To let visitors submit events, install The Events Calendar and add Community Events. The base plugin creates the calendar; Community Events adds a public submission form and lets you choose immediate publication or moderation before events appear.
What you need
- A working WordPress site with administrator access.
- The The Events Calendar plugin, installed from Plugins → Add New or uploaded manually as a ZIP.
- The Community Events add-on installed alongside the base plugin when visitors must submit events from the public site.
The free The Events Calendar plugin by itself does not provide frontend event submission, according to a vendor reply on WordPress.org. Community Events is therefore an additional requirement, not an optional setting inside the base plugin.
Install the calendar and submission add-on

Install The Events Calendar
In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New, search for Events Calendar, then install and activate The Events Calendar. The plugin listing also documents manual ZIP upload if you received the plugin package another way.

Add Community Events
Install and activate Community Events alongside The Events Calendar. Its listing says the add-on adds a page containing a form that visitors can use to submit events.

Confirm the public calendar
Open the calendar on the front end in a logged-out browser window. Check that visitors can see the calendar and that the submission page created by Community Events is reachable without entering the WordPress dashboard.
Choose how submissions are published
The calendar owner can either publish incoming events immediately or hold them for moderation first. For a public community calendar, moderation is usually the safer launch setting: it gives someone a chance to remove spam, correct obvious errors and check that dates, venues and contact details are plausible.

Immediate publication
Use this only when contributors are trusted and the site has another reliable way to detect abuse. A submission that is published immediately can become visible before anyone checks it.
Moderation first
Assign a person or team to review the incoming queue on a defined schedule. Decide what qualifies for approval, what information must be corrected, and when a submission should be rejected. The official listing describes moderation as an owner-controlled choice; the exact controls and labels can vary by the current release.

Make the submission route understandable
Add a prominent link such as Submit an event from the events page, site navigation or a community-information page. Explain what contributors should prepare before opening the form:
- Event name and a plain-language description.
- Start and end date, including the time zone when relevant.
- Venue or online location and any access instructions.
- Organizer name and a reliable contact method.
- Registration or ticket links, if attendees must sign up elsewhere.
- An appropriate category and image, if those fields are offered by the current form.
The listing confirms that Community Events supplies the form, but it does not establish the exact current field configuration or the menu path used to place the form link. Check the form on your own site rather than promising contributors fields that may not be enabled.

Test the complete workflow before opening submissions
- Submit a test event from a logged-out browser, using realistic dates, location details and an image if available.
- Verify what confirmation the contributor sees after submission.
- In the WordPress dashboard, check whether the event enters the expected review or publication state.
- Approve or publish the test event and confirm that it appears correctly in the calendar, category views and single-event page.
- Check dates, time zones, links, images, mobile layout and email notifications.
- Repeat the test with incomplete or suspicious data to confirm how the site handles rejection or correction.
The Events Calendar listing cautions that compatibility with every theme and plugin is not guaranteed. If the flow fails, update the plugins, then investigate conflicts by temporarily disabling other plugins and testing with a default theme. Perform this diagnosis on staging or another controlled copy before changing a live community calendar.

Historical Community Events changelog entries mention CAPTCHA, administrator email notifications, a moderation queue and the ability for users to edit events they submitted. Those entries are not a guarantee that every control is present or configured the same way now; the listing’s metadata says the plugin was last updated seven months ago. Verify each control in the installed release before advertising it to contributors.

Keep ticketing and RSVPs separate from event submissions
Accepting event listings does not require selling tickets or collecting RSVPs. If the site later needs those functions, evaluate Event Tickets or Community Tickets separately. The official listing describes Community Tickets as working with The Events Calendar, Community Events and Event Tickets, but those extensions are additional decisions rather than prerequisites for receiving event information.
