in the video URL. For a browsable gallery with thumbnails, multiple videos, albums, filters, or lightbox playback, use a dedicated video-gallery block or plugin. Embedding usually links to the video hosted by a provider rather than uploading the video file to WordPress; check that the video permits embedding and preview the page on mobile before publishing.
Choose between an embed and a video gallery
A standard WordPress embed is the simplest choice when you want to place one video, or a short sequence of videos, in a page. WordPress supports embeds from providers such as YouTube, so you can link to an external video without uploading its file to your site. See WordPress’s Embeds documentation.

The core Gallery block is documented as an image-gallery block, not a full video-gallery builder. If visitors need to browse video thumbnails, filter or select albums, or open videos in a lightbox, choose a dedicated video-gallery block or plugin instead. WordPress also has a Video block for uploading a file, selecting one from the Media Library, or inserting a supported URL; that is useful for an individual video, but is not the same as a browsable multi-video gallery. See the Video block guide and Block Editor Handbook’s media blocks reference.

Embed a YouTube video in a WordPress page
- Copy the video URL from YouTube.
- In the WordPress editor, open the page or post where the video should appear and add a YouTube Embed block.
- Paste the URL into the block and select Embed.
- Preview the page on the front end, including at a narrow or mobile viewport, then publish or update it when the layout looks right.
These steps follow WordPress’s YouTube embed guide. It also documents support for YouTube Live URLs and playlist URLs; a playlist URL can show the first video with playlist navigation. Wide and full-width alignment options depend on the active theme.

If the video will not embed
First check that the video owner allows embedding. WordPress notes that some publishers also restrict the countries where a video can be shared. If the video is restricted, changing the block or gallery layout will not remove the publisher’s restriction. The embed also shares non-personal identifying viewing data with YouTube and the video publisher, as WordPress explains in its YouTube embed documentation.
Create a multi-video gallery with a Gutenberg block
A dedicated gallery block adds the browsing features that a single embed lacks. The WordPress Plugin Directory listing for Video Gallery Block describes a Gutenberg workflow for adding YouTube or Vimeo URLs, then arranging the gallery with options such as albums, columns, and layout.
- Edit the page or post in the Gutenberg editor.
- Insert the Video Gallery Block.
- Add the YouTube or Vimeo URLs for the videos you want to include.
- Configure the gallery’s columns and layout; set up albums or filters if you want visitors to browse by category.
- Preview the result, including on a mobile-width screen, and publish the page.
The listing describes the free version as supporting responsive galleries, albums, filters, thumbnails, captions, and lightbox popups. Its September 7, 2026 release notes list bulk URL import and a thumbnail-shape option for version 1.5.0. Plugin features can change, so check the current listing for the features and version available when you install it.

Compare other WordPress video-gallery plugins
Choose a plugin based on the providers and gallery behavior you actually need, not just the word “video” in its description. The published plugin pages and documentation describe different provider and plan support:
| Option | Documented sources and features | Plan or setup detail |
|---|---|---|
| Video Gallery Block | YouTube and Vimeo galleries; listing describes albums, filters, thumbnails, captions, and lightbox popups. | Listing describes these gallery features in the free version; Pro adds other layouts and sources. Verify current details in the listing. |
| FooGallery | Video-gallery sources include YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Vimeo, and self-hosted videos. | WordPress.org listing places video-gallery support in PRO Expert and PRO Commerce. |
| Envira Gallery Videos Addon | Documentation lists self-hosted MP4, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, VideoPress, and DailyMotion. It explains adding video links, configuring video options, and publishing a gallery. | YouTube playlist galleries require an API key. |
Before installing, compare whether the free version covers your needs, whether the plugin fits Gutenberg or your page builder, which providers it accepts, and whether it offers self-hosted video, albums or filters, playlist handling, and lightbox or in-gallery playback. Check the publisher’s current plan details for pricing; plan terms can change.
Embedding versus uploading a video
A gallery plugin does not automatically mean you need a separate paid video host. WordPress embeds supported provider URLs without requiring you to upload the video file to your WordPress site. Some gallery options also accept self-hosted videos, while others focus on provider links. Choose based on whether you need the provider’s hosting or need to manage video files yourself; the cited documentation does not establish a general cost or performance comparison between those approaches.
Quick Recap
Check the gallery before publishing
- Open each video URL directly and confirm that its owner allows embedding.
- Preview the published page rather than relying only on the editor, and check a narrow/mobile layout.
- Confirm that the gallery’s provider support and any playlist, album, filter, or lightbox behavior match what you expect.
- If using a playlist with Envira, prepare the required YouTube API key.
