The simplest staff list in WordPress is a regular page built with the block editor. Create a page, add each person’s name and approved details with headings, paragraphs, lists, and optional images, then preview and publish it. You do not need a staff-directory plugin unless you want structured fields, drag-and-drop ordering, individual profiles, categories, or search.

Choose the right approach

Approach Best for What you manage
Standard WordPress blocks A small team that changes infrequently All text, images, links, and ordering directly on one page
Simple Staff List plugin Consistent staff fields and easier reordering Name, photo, position, email, phone, bio, and drag-and-drop order
Block Directory result A block-based team layout, if a suitable block is available The block’s own settings and plugin updates
Full directory plugin Individual listings, custom fields, categories, or search Directory fields, listing pages, profiles, and search configuration

Create a staff list with WordPress blocks

  1. Open a new page. In the dashboard, go to Pages and create a new page. WordPress uses the block editor for pages and posts.
  2. Name the page. Use a clear title such as Our Staff, Meet the Team, or Contact Our Staff.
  3. Add an entry for each person. Use a Heading block for the name, followed by paragraphs or a list for the role and approved contact method. Add an Image block only when a photograph is useful and authorized.
  4. Insert blocks efficiently. Select the inserter button, use the plus button inside the content area, or type / followed by a block name. The block editor documentation describes blocks as the building units for media-rich pages and posts.
  5. Keep the format consistent. For example, use the same sequence for every entry: name, position, short description, and one approved contact method. Consistent headings make the page easier to scan and navigate.
  6. Set the order. Arrange people alphabetically, by department, by responsibility, or in the order visitors most often need. Choose one rule and apply it throughout the page.
  7. Preview and publish. Use WordPress’s preview control to inspect desktop and mobile layouts. Check that names, links, spacing, and images are readable before selecting Publish.

A simple entry pattern

Repeat a structure such as this for every person:

  • Heading: Jordan Lee
  • Paragraph: Operations Manager
  • Paragraph: Coordinates scheduling and facilities.
  • Link: An approved work email or department contact page

This manual method keeps the page lightweight and gives you complete control over wording and layout. Each change is made by editing the page itself, so review the page whenever someone joins, leaves, changes role, or changes contact details.

Use Simple Staff List for structured entries

Simple Staff List is an optional plugin listed separately in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory; it is not a built-in WordPress feature. Its documented fields include name, photo, position, email, phone number, and bio. A drag-and-drop interface controls the display order.

  1. Install and activate Simple Staff List from the WordPress plugin workflow.
  2. Open the plugin’s staff-management screen and add each person’s approved details.
  3. Use the drag-and-drop controls to set the order.
  4. Create or edit the page where the list should appear.
  5. Insert the shortcode [simple-staff-list] in the page or post.
  6. Preview the result on desktop and mobile, then publish or update the page.

The plugin listing also documents a template and custom CSS options for changing the presentation. Names of settings and compatibility can change, so check the current plugin page and your installed WordPress version before following version-specific instructions.

Try a team block from the Block Directory

In the block inserter, search for terms such as team or staff. If a suitable result is available, selecting it can install and activate the single-block plugin that provides it. Availability depends on what the Block Directory currently offers, so treat this as an option to test rather than a guaranteed result.

After inserting the block, inspect its fields, responsive behavior, accessibility settings, and update policy. If it does not provide the exact details or ordering you need, return to ordinary blocks or use a dedicated staff plugin.

When a full directory plugin is justified

A simple list becomes a different project when visitors need searchable records, categories, custom fields, or a separate profile for every person. A directory workflow generally involves configuring fields, creating a directory page, adding listings, and publishing those listings.

Business Directory Plugin-style setup

  1. Configure the fields your listings require.
  2. Create a directory page containing [businessdirectory].
  3. Add one listing per staff member.
  4. Choose optional photos, categories, and a search form if the directory needs them.
  5. Publish the listings and test searches, links, and profile pages.

This structured route adds administration and is unnecessary when a single, hand-maintained page answers the visitor’s question.

Contact List

Contact List is another WordPress.org-listed option. Its documentation describes adding contacts and displaying them with [contact_list] or the simpler [contact_list_simple] shortcode. It supports configurable contact fields and directory features; review its current documentation before deciding whether those features match your needs.

What information should you publish?

  • Name and role: The minimum useful identification.
  • Short bio: Add context when visitors need to know who handles a request.
  • Work email or phone: Publish only approved business contact details.
  • Photo: Use a current image only with the person’s authorization.
  • Department or category: Helpful when the team serves distinct functions.

Do not publish personal contact information or photographs without authorization from the site owner and the staff member. Remove or update entries promptly when responsibilities change.

Keep the list usable and maintainable

  • Use real heading levels so keyboard and assistive-technology users can navigate names.
  • Keep role labels and punctuation consistent.
  • Make email and phone links visibly identifiable and test them after editing.
  • Check the layout at a narrow mobile width; long names and job titles should not collide with images.
  • Decide on an ordering rule and document it for anyone who will maintain the page.
  • Review the page after WordPress, theme, or plugin updates.

Which method should you use?

Start with ordinary blocks when the list is short and updates are occasional. Choose Simple Staff List when repeated fields and drag-and-drop ordering will save maintenance time. Try a Block Directory result when you want a ready-made team block and can accept its available controls. Move to a fuller directory plugin only when profiles, custom fields, categories, or search are genuine requirements.
