To give a developer, support agent, or guest editor short-term WordPress access without sharing a permanent password, use a temporary-login plugin: create the access link or temporary account, assign the minimum role needed, set a short expiry, and share the URL securely. Treat an active login URL like a credential, then revoke access when the task is done.
Choose the kind of access you need
WordPress plugins handle temporary passwordless access in different ways. Some create self-expiring login links; others create temporary accounts with token-protected links. If the recipient already has a WordPress account, a passwordless-link plugin may fit better than creating a guest account.
| Plugin | What its listing describes | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary Login Without Password | Choose a role and expiry, set a custom date, redirect, or language, and view last-login and access-count information. Its Pro features include link-use limits, alerts, and detailed activity logs. [Plugin listing] [Pro feature details] | Whether its role and expiry controls meet the task, and whether monitoring features you need are included in the edition you plan to use. |
| Bifröst | Generated links, a seven-day default validity, deletion, and a stated restriction on the User menu for temporary users. [Plugin listing] | Whether the default duration and the publisher-described user-menu restriction suit the work. |
| TempAccessly | Temporary accounts and token-protected links, role and duration settings, revocation, session termination, and audit events. Its listing warns that anyone with an active URL can use the linked temporary account. [Plugin listing] | Account lifecycle, what revocation does to sessions, and whether its audit features meet your needs. |
| Login Links | Temporary links and passwordless access for registered users, with expiration by time, login count, or whichever limit comes first. [Plugin listing] | Whether the recipient needs passwordless access to an existing account rather than a temporary guest account. |
These are capabilities described by plugin publishers, not independently verified security findings. Review the current listing and test the plugin on the target site before granting access.
Create and share the temporary access
- Install a plugin that matches the access type. Use the plugin’s WordPress.org listing to review its current requirements and described controls.
- Open its administration screen and create the access link or account. Confirm the recipient gets only the access requested and that the selected role is not broader than necessary.
- Set the expiry. Choose the shortest duration that gives the person enough time to complete the work. There is no single duration that suits every task or plugin. For example, Bifröst’s listing describes a seven-day default; that is a product setting, not a general recommendation.
- Send the URL only to its intended recipient. A working login link can grant access to whoever possesses it, so handle it like a credential and use a suitable private channel.
- Revoke access when the work is finished. Check the plugin’s behavior: expiry and manual revocation are separate controls, and plugins may differ in whether revocation invalidates the link or ends active sessions.
Check expiry, revocation, sessions, and activity
Before relying on a temporary login, find out what the plugin does when its link expires and when you revoke access early. In particular, check whether an already logged-in browser session remains active and whether the old URL stops working. TempAccessly says its revocation feature invalidates the token and terminates sessions; do not assume other plugins behave the same way.

If you need to review access afterward, check what records the plugin exposes. TempAccessly describes audit events for the temporary-account lifecycle. Verify that the available records answer your monitoring needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the access narrow and short-lived
- Grant the least-privileged role that lets the recipient complete the task.
- Use a short expiry rather than leaving access open indefinitely.
- Share the link only with the person who needs it; an active link is a bearer credential.
- Revoke access as soon as the work is complete, and check the plugin’s session behavior rather than assuming the account’s removal ends every session.
- Review access records when your plugin provides them.
The exact controls, compatibility, and availability can change by plugin version. Confirm them in the current plugin listing and on the WordPress site where you plan to use the login.
